    Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! Snow Plough action in the garden

Like many of us, we had along with VERY COLD weather a downfall of snow... This of course gave the perfect excuse to run a train in the garden !!! Having built a leaf/snow plough in preperation for just such an occasion I put on my wooly hat and ventured out. Much to tha amusement of my 16 year old daughter.   Christmas is here !!!!!

GWT Barrier coaches 6336 and 6338

Finally got round to making a start on gluing the etches onto my models of the Great Western Trains HST barrier coaches 6336 and 6338 (actually my 2nd model of 6338 as I already have finished one in First Great Western condition.)   Thankfully the GWT version is a little easier than the FGW one as it retains the corridor connections (so at least I dont have to scratch build any more blanking plates for those!)   The first step was removing all the Inter-city logos along with the NEA Tops co

Over the past couple of days while making progress on the design work for my 2010 entry, thoughts have come back a couple of times as to what I will do with Blackcombe Torr.   This was the original track plan. The change focuses around the complete removal of the mainline, along with all of the TPWS gear. The brick bridge on the left hand side would be replaced with a smaller 2 part stone structure (probably half girder half arch). The branchline will be removed either leaving a loco length

First Running Day since May!

Hello,   School has got ontop of Moor's Line, but today school has ended for Christmas! I decided to set it up to have some fun! Aswell we have finally started to hunt down the stuff needed to create a baseboard. Hopefully it shall be a L shaped one, witch is also going to be like a table. That is only if I am allowed! A Bigger Mineral - 2

Hopefully, this photo should show the arrangement of the representation of the brake gubbins slightly more clearly. A bit untidy perhaps, and I'd like to say that the next one will be better. A Bigger Mineral [A Chivers MDV]

Loathe as I am to use a TOPS designation for a wagon, this is one of the relatively few occasions where the wagon type is fairly obvious! While the basic kit is pretty good, accurate and well engineered, also including many of the things plastic wagons sometimes lack, there are a few things which can be improved or extra detail to be added. The usual things like grab handles on the end door are easy enough though the sides and ensds are a bit thick, thinning them down a bit is straightforward.

My P-way box van has now been painted and numbered, I'm just waiting for the couplings to arrive so it can be properly finished! It's pictured in the headshunt of Scrayingham with a couple of the other P-way waggons, the rest of the train so far is a pair of bolster waggons which will have a load of spare rails (once I get some sorted out!)     J

More work on the warehouse

Last night and tonight I made up some Brassmasters etched windows for the warehouse. I think these make quite a difference. Next step is probably going to be working out how to do the roof. One the one hand I fancy doing something with a pitched (maybe hipped) roof, but on the other I'm concerned how that might look given that the backscene means there would be no straight lines.   I think this calls for some cereal packet mock-ups!   David

Warehouse progress...

It feels good to have made some solid progress in the last fortnight, Paxton Road is at last coming into the final phase...   The MOD warehouse on the back of the layout needed to be completed before I could finish the ballasting or scenery on the front of the layout. Laser Cut Model of Barrow Road Shed

I took my Sheep Pasture layout to the Wigan Show at the weekend - what an excellent show and a big thank you to the organisers.   York Model Makers attended the show and brought with them elements of a kit of laser cut parts for the roundhouse at Barrow Road Shed which they are making for me. Coach repaints underway

I made further progress on the BG on Sunday but the weather has been terrible so Photos have had to wait until today. I have assembled the underframe trussing and the solebars and made a start detailing the underframe castings - adding cable to the dynamo etc. The battery box looks to be quite a crude casting with no back as is usual with cast battery boxes. I am still trying to decide whether to make a new one out of brass or just make a back for the cast one. No further progress with the 4mm o

A little more work on drawings. a first draft of the bridge at the station end, working from a couple of photos of the prototype at Botley and dimensions from Google Earth.       The second drawing from todays work is the signal box, again based upon the prototype at Botley. Makes an interesting prototype with the boarded up windows, door falling off, along with the various wires & lights on the end. The boarded up windows are also rather handy avoiding having to model the windows!

Having passed my annual checkride and with six months to relax before my next one I decided to do some weathering. 67027 was the victim, as the pictures hopefully show I added the buffer detail and added the front valance. I seperated the valance from the bogies and reattached it, now when the bogies turn the valance doesnt go with it. Found a picture of 67027 online and went to work with my powders. Looking forward to painting the big building I was rather fed up this morning on discovering it was going to be cold, wet or both for at least the next week, so with the indoor spraying ban imposed by SWMBO any fun with the Halfords primer will have to wait !   Snatched an hour this afternoon between jobs and managed to get a couple more things started, funnily enough, both involving humps !   Laid grass to one of the sections between the cripple road & shed road and it didnt look right

As mentioned in the last entry a few more cars are being worked on, so thought I'd stick a couple of pics up, may be of interest to someone!     Tower car 1, built from much modified E1 kit, bec reversed stairs, peckham cantilever truck, dashes from tinplate and plasticard laminate. Shown in first undercoat so needs rubbing down etc. Tower could be fun as I'm finding a good picture hard to come by. I've completed the basic core structure of Southwark Towers. The model is currently 23 inches tall and with the roof structures and protruding end towers/shafts it will be over two feet tall, but still a little short of scale height.         There still lots to do; towers/shafts as each wing end, roof sections and the solar(?) paneling but the basic shape is there. And that's why there's little point in making it with separate floors and see through with pespex wall and/or windows - once

Whitemetal LNER Open

The latest 'work-in-progress', well, more completion of outstanding works really is this LNER open. A fairly standard LNER vehicle, derived, I think from a GNR design with a wooden underframe and AVB. In this case - since dad built one years ago - I adapted it with steel channel ends following a David Larkin photo. I'm not sure whether I'll follow the photo and finish it in engineer's olive green or as a traffic vehicle in bauxite. All irrelevant until it gets a bit warmer in any case...

Converting Bachmann 16T minerals to EM

Just a quick update - have spent the past few modelling sessions converting a rake of Bachmann 16T mineral wagons to EM. The work required was surprisingly minor. Firstly, the wagon was disassembled to its constituent parts:     This included removing the brake gear, which was to be repositioned to line up with the wider EM wheelsets. The first job was to remove the stiffening ribs moulded on the inside faces of the W irons. This can be easily done by carving them away with a sharp scal

Naming a video on YouTube

I bet for those that post model railway videos on YouTube, you dont give much thought to its name ?? I didnt used to untill now ... Having been going through loads of old pictures and films in order to get this blog worth reading, or at least up to date as a starting point, I discovered something amazing.   A video i posted on YouTube about 2 years ago has now collected getting on for 45,000 views !!!!!
