Class 66 photos

A rare visit by 162 to the "Elephant house" in Tavi Junction yard having some investigative work undertaken.

One TOC charged the 'loco's owner' about 2 grand for the use of their pit for the day. So nice to see cross company cooperation in this day and age of the modern railway don't you think?! :fool:

Facilities like this are assets pure and simple these days, any TOC would be daft not to charge another for using it! Way of the modern railway, I'm afraid. Our fuelling point at Bardon Hill is the same, woe betide anyone who tries to 'borrow' it without asking...!

You can't avoid them, but you can try and make the photos interesting:

66188 came through on a nice long rake of TTA tanks.  Would appreciate knowing what the working actually was.

That would be 6V62 Fawley to St Philips Marsh. Will split in Eastleigh Yard with most heading off to St Philips Marsh, while the rest go North on the Didcot trip and maybe a few for Eastleigh Depot.

Andy.

Just out of interest, who 'owns' Tavy Jcn shed, i'd always kinda assumed it was DBS's as it's 'their' yard?

I think we've had 66709 in it's recent livery with the ship, this is it's original look, seen here climbing away from Felixstowe North in April 2007....one of my favourite places on the network this, and a decent load, steep grade and multiple S curves means you know even a normally quiet 66 is working hard...

Its used by Colas now Martyn, they maintain their tampers in there. Its normally fairly busy, you often see tampers inside having inspection's and maintenance going on.

That's only the second time ive seen a loco in there over the last 10 years though, the first being a Colas 47 just after the launch of their house colours.

I would hazard a guess that the building is hired from DBS, as you say, they own the rest of the land.

Yeah I agree, Nidge.

I suppose I liked that ole school BR kinda thing from days past where we were all the same 'firm'. Old habits etc

As you say, that's business.

well i could certainly bore you with pics of 66s having looked through my photobucket library, so i'll just post a few more interesting shots!

brand new fastline 66's, i was the first person to drive them mainline, this is their first run from crewe to derby

the em2000 screen in 66301, note the mileage!!

dropped 2 of them off and picked up a drs example which i then took to doncaster, seen here in clay cross

DSCF2047.jpg

real bit of history, neither thelocos exist in this colour and the colliery (daw mill) has shut!!

one of my favorite pics i took of a fastline 66 on LBT

olive mount cutting, the schenker 66 was at the time the only one painted that way

Image576-1.jpg

ews 66 in toton, note the white roof and lack of brakes!!

I can't offer anything rare unlike beast but how's this...

GBRf 66717 on the Crewe L&Nwr - Carlisle

This is OK rare as it was this particular beasts first visit to Warrington bank quay

Seems to be based on the WCML now as I saw it again L/E again today...

Anyway here it is on its first visit to Warrington BQ8480681523_123d35c3c8_b.jpgGBRF 66717 @ Warrington by Swifty11Productions, on Flickr

Tom.

got to say tom thats a cracking photo!

hate to dissapoint you though but that wouldn't have been 717s first trip to warrington, it was one of my regular performers on the old fastline LBT to ratcliffe or ironbridge trains back in 2009-2010, not as regular as barbie liveried 66725 "sunderland" though!

if you look carefully you can see the door at the other end is swapped over too

Looks like the doors were swapped on this side before released to traffic. The cab doors on a 66 are handed - but not as you think. The doors on one side can be swapped on that side only. The door handles are mounted towards the no1 end (in the case of a 66, the no1 end is NOT the cooler group)

66013 has (had?) swapped doors on the side that has only one large bodyside grille.

Hi Mick,

You bet me to it!

66013 showing both doors swapped on one side.

Plus a couple of other livery variations!

Cheers,

Phil.

regards the doors, there is a subtle difference between the doorway on an early 66 and later low emission type

the later ones have a lip on the bottom of the door hole that can either be useful or a hinderance, if you were getting down in the dark you could feel the edge of the footplate by your toecap touching the lip however if you have a mixture of locos (such as at drs and fastline) you would either miss the lip if it wasn't there and have the possibility of stumbling through the doorway or trip over it if it was there whenyour not expecting it!

I blame those on north-west gen for saying on 6 posts [admin edit to remove potentially offensive term]

"rare 66717 just thrashed through Stafford maximum powerrrr" and stuff like that

And the guy who was there with me said it was its first visit
