Ebay Scam listing

It's gone already!

I did report it to ebay so perhaps they were quick to deal with it.

It was a Roco DB Class 420 unit for £22.84 free post - odd to start with!

The whole listing had been copied from one of the Trains 4 U listings with contact details etc.  The only thing that was different was an ebay seller  with a feedback of 0 and the fact that the item was in China.

There seem to be a few of these springing up.

There was an Arnold N gauge set for £8.80 (including post) that was a scam picked up on the N gauge forum.

As ever, if it looks too good to be true it probably is.

Whilst eBay and PayPal will refund lost money in these circumstances the scammers can still get away with your funds, your name, address, email, phone number, eBay user name and PayPal account name. Not good!

I think I tried to make a purchase from this seller this morning - a Hornby Clan for £22.83 (warning bells should have been ringing, I know) but fortunately PayPal refused to make the payment and advised me to contact them. I initially thought my PayPal account had been hacked and was unusable but I checked and all seemed fine. Clearly PayPal had my best interests at heart, thankfully. I saw another listing from the same seller this afternoon - a Bachmann 108 for about £23 including free postage from China. If it seems too good to be true, etc, etc......

I had noted a LU Museum Class 66 in Sir Peter Hendry livery for just short of £24... It looked properly out of place. This was followed by a Dynamis Ultima for around £40. I was tempted, but saw it was China and steered well clear. Looks like someone brought both, but they took quite a while to sell - suggesting that people were unsure!

I don't think you get a response. I've reported a couple - one which was "bought" in the meantime and one that was removed. Within a few hours it was back at a slightly higher price, same (copied) description - unfortunately it may mean someone's trying to find a more plausible price.

Has the scam listing is still on I've reported it to Ebay. Had to list it under fraudulent activities as they don't seem to have anywhere to give information about one listing copying another listing.

Paul that is also true of any seller.

A real seller has a legitimate use for it and should abide by data protection and consumer rights legislation.

The same can't be said of a scammer.

Hi

True but the scammer now has your details such as real name and address.

Cheers

Paul

These details can easily be obtained by legitimate means.

Slightly OT here but individual "Sellers" aren't bound by the data protection act.

A scammer could easily sell a low value item which is received by the buyer who is now lined up for a scam later by the "trusted seller"

Let's face it for years people worried about keeping their bank account and sort code number private, yet were quite happy to pay by cheque to a complete stranger. Guess what- printed on the cheque are those very details.

We can get paranoid about these things.

They don't want your setails, they just want your money.

Not true. 'Live' details, especially of people who are gullible/greedy are a tradeable commodity on the darker reaches of the web.

Mind you, they won't say no to your money either!

Why get stitched up with crazy interest rates for a payday loan when you can flog a non-existent item on ebay and use the buyer's money for a few weeks instead.......

The scammers now seem to be listing UK addresses as their location instead of China. Two different new sellers are listing the same identical Triang BoB loco (items 152570416937 &  322541201776) both with an starting price of about £1.50. They give their locations as Kent and Dorset. One of these fake sellers also has a medal listed which has received a couple of bids.
