Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Goings-on at Hawick

Don't anyone get too excited, this is 'Chard in web-based research mode (stop sniggering at the back, Viz readers).   Found this, which I've never seen before, quite: http://www.trainnet.org/libraries/Thumbnaills/European/Page12.html In the middle, look for a yellow end and the word HAWICK.   Don't ask me why it's there rubbing shoulders with all that German steam and V200s, but it is. And it's real Pennine MC territory too. Not literally of course, because Hull finescale modellers aren

Now with added backscene

Hello   I am very very happy. With thanks to Ron North of the High Wycombe Model Railway Club who has done fantastic work on the backscene for Highclere. Its something that I would never be able to come close to and although I no doubt will get some stick for not attempting it myself, I just wanted the best for Highclere and Ron has definately done that for me.         Thank you again Ron.   (A very happy) Missy

Sketches of "The depot"

Here's a first attempt to visualize "The depot", drawn with the Sketchup programme. As mentioned earlier, it will be constructed within an Ikea "Snackbox". The scenic part will be raised to allow ample room for electrics etc in the space underneath. I've used the same principle as on "The bay", where the viewing side is opposite of what you'd normally do. The idea is to increase the sense of being "inside" the scene, rather than viewing it from a distance.       So we're

The Warehouse is busy!

I have now added the lighting to the inside and outside of the warehouse and added a few store operatives           I hope nobody has been up to no good, the police are on the case so not to worry.......I think!       I think the Guards Walkie Talkies are broken......shouting across the tracks just doesn't look good!   Cheers   Ian

Signs, corrigations and primer

The pillars have now been beefed up with 5 ball point pens The tops were used as pressure valves on the storage tanks at the back. The canopy also has some corregations on the top and an all over coat of grey primer. Its only gently pushed into place at the moment so the gaps under the pillars will go on the final fit.           But the big news is the signage on the rendered wall of the factory.

Turnout Control

Before I disappear onto a long skint of night shifts, I thought it a good idea to make some progress while my brain is still operating normally   I have decided to use the standard Tortoise point motor with the Exactoscale adaptor base, then some how find a way of fixing it to the Easitrac points.     So, here is the end result. Nothing spectacular, but simple to reproduce and easy to maintain.     These small tube pass up through the baseboard and the tops sit just below the turno

47768, 47009, 67006 and 37667

Picked up a bunch of Shawplan bits on Thursday night, and have spent the weekend fitting them.   First up the 47s: both 47709 and 768 are both getting fitted with the new Shawplan roof grills this afternoon, I have also found some Heljan parts to start modifying 709's underframe to have long range fuel tanks. Finding that having tried a couple now I am really getting the hang of fitting the new grills. Certainly the method of applying glue to one half of the etch, fitting in position before a

Layout extension (to make the small layout larger)

In November I had the mad idea that I wanted to extend my layout from its current length of 2m to a layout that extended entirely round the room - (non scenic) Purely as somewhere where I could run trains up to their full scale speed and have break from the shunting which had been the practice from 2004.   I had a room that measured 11ft by 7ft with alcove for the door. Items that could prove to me a bit of an issue included a tall bookshelf, computer desk, workbench, tool drawers and a few ot

JLTRT Class 40 - D232 Empress of Canada

Hi all,   started this beast last week and thought you might be interested in the pick-up method that I have adopted. I decided to take advantage of the fact that with the bogie chassis block and the main chassis both being resin/plastic, I would pick up from one set of wheels on each bogie - I hate using plungers so shorted out six of the Slater's driving wheels. I then drilled a 0.7mm hole in the edge of each bearing flange on the shorted out side, although I have not used the centre bearing

coombe junction - Dries

Update - A little more progress on Board 3 last night. I have started to make the bases for the buildings in grey card and once I am happy with the profiles and the openings are cut, it will receive a cladding of evergreen corrugated sheet, lapped as required as per the prototype. Sorry about the cut down toilet roll holder...it's just that late last night I was looking for an 'off the shelf' cylindrical object that could represent the stone clad drum...it will be replaced by something more suit

I've become a wimp !

