RMweb Gold The Pilotman Posted June 9, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 9, 2020 (edited) Worst name on a locomotive; where do you start? There are dozens of names that shouldn’t be on the side of a dustbin, never mind a locomotive. Even as a teenager I thought that naming an HST power car “Top of the Pops” was rather insulting. And I still do, so despite it being just one contender in a very strong field, that’s my suggestion. Either very early 1939, or March onwards. 4813 was damaged in an accident in 29 January 1939, and not put back into service until 11th March. It doesn't seem like a cold winter day... so later, maybe? Looking at other photographs of 48xx V2s and the photo I have of 813, I do agree that it's 4813 we're looking at, not 813. Good catch. Highly appropriate that it should be stuck on the side of a class a class 315, itself the epitome of utter mediocrity.

RMweb Premium TrevorP1 Posted June 9, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 9, 2020 I'm going to go for 'Pretty Polly' as well. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 9, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 9, 2020 The 7.43 Sunderland- KX now, for some reason a Heaton duty, but it did bring us the possibility of one cop each day. Sir Vincent Raven was a very occasional sight, but here he is today. One of those memories from sixty years ago which has stuck is Sir Vincent passing through Retford on the Up main one morning. It seemed to be going very fast. I can still close my eyes and see it. 24

Hi Neil The loco was named after Princess Alexandra, 2nd Duchess of Fife, but following her marriage in 1913 to Prince Arthur of Connaught, Alexandra was referred to as HRH Princess Arthur of Connaught, in accordance with the tradition that a wife normally shares the title and style of her husband.
