  1. Past hour
  2. That is exactly what I'm doing at the moment. I have a number of deadlines though P4 jubilee competition entry form has to be submitted in August but then I have 2 years to build it. In the meantime I have a number of layouts that are already built that will be going to shows. What it's going to be is still up for grabs but there needs to have potential for a few jokes in it. Marc
  3. Then come over to the Leeds Show in October then.. full breakfasts are available and.. Puddings available at lunch... Baz
  4. My son-in -law has done his own research and is having his system fitted this week. Sadly his apex is facing north to south so his panels will be facing both east and west on a much steeper angle than normal (design of the house) plus he is getting quite a large battery. At the moment he has a hybrid car and charges it at night on cheap rates, part of his plan is to buy cheap electricity (Charging the panels up) at night after discharging his battery during peak hours for best export rates. Exactly how the balance works on when and where to charge and discharge works I assume is controlled by an application based on weather forecasts. But he likes all types of electric gadgets etc
  5. You dont necessarily have to take to a post office - there is an option to have items collected although you are then stuck in waiting. You can also use a delivery office which might be closer (and more likely to be open earlier). On which note, I need to pack and get off to mine!
  6. The major parts for the tramway diorama have now printed, so more painting is next on the agenda. Today's wet weather will be less helpful in the drying stakes. @009 micro modeller posted an image last year of the surviving track, linked again here, apparently 18.5", which sounds like a nominal 18" either with wear or possibly centre-centre. But I fear that Ruby will have long gone to the glue factory. https://www.rmweb.co.uk/forums/topic/163553-abandoned-rails-in-the-roador-elsewhere/page/32/#comment-5042005
  7. Iirc Saudi officially banned Slavery in 1961, however, the Koran says one of the best things you can do is free a slave. There are those who turn that round and say to do the best thing therefore, you must own slaves in the first place... To a Saudi non payment of promised wages or purchases is just negotiation on the amounts. Leaving many how have come from other countries stuck without payment ... Mooring Awl, Couldn't get to sleep again, forepaws and right ankle complaining of lowering air pressure, then.... Ten minutes after I did, I was woken by SWMBO, she was using a projector to mark out a new painting of a certain black and white Collie. When she went to turn the lights back on, there was a pop and all the upstairs lights went off.. So I had to reset the breaker , she can't reach it.. it appears one of the mini fluorescent bulbs has failed. So that will be replaced by a LED bulb later. Then I got about 2.5 hours sleep and was awoken by Ben woofing in his sleep.. so I decided to have a look outside and finally I've seen the Aurora Borealis. To the north east a flickering sheet of light, only in black and white to my eyes. After that 2.5 hours sleep Ben came for a pat on the head, 1 hours sleep.. Ben the happy but wanting reassurance Collie has been on a full morning patrol, heavy dew, sunny through light thin cloud, patches of blue Welkin, with mostly white but occasionally grey cloud. Yes I did calculus at school, did I understand it? Not particularly, it was just a wandering range of strange shapes on a blackboard, written by an unenthusiastic teacher, no good reason was given for using it. Not till i reached Fluke did I use it, by which time I was 50, it was a struggle even with often starting from formula examples that were just typed into Excel. Just saw a piece on TV about Hugh Fernley Whittingstall's book, he had cake on the table, lemon, courgette and honey cake.. he said it was like LDC, Hippos and Bears may wish to know the target zone is the BBC studios at Salford... Plans for today, Paint some black markings on notice boards indicating the direction to an unmentionable exhibition... Time I think for break
  8. Robinson 04 on an inter regional goods
  9. Ey up! It's Tuesday which is over 60s cricket day so.. its raining ... PAH! Awaiting a call to confirm its too wet..problem is.. the away team may want to turn up.. in which case they need to be wary of the fickle finger of fate... Time to... sit and wait.... Baz
  10. Saw a Slaters kit today in an old style box with all the parts laid out so clearly opened thus second hand/used (which is part of the problem - If they went back to calling things second hand there wouldn't be the same scope for misinterpretation). Listed as new and even wrote in the description that it is brand new and asking for what you'd pay at Tower for a genuine new one. Out of interest I tried to report it and their AI wouldn't let me submit, saying the reason wasn't legitimate.