I have recently noticed something about my modelling habits. When I returned in 2001 I used a cold loft which it was not possible to heat, (or was pointless to try because of the drafts) so I simply made sure I had plenty of layers on. I used to have a long sleeve T shirt, then a rugby shirt and then a fleece jumper which was fine and if needed a fleece jacket.   Having just got my annual electricity bill and, I am wondering why now that I have a shed which is not draughty, I feel the need to

The mainline 09...

I've been keeping this one a secret for nearly 6 months... Ever since members day in the summer I've worked on this model and finally this month I can show you guys on here how I created it! Not until the next issue of Model Rail is out though so for now enjoy this teaser snap taken on Paxton Road on a summers day in 1998. 09007 shunts the MOD vans whilst 33019 brings in some wagons for a weekend possession on the mainline.   Keep your eyes peeled on my Workbench thread between Christmas a

coombe junction - Moorswater Dries

Update - Since mocking up Moorswater viaduct and finding a solution for a backscene, it has helped respark enthusiasm for the project. I have now started to look a Board 3, the final one in more detail. I had always hoped to complete boards 1 + 2 to slightly more detail before embarking on this, however it will help me view the layout contextually with all 3 on the go in various states. Obviously, there has had to be some compromises to include elements, however for me, the viaduct was fundament

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco in Photographic Grey

Had time for a quick dusting with grey primer, sorry Chris, they really show up the porosity in places. It really does not look this bad to the naked eye         looks like more fettling is needed before the black goes on but that's why we do the grey primer thing, it not only keys the top coat but it's great for showing those minor little imperfections.

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Assembly Completed

Following a trip to my local music shop I ended up with a Rotosound second bass string for the insulated pipework. I felt kinda silly as I have three fully strung basses in the wardrobe that I never even considered checking oh well.   So pipework is all done and I have also added the extra steps using Evergreen microstrip cemented in an "L" section for the undercab step and some scraps of phosphor bronze sheet for the smokebox steps.   Construction is done and following a good wash in warm

Working slowly on Ivatt tank dcc conversion

Well a few weeks ago I started taking apart the Bachmann Ivatt 2-6-2 Tank. After a bit of fiddling around I managed to remove the cover and then got rather worried when I saw the split chassis underneath... One hour later and about 10 screws I had succeeded in removing the wheels, baseplate, two chassis halves, the cylinders (that was a mistake and will have to glue those back) the cab and the motor. In fact the engine didn't look remotely like an engine anymore. With the engine in bits I was ab

Box van update...primed, and a mystery object

After a coat of Games Workshop Chaos Black spray (which is very expensive, but gives such a nice finish), the main body is now ready for it's slightly shinier coat of paint, just to break up the solid colour.     I've also made a start on another waggon, this one however is a bit more involved than the box van. It's not being built as part of my P-way train, but could conceivably run in it, but it is pretty much all of my own invention (I think, there may be one out there somewhere. But if

Why I model railways

Because it's a lot less stressful than playing with computers! New Mac purchased after patience finally snapped with my old PC. Now I'm on that horrible learning curve whilst I try and unlearn all those years of learned behaviour. Still, e-mail and internet configured this evening. Considering I'm way out of my comfort zone, I'm quite happy.

New Video from the RJR shed

I often think that video gives the vieweer a more 3D perspective than a still photograph can portray   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IiSQPOL-aQ   The next task is to fit the new sign on the factory wall, It will probably be mounted on a card back and then glued onto the rendered side face.

A place to shelter

It is fair to say progress has been slow this last couple of weeks, finding time has been a bit of an issue.   The orange growers now have a canopy...           I cant decide if the support posts are too thin ?? but they were all I had to hand.

Work starts on another high rise building

Yep, before the first one is completed, work has begun on the second high rise block - Southwark Towers. Overall sizes have been considered and design work based on photos and google has been sketched up. On my dining room table you can see some of the rough working drawings including a scale size footprint.         And this afternoon the first of the three wings went up. At 100 metres it's slightly taller than New London Bridge House but as soon as I've got the basic shape completed I'll

Shunting Puzzle

I've been working on the trackplan for the next Farthing layout, which will show part of a large GWR goods depot.       In order to improve the operating interest, I've decided to incorporate a shunting puzzle in the track plan. For anyone interested in shunting puzzles, I can recommend the excellent Model Railway Shunting Puzzles site, plus of course Carl Arendt's site. The simple plan above (not to scale) is an initial design, and may be revised. Any ideas for improvem
