RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted February 10, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 10, 2016 Craigellachie Paul The name appears to be readable on the right hand building. My answer was a simple - whats between Keith and Elgin ? without looking at the company.

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted February 11, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 11, 2016 Most are definitely Doncaster so I suspect the other one (No.2) is too, especially as it is the same engine as appears in No.3.

RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted February 12, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 12, 2016 Cracking shots of Donny! Given the proliferation of diesels with yellow panels and a shiny Brush type 4 I'm guessing 62/63? Phil
JeffP
Might be even earlier given the prototype Deltic there? 1961?
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted February 12, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 12, 2016 Might be even earlier given the prototype Deltic there? 1961? That picture could be earlier but the Brush Type 4s didn't begin to appear until 1962 and according to one website D1518 wasn't delivered until 1963. RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted February 12, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 12, 2016 Cheers Mike The Prototype deltic went to the Science museum in April 63 - see http://www.napier-chronicles.co.uk/dp1_28-4-63.htm- and D1519 didn't enter traffic until April too see http://www.class47.co.uk/c47_numbers.php?index=6&jndex=1&kndex=18&s_loco=1519. Given the dirty state of DP1 in this photo it must have had at least a darn good clean if not a repaint before becoming an exhibit so one might suspect these photos are not all from the same date Presumably it was the influx of Brush Type 4s that finished off the East Coast Pacifics in 1963? I suspected 60523 Sun Castle would have gone by that date but no... June 1963 was her nemesis, with fellow class members Herringbone and Steady Aim surviving until 1965! One has to wonder what work they were doing by that date.... Phil
JeffP
Up in Scotland, like the rest of the remaining East Coast pacifics. There are photos of both on Polmadie. 1963 it could be, but steam was a rarity at Doncaster by that time, iirc the plant closed to steam that year too. Maybe my memory is false, maybe 1964 was the year steam went north of Donny? I DO remember going to York around 1965 where there was steam, but only one passenger loco at Doncaster, 60063 Isinglass, which was deputising for a failed diesel further north. To our delight it was removed at Doncaster and we were able to visit the cab.

RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted February 12, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 12, 2016 The prototype Deltic was regularly working KX - Doncaster on Hull service up to when it failed in service around 24 November 1960, returning to Vulcan on 26th November. It didn't run again AFAIK. The steam pictures would be around 1962/3 given the blinkers and FS repainted. The diesels would be 1962/4, after SYP came in, and the Brush 4 having entered service c4/64. jonny777
The photo of Flying Scotsman has some interesting stock in the background. In the bay platform appears to be a single car diesel unit, but of the early Derby lightweight pattern - unless my eyes are playing up. From memory, there were a couple of those built but I thought they were based on the branch to Buckingham. The coaching stock in front of the works almost looks as if it contains a Bulleid vehicle, but I am sure it is just a Mk1.

And it is a sobering thought that according to the class47 site, 27 years have passed by since D1519 was cut up. Which is longer than it was in service. JeffP
You got in before me. A4's were used on fast fitted freights, the Scotch Goods being only one such.

It was (is) a darker shade than when in traffic which is why the NRM did different paint jobs on their model - initially 'as preserved' and later 'as running'. RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted February 13, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 13, 2016 For any who doubted it, note the Southern Railway van in the bay platform behind Deltic. They really did get everywhere, so recent 4mm releases could be used on many layouts of the era.

Ah, now I have been puzzling that one and I think I have the answer - it's an Inspection saloon. My money is on DE320206 a (small_ picture of which - at Doncaster - is to be found on this page (about 2/3rds of the way down immediately about a colour pic of a Met 4 wheeler) - https://www.rcts.org.uk/features/archive/search.htm?subtype=3&company=LNER
