Mmm, might go for the set track option too.

Slightly concerned that you're not using the entire baseboard for track. Plenty of room for an mpd, sidings, parcel depot, dairy, royal mail depot... What are you thinking man?

Also a little concerned about the amount of track. Are you going to have enough space for the vans, the opens, the coals & the milks?

I can see somewhere for the coals and vans to go but am lost on the opens and milks. More sidings needed definitely.

There will be no milk, no broccoli, no clay hoods and certainly no vans (vans weren't used on the branch as they fouled the winding drum at the incline top). There will be opens and coals though.

Progressed on to board 3 tonight, the next length of goods shed siding has been laid and the sleepers for the long turnout stuck down, at 17 inches long it wouldn't look out of place on the ECML.

Interesting. So was this branch accessed via a drum operated incline then or was that a branch off the branch? If the first case, how did the locos get to the end? Were a couple trapped on the terminus side of the incline?

Very disappointed about the vans situation.

A very long incline to access the branch, locos and brakevans went up around the outside of the drumhouse, locos with the centre wheels removed and they stayed up there as long as possible, there were good facilities at the shed including sheerlegs for lifting.

Hi Paul,

great stuff as always!

I know its a prototype track plan, but how would you run round an in coming train without the loco going onto the coal cells, which I assume is a no no? Was there a loop off the modelled area?

Or is it a case of two locos in steam?!

Just spent a very enjoyable few hours reading the background to this line, tracing its route on google maps, and generally marvelling at the beauty and wildness of the setting, particularly so close to an industrial heartland.

It's a fantastic site to build a model of. I've been following for quite a while, but hadn't really appreciated the stunning location.

By the way, I think you're being a bit unfair to Stubby: there are caravans all over Rosedale Abbey.

Hi Paul,

As you can tell from my various "likes" etc I have only today come across your latest NER project so I will now follow.  Fantastic modelling, very evocative and quite unique IMHO.

Best Regards,

Brian.

Only one loco, the whole of the east branch was one section. I'm assuming they ran round at the east mines and propelled round to the yard.

Do you know if the drops were rail head profiled girder rail or waybeams with chairs? Central division drops such as those on the Stainmore line were way beam based (NER 4 bolt common chairs) and it would appear locos were allowed onto them. Certainly Lartington was 15" square timber waybeams and had a sign stating "engines are allowed on these depots", as were Broomielaw and Bowes.
