Baz ...because there are groups with certain financial and philosophical interests in denying climate change who are using all the means they have to attempt to decouple these fires from any hint that climate change has any link to causing them. It is entertaining to watch the groundskeepers at the Australian Open power-wash the brown mess off outside courts before play can start. Actually the sky here is very orange to the west at the moment so I guess we are going to cop it too. SRman Posted January 23, 2020 Share Posted January 23, 2020 I washed my car before we did a trip up to the border over the weekend: drove to Kyabram where we stayed for two nights and went through a storm on the second evening, which nicely washed the road dust off again. We drove to Echuca, where we spent another night. It rained for most of that day in Echuca, and the car remained clean. Drove back to Melbourne on Tuesday, all good, nice and clean when we got home. Reports indicate that the aircrew were from the US. Coulson Aviation (which is the Australian subsidiary) is part of Coulson Aircrane based in British Columbia. Canberra copped the worst of that hailstorm. One of our daughters and her husband live in Canberra, near Belconnen, and where they are was hit by that hailstorm. A monster hailstone put a hole the size of a cricket ball in one of the front windows (which subsequently cracked from corner to corner), the canvas awnings were shredded, their car is now full of dents (although, unlike a lot of other cars nearby, at least it still has all its windows, so it is drivable), roof tiles got cracked, water got into one room, and the garden looked like it was under a blanket of snow. The insurance company got someone to put a patch over the missing glass in the window but, after a couple of days it cracked from corner to corner and began to come poose, so they arranged for someone to replace the glass. Anything that isn't urgent or necessary for safety reasons looks like it's going to have to wait, as all the tradies in Canberra are so busy now...... First column is actual temperature which isn't too out of the ordinary, but the 'feels like' temperatures in column 2 - over 50 degrees... Anyone else seen them over 50 before anywhere? The Persian Gulf cities can be pretty bad. Temperatures in the range of 49°C have been recorded in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Doha has recorded temperatures of 50°C. I don't know what their "feels like" temperatures are but even at these temperatures, the Gulf is humid. Average summer high temperatures in these places exceed 40°C. Australia's record high temperature is (according to Google) 50.7°C in Oodnadatta but of course that is the Outback.
