Mark 5, By Accurascale

CS reduces the number of sleepers in the winter timetable as theres less tourist demand.

Currently those spares reduced off the sleeper this winter were sent to Booths for scrap a few weeks ago, so wont be coming back in this spring. Any shortfall (as has happened) just results in an even shorter train than normal.

Also note, if things go bump in the highland, it has been known for part of a train to work south, cancelling the other part, which can trip down the next day as an ECS.

Also, as seen a few pages back (and who knows might become standard practice for a few years), is the use of KX with 2 halfs of a sleeper (joined at Willesden ?) to/from KX as KX's platforms are not long enough, when Euston is unavailable for engineering works.

Hi all,

We had a good chat with one of the Caledonian Sleeper guys while in Glasgow to attend Model Rail Scotland recently.

While the Lowlander operations are relatively simple, the Highlander has the added complication that the split between Aberdeen and Fort William sleepers varies seasonally; in the winter more go to Aberdeen, in summer more are sent to Fort William.

cheers

Ben A.

Getting eighteen coaches and a loco would stretch the budgets of many of us, however desirable the train and all the fun of reproducing the shunting at Waverley. However, four or even eight coaches would be much easier to acquire and run. Class 67s have gone, so it would be stretching things to use one to haul a four coach set of Mk. Vs. It strengthens the case for a Dapol 73/9 considerably, I would think.

Hi there,

We agree and understand that, which is why we are doing most sets in 4 coach packs, or 6 in the case of the Aberdeen portion.

Cheers,

Fran

Perhaps. We don’t know what will burst upon the scene from Accurascale next. Dapol, however, was asking how many people would be interested in a 73/9. If Dapol is going to do it, it’s time to get weaving, because Dapol is not the quickest.

Hi there !

as per spec all the coaches and the DT feature NEM standard sockets in kinematic mounts. We will also be providing working dummy coupler bars so you can create a fixed rake, including spares for use with your 68 or your kadees should also work well.

Hope that helps!

Stephen

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. That's brilliant. I will definitely pre-order one or both of the TPE rakes now that I know that they will be compatible with the Dapol 68s. Also better still, I have a few options regarding couplings.

Caledonian Sleeper gives first look inside new trains on revamped website

3 APRIL 2019

Caledonian Sleeper has unveiled the first images from inside its new fleet of trains on a revamped website launched to mark the final countdown.

As well as showcasing the revitalised Caledonian Sleeper, the website – sleeper.scot –makes it easier than ever for people to book their magical journey and explore the destinations the trains reach.

The overnight rail service between London and Scotland will be transformed by the introduction of the £150m fleet, with a total of 75 new carriages set to make their debut.

Caledonian Sleeper’s new trains will begin operating by the end of May, initially on the Lowlander route between London and Glasgow / Edinburgh. They will subsequently debut on the Highlander route between London and Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William.

Designed to accommodate the modern-day traveller, bookings can already be made for travel on the new trains from 2 June. Once the official introduction date is confirmed, the booking system will be updated.

Guests on the new services will be able to enjoy a range of accommodation types, including rooms with double beds and en-suites – for the first time in the history of Caledonian Sleeper.

Compared to the current fleet, the new trains will provide significantly different and improved accommodation:
• Comfort Seats
• Classic Rooms (solo or shared use with an option of interconnecting rooms, toiletries included)
• Club Rooms (solo or shared use with en-suite and shower, station lounge access, breakfast, luxury toiletries included)
• Caledonian Double (double bed with en-suite and shower, station lounge access, breakfast, luxury toiletries included)
• Accessible Rooms (double or twin, toiletries included)

Ryan Flaherty, Serco’s Managing Director for Caledonian Sleeper, said: “The launch of the new Caledonian Sleeper is fast approaching and travelling on our service will be a truly magical experience that will transform travel between London and Scotland.

“I would encourage anyone interested in being one of the first to experience the new trains to book their travel on our new website, which has been completely revamped to reflect the monumental and exciting changes to our service.

“Caledonian Sleeper is competitively priced and means guests can avoid the hassle or additional costs of getting to and from the airport. It is the only way to be at your destination in plenty of time for early morning meetings or a full day’s sightseeing without the cost of a hotel.”

Combining travel to and from the heart of London with comfortable overnight accommodation, prices for Comfort Seats start from £45, Classic Rooms from £140 for Solo or £170 for Shared, Club Rooms from £205 for Solo and £250 for Shared and Caledonian Doubles from £335 for Solo and £400 for Shared. Various Railcard discounts may also apply, while guests are always assigned the best value ticket when making their booking.

Caledonian Sleeper fares have no hidden costs and allow guests to bring multiple suitcases or excess baggage on board without incurring any additional charges. And with centre-to-centre travel, there is an additional cost saving over flying as there is no need to pay for connections to take you in or out of the city. That means Caledonian Sleeper is not only the most civilised way to travel – it is also frequently the most cost effective.

With a 12-month booking window, it also means that guests can plan their travel well in advance. That is a major advantage over other train operators, where cheaper advance fares are usually only available from 12 weeks before travel.

The new Caledonian Sleeper coaches were constructed by CAF in Spain at a cost of over £150m, part funded by a capital grant from Scottish Ministers of £60m.

Testing has been underway across the UK throughout 2018 and early 2019, while the coaches are currently undergoing final fitting out in the Central Belt.

Can we have some on the Great Western...??!!

7 coaches passed through Haltwhistle this morning, 693R Tees Dock-Polmadie behind 66418, this possibly means 1 is still at the Dock.

Hi everyone,

We had a busy (but most enjoyable and productive!) day at Glasgow Traincare Centre (or Polmadie Depot as most of us know it!) surveying the Caledonian Sleeper Mark 5 stock with our good friends at Revolution Trains!

Now the Class 92 is finished at the CAD stage and in China, we can turn our focus to the mammoth project that is the Mark 5. We have already surveyed and done a chunk of CAD on the TPE stock, but the sleeper stock was the final piece of the puzzle, until today.

Now that we have the final pieces of data we require for the sleeper stock, we can crack on with the 3D CAD work. We have a lot of this information already, but it was great to be able to validate measurements and drawing information, as this can alter a great deal between design and manufacture of the real thing. We never truly trust manufacturers drawings!

The new stock is certainly impressive, and will lend itself as very nice subject matter in model form. We like our detail after all, and these coaches will be dripping with it when they hit your layouts early in 2020.

We would like to extend a sincere thanks for the staff at Caledonian Sleeper and CAF for facilitating us today, and of course our customers who have supported us with all your pre-orders. We thought these coaches would be popular, but my word not this popular! You can order from our website if you wish to join in! https://accurascale.co.uk/collections/mark-5-coaches

Cheers,

Fran

So Looking through the list of Mk5 Sleepers on the website, I did spot one glaring omission in the range...

None of them are going to London Euston.

Also for the next couple years Kings Cross is likely to appear as a frequent destination... as a 12 Coach rake, here was last Saturdays 12 CS related workings in and out of KX... it was almost like the old days, with all the LE movements..

Alternative destination...
