Ugly Cars

I wish I still had my last car, a 1993 Escort Estate. It looked quite nice, and did everything I wanted. Except it wasn't suitable for living in when I went travelling, so it went. If I could have kept it, I hope it would be nicely restored by now, and good for another decade or two. I really don't want to get rid of my 1999 house on wheels, as almost everything recent looks pretty awful. Not that I know what most of them are any more, or care that much.

I must be the odd one out as I like the MB GLA, to me it is not so much an SUV as the car that the A Class should have been. We looked at the A Class and whilst it is quite pretty (to our eyes) the packaging is very poor and the engines decidedly average and with a harsh ride. Given it is more expensive than its rivals it is not really very good that it is such a middle mediocre - average car. The GLA seemed to address the packaging issues and it felt more comfortable, it also drives like a regular car. The main problem was the price, it is not cheap and you can get some seriously good cars for the price of a decent spec GLA. Hence my wife went for a VW Golf, painfully conventional and average looking but an excellent car in every way (well, maybe apart from emissions).

On style I think the current car scene is no different to any other period in automotive history, a few stand out cars which look outstanding and the great mass of cars which just look average.

Just about anything 1970s?

I'll note that the Lamborghini Miura was not designed in the 1970s, so please don't offer that up as a counter-example. (I'm not a fan of "the wedge" era.)

Porsche 917K.

And the argument that it was a racing car is invalid, since there are two road legal examples in existence.

Regards,

Matt

Mind you, looks-wise it's like Helen of Troy compared to the pretend off-roader that bears the Mini badge - that really has had a good thrashing with an ugly stick.

Is that after her face launched a thousand ships?

I saw a Mercedes GLA250 yesterday. What were they thinking?

Perhaps MB is trying to look a bit more "21st Century", but they seem to gone completely bonkers with this thing.

(I hope I haven't offended too many RMwebbers :)  )

I can't say I find the Mercedes in the first post too horrible.......

Awe! not that bad.....

I must admit it looks much better in the photos than it does in real life.......

An amusing thread and there are some real mangers mentioned along the way, but I think your opening example is way off the mark Andy. The GLA is OK and from several angles is a good looker.

It doesn't look so good in certain colours though and the AMG body styling versions are a must. The SE is a no no, style wise

My wife has had one for almost 2 years and for more than 6 months after she first got it, lots of people approached her to ask questions and say they liked the look of it. Youngsters think it's rather "Cool" looking too.

I totally agree with that.

The A Class is a good looker, but feels a bit claustrophobic inside. The ride is very firm.

The GLA in comparison, rides very well and is much more spacious inside, particularly in the larger rear and with the bigger load area.

Price wise, it's way too expensive, just like its competitors, the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. The larger Nissan Qashqui and Mazda CX-5 offer much better value.

?...A bloke down the road from me has a Juke and loves the way it drives but hates the interior which is unbelievably small compared to its outside proportions.

I think it surprises a lot of people to find the Puke is quite small on the inside.

Then again, it's based on the same platform as the recent Micra and current (2nd generation) Renault Twingo.

Had a square box for a hire car on my recent UK trip.  Dacia Duster.  Ridiculous name, unrefined styling, superb car to drive and probably the second-best ever after the Kia C'eed

....as does the Range Rover Evoque. I'm surprised anyone can see out of one of those.

You want to try driving one if your over 5ft 8in tall I'm 6ft 1in and ended up with a very stiff neck after only a very short journey.

Yes the lights and ugly bumps on many modern cars are just atrocious. No "streamlining" anymore, like the rather nice Yank Tank brianUSA has above. I'd like one of those.

Brit15

Apparently the bumps are done to add strength to panels, now they are made out of thinner metal to reduce their weight. Imagine the creativity occurring in design offices one Monday morning a few years ago when Der management announced to their minions that every car on the drawing board had to be "improved".

I quite like the bonnet and headlight humps, it's like driving an old Jag (and about as reliable...).

Hi

Not sure that many current cars stand out enough to be ugly.

However a couple of years ago I was on the motorway and came across a BMW X6 (I think), which had some kind of styling kit on it. They are not good looking at the best of times and that one looked truly hideous.

A couple of people have mentioned the big, "bloated" Mini Countryman

Maybe they should have just called them the Maxi.

All the best

Katy
