    Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! Point operation question

I'm working on the point operating mechanisms for the layout just now. In the connections from the Tortoise motors to the TOU's, I'm intending to fit omega loops or Z sections to allow for any over-travel of the motor output bar (I'm using the Exactoscale conversion units). Any suggestions about suitable wire gauge and approximate dimensions to be sufficiently flexible not to wreck the TOU/switch blade actuators but still hold the switch blades hard against the stock rails?   Cheers,   Dave.

Some thoughts on Bridges

Treneglos in Hornby Mag Year Book

Last week we had the proofs through from Mike Wild at Hornby Mag for the Treneglos article that will be appearing in their 2nd Year Book. Superelevation strips

You can see the 'run out' of the Tillig superelevation strip. It starts at a point halfway along the transition curve and works very well in high speed 'push along' mode! If you are going to try this, when gluing the track to the strip with PVA glue (plenty needed), a lot of weight will be needed during the drying time, as the inner edge has a tendancy to lift if you don't!   Meanwhile a few more snaps of progress. More edging fitted and painting.

Update - a little progress last night with board 3 as I have now laid the cork sheet below the trackbed. Unfortunately I cannot lay the track as am awaiting delivery of a new soldering iron and solder from the UK - giving myself the benefit of the doubt, I am guessing my soldering started to deteriorate from poor to absolutely shocking, possibly due to the only solder that I can find here was probably meant for joining water pipes together <img src='http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/public/sty

An introduction

Bradwell Brake

One of the most enjoyable bits of stock construction over the last year was this Dave Bradwell Brakevan chassis kit. Paired with the body of an airfix/Dapol kit I was very pleased with the result. The chassis kit is ??16 and was very well designed and etched. The etch looked fiendish at first glance but I found the step-by-step instructions very good. Empire Goods Warehouse

I've started another substantial building on the layout, this time it is the railway owned goods warehouse. The idea is that this is a building with the track at viaduct level and a road entrance at ground level. The upper floors being used for storage. Construction is based around the use of Scalescenes brick paper and arches together with Brassmaster's etched windows.     Please let me know what you think. Class 03 Update

With a new computer to get to know, modelling's taken a bit of a back seat. Until now that is.   I've been flush glazing the 03, adding a new horn (!) transfers etc and getting things pretty much ready for the final weathering. Just the AJ's to fit and lamp lenses to add from epoxy or PVA. 73118 progression and a look back

73118 has progressed well its hard to beleive that the year will be over now in just over half a month! Farish class 47

Having read on another forum of an increasing number of the new class 47s failing and having to be returned I quickly got out my three recent purchases for a full running-in session and more thorough check up. Previously I had really only unpacked them for a quick look and photo call and a once around a test track circuit. Whohoo! apart from shed and numberplates it's about done. Still need to add coal, take a little off the tender weight to get the body to sit right down and the power wires betwixt loco and tender need re-soldering but basically it's ready for weathering     The loco will have an extensive photoshoot before hand-over to it's owner, I'll post some here

I'm afraid it is. A very nice one at that, NRM's City of Truro to be precise and no I'm not going to weather it!!! First impressions are that she certainly has as presence about her and looks stunning in her GWR livery. More progress on the industrial 3F and a Thomas Hill Vanguard

I've pretty much finished the main work on the 3F now. In the photos taken of it in industrial use, you can still see the BR smokebox number and the overhead line warning flashes, so these have been added using Fox transfers. This was my first time using the Fox transfers, and I must say how impressed I am - you can barely make out any carrier film and the detail is excellent. The only downside was having to buy a whole sheet of 100 or so smokebox numbers of which I wanted just one! I have a

No progress, but more thinking...

Everything is still going very slowly with the layout, again mostly down to the fact that I wont pay over the top postage just to buy a single jar of flux..... End result - I cant do any track laying.....   I have made a start on building the bufferstop for the branch platform, using an old mainly trains brass kit.
