An array of photos! I saw it south of Euxton Jn on the return, running 11 late past me after departing 9 late from Carlisle. Many trains were delayed between Carlisle and Carstairs, which could've held this up. RealTime's excuse for canned services was 'cancelled due to a fire away from the line'...

Could be an early or on time arrival back at Euston though - was 8 early for the stop at MK.

I had a plan to video the southbound working. My Dad and wife were travelling on seperate trains from Manchester area, both to due to arrive at Lancaster not long before the 88. So I drove down to pick them up with camcorder in pocket. That fire at Law Junction (near Motherwell) was disrupting services between Preston and Lancaster. After chatting to helpfull Virgin staff, best option was to drive all the way to Preston to pick them up.

Not a happy ending, having told Dad and SHMBO to wait by Preston station side entrance, I set off in car which has handsfree phone. One is waiting at Preston as requested, the other stayed on a train which has departed for Lancaster. Which one do I pick up? And I missed the 88 going south.

There were a couple of trains waiting in Platform 1 which was the scheduled platform for the charter. The ECS arrived in Platform 3 just 1 minute down. There was a slight delay before departure.

The 88 is 88003 "Genesis" seen here at Highley on the back of yesterday's return working:-

According to SVR website, 88003 will not be running Saturday.

There is a 68/88 double header railtour to look out for.

It'll no doubt be earning revenue on the SVR. Who benefits most I'm not sure, but some people will be going to get some 88 haulage who otherwise wouldn't be going to the SVR on that day.

No idea if it's earning revenue for DRS by doing so, though.

A big thanks to Mick for this info, otherwise I'd have missed this completely! Seen at Balshaw Lane Jn this morning running 6 early, with 88002 'Prometheus' leading and 68025 'Superb' tucked inside:

Hoping to catch it on the return. As it went round the Upperby curve, I'm hoping that the 88 will still be leading on the southbound run - as long as they haven't shuffled them at Appleby.

Cheers,

Mick

I had to see my parents in Manchester this morning and the way up I could see the back of a rake of Mk1's on the platform and assumed something had happened with today CME. Was pleasantly surprised to catch sight of 88002 and the 68 as we left Crewe. On the way back I also caught site of 86259 at the head of the return CME.

All in all a nice view of the first(ok nearly) and last of UK AC's locos and of course the APT in the heritage centre. That also looked better than I remember but I may be mistaken.

Anyway sorry to take this slightly off topic.

And here's the return working 1Z40 Appleby-Didcot Parkway.

88002 (on diesel power) leading 68025, locos in multi, climbing Langho bank.

A couple of pictures from yesterdays tour with 88002 and 68025. Did the whole lot with a few friends. 68027 in its 'minimal' DRS livery worked the tour from Didcot Parkway to Crewe, where 88002 "Prometheus" and 68025 "Superb" took over.

From Crewe, both 88002 & 68025 were in multi, giving us just over 9,100hp when 88002 was working on the overhead and 4,750hp when on pure diesel. It certainly shifted well when under the wires, with our departure from Crewe we were upto 100mph within 4 minutes. No doubt it would be quicker if complex pointwork wasn't needed to be negotiated. From Farrington Junction on the return working, 88002 was working solo on electric and preformed very well indeed. You could certainly feel the pull when the power was wound up! The braking was quite harsh though, with two jolts felt when the brakes were applied at any speed. I do wonder if the regen brakes kicked in on the locos before the air brakes on the rest of the train started to bite. Was the same when just 68027 was working.

Here's a few pictures.

The Northern Belle with 68002 "Intrepid" & 68017 "Hornet" was due through Appleby 20 minutes after we arrived. It passed through as 88002 & 68025 were reversing into the siding.

I only ever seem to see 88s away from the wires. In an almost identical spot to post#170, 88004 leads 68016 on 1Z40 Appleby-Newport about 30 minutes ago......
