I know most of the photos are of them on the Western, but I just don't see them as Western locos. Must be something to do with seeing them from new and working on one or two at Kingmoor.

Its the complete opposite for me, but probably because the first time I saw one was at Castle Cary in 1978.

Some photos of 50's pre-refurbishment with the Loco number in the head code panel.

All from August 1978 -36 Years ago - ouch !

50007

Just two slight corrections. The numbers in the blinds were in the late summer to autumn of 1976 not 1978 but the reference on your photo also states this.

This isn't 50 007, the BR sign on the side is too high for it to be this loco. The blind was probably 0000 originally but has vibrated around. The only 2 locos with the BR sign that high were 50 002 and 50 016, both of these both got their numbers in the blinds by September 1976.

Just as an aside I have been looking to model this time period for about the last 20 years. Books at the time said along the lines that "some of the Class 50s got their loco numbers (abbreviated) in their blinds", from photos posted on the net by people like your good self I now have a list of 38 locos of the class having this done.

I must therefore thank you as I had no record for 50 013 until you posted your photos.

For completeness 2 more had headlights in the box (50 003 and 50 035), 4 locos still had 0s (50 012, 50 022, 50 025 50 049), 1 loco was in works (50 026), 50 044 had 0044 and 1044 displayed which leaves me just 50 001, 50 004, 50 015 and 50 018 for which I have no information for September/October 1976.

A quartet of 50s (8% of the fleet) at Penzance some time in the mid-80s. From left to right are 050 on the Paddington sleepers, 016 (hiding behind the third sleeper), 012 on a short rake of Mk1s and 039 on a rake of Mk2 aircons. Scanned from a negative.

You've got to love the car parked on the platform.

Were they always BR blue? Or were the very first ones built in '67 ever BR two tone green?

The only two tone green one was 50044 which was painted whilst its been preserved as a 'fictitious' one off, about 7 years ago I think. Not 100% certain about the date it was painted as I don't have much interest in fictitious livery's myself.

They were all delivered from EE in all over BR blue and full yellow ends and D numbers.

Great snaps of Ramillies, thank you. A minor observation: think your second picture is possibly Andover, judging by the platform canopy in the background (and the trees). The canopy is the wrong profile for Salisbury. 72B for ever!

Kind regards,

Paul