  11. Your post assumes that conventional signalling and existing equipment (AWS/TPWS/etc) is free. It's not. The transition certainly leads to higher costs in the short-term, but once you make the switch you have reduced costs: for example new trains in Europe are already all ETCS compatible - therefore, new trains for Switzerland are now cheaper because they don't have to bother with adapting and installing legacy signalling equipment in them (in fact they're not allowed to, new trains must be certified with ETCS for Switzerland). Moreover you don't have to pay inflated prices for a safety system that is only used in one country, instead you have a bigger market, more suppliers, and presumably lower prices. Once could argue that the UK needs different trains and won't benefit from European standardisation due to gauging anyway - but that's also not relevant for signalling discussions: the underlying software and electric systems are going to be reused between contintental and British trains. Focusing on signal removal is missing the forest for the trees.
  12. Not sure what’s up with Frank. Horace told him he’s a barrel of laughs today which didn’t help.
  13. Spirit In The Sky.....Norman Greenbaum
  14. Yep. The first 379s are being cycled through Hornsey as part of the work to return them to service.
  15. I have obtained my late friend's photos who never recorded numbers, dates or locations. Here is a photo from a fresh box of slides and shows class 40 40156 which looks like it was photographed from a passing train. The sign on the building says Macson Ltd. According to Google there currently seem to be a few Macson; Glasgow, Hinckley, Northamptonshire, etc. Can anyone identify the location and/or a rough date?
  16. Is there nothing that can be done about the mis-use of public Status updates? Newbie users still use it to make contact with their pals. Sometimes when I go to the forums main page, the Status Updates panel is missing completely and the Blog Entries panel moves up to fill the space. That seems ideal to me! The vast majority of status updates are irrelevant or inconsequential so I don't think it would be a great loss if that panel was permanently removed! Or maybe just moved to a less prominent position?

  18. But that was what he was accused of alleging falsely. (That someone else had said it.) He presented the proof that indeed, someone else had said it. I don't think it was alleged at any point that it was true? The only way to do that would be to put the two models, the 08 and the coach in question, beside each other and take a photo, wouldn't it ? And compare that to a photo of real 08 coupled to the same kind of coach ? Or am I missing something?
  19. That law clearly isn't worth the paper its written on because several resignalling schemes have been carried out in recent years where lights on sticks have been replaced by new lights on sticks or semaphores have been replaced with lights on sticks. Sounds like the sort of law NR or whoever can cite to justify ETCS when it wants to but which can be totally ignored otherwise. Whatever the merits of it may be, the financial case doesn't add up at all. As has been said you save the cost of signals, their structures, cabling, and control modules albeit in what appears to be a slowly diminishing number of situations due to the belated realisation that fitting cabs is expensive. Presumably LED signals need little in the way of maintenance relative to those using conventional lamps so little will be saved there or else why has NR spend a fortune replacing just about every signal head in the country? Points will still fail, axle counters will still get confused, lineside modules will still have nervous breakdowns, cables will still get eaten by rodents or nicked. The argument that fitting the fleet is a one off cost doesn't stack up either, for example the 700s have just had to have a very expensive ETCS upgrade to make them compatible with what's being installed on the ECML. I expect that to become a regular feature and ongoing cost. Another hidden cost is diminished fleet inter-changeability. I've already mentioned the likely compromising of diversion options and things like GN borrowing a couple of GX 387/2s to cover a short term lack of availability isn't going to be an option any more. I know GN are getting the 379s which may make that specific example a moot point but in general moving stock around in future will be more difficult and costly. Even when stock is fitted we may get a 700 type situation where one route is on version 97 and the stock is on version 65 or whatever. We're already seeing stock with potentially useful life being scrapped, the requirement for ETCS on some routes and the cost of fitment or upgrade will just make that more likely.
  20. I can remember when the 405 ran from Horsham to Reigate, does it still do that? It was a LT Green Line service.
  21. The most prolific TT120 modeler isn't on RMWeb at all, as far as I know.
  22. Good morning folks, Seeing gwrrob's photos I am glad I have got a couple on pre-order. Like steamingwales and Mark S, there are so many tempting new wagons appearing. I am tempted to acquire some more. Good shout 46444 on the music, I will have an 'ear worm' now about Heaven 17 😄 Cheers, Nigel.
  23. But state governments also used to be at the whim of the individual premiers, but most if not all, have fixed terms of 4 years now. This has changed in the past 20 years. I still don't see the point of having a temporary appointee. We did have a major issue in the 70s because of a senator who died (for senators, a replacement is appointed in such cases, but is not temporary, but until the next election) and his replacement was a dodgy one, because he didn't represent the late senators party, but the opposition. It led to the events of 11/11/75, perhaps you might recall the circumstances - a notable day in Australian politics. Almost as a notable date in politics as 5/11/1605.
  24. The issue I have found with this Wifi system is that if there is a short circuit, while the track power is automatically restored the Wifi has to be manually restored. I have got around this by adding a district switch to the DCC output, which trips before the main unit.
