Andrew P
Excellent Al, but I like the basic earthy shots from the phone, just wonderful and I wish I could do simples as you and Rob do with the Seep stories.

Thanks mate. I think they are growing on me... Both the earlier iPhone shots and the later camera ones were done using natural daylight only, and I haven't tweaked the colours before posting (well, except the black-and-white ones) so it's interesting to see how the different cameras interpret the light. The actual camera ( a FinePix F70) does give a cold, bleak look, whereas the iPhone is much warmer. The F70 is probably nearer the truth though, it's been a miserable day. The iPhone doesn't seem to focus as well as the F70 which is why the shots jar with me. It could be down to me not doing it right though... Al. Al, You do know you can tap on the screen on an iPhone, anytime your in camera mode, and the phone will focus at that point? Also have you tried an app called Moment (it might be a paid app, but really good only a couple of quid if I remember rightly), which allows you to change various values and also saves files as TIF if you want it rather than JPG, so can give a better image quality - the pictures still go into your photos app as before. Rich Hi Rich, Thanks yes, I did know about the spot focusing, the problem seems to be that if I use the camera zoomed, and then spot focused, it is a very sharp cutoff from where it is in focus, to where it's wildly out of focus. That app sounds good though, thanks, I'll look it out. Cheers mate, Al.

I do wish one of you two would change your Avatar or at least your Jackets, haha, OR are you really Twins? MrDobilina
How have I never thought of simply using cork as a way of modelling hard ground between rails before! Thank you for the idea and I will be following this layout with interest.

Overall it works OK, just the cork round the ends of the sleepers looks a bit wrong in places, but I'm trying to cover those up. Al.

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 13, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 13, 2019 A quick update, another small section of wall has been completed: This will go on the other side of the entrance road at the back of the layout, and there will shortly be a gate into the field. Thanks for looking, Al. 9
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 14, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2019 Some more work this evening on the walls and gate for the back corner field. So I built the gate, and painted the wall and two gateposts: Then I painted the gate, and washed the gateposts in Black Green to get the proper gritstone look: Then I fitted the hinges and hung the gate... Sigh. And it was going so well up till then... It's really not good... So I need a bigger gate. Ah well, something to do tomorrow... RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 14, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2019 Cheers Andy, It just looks like it's hanging in mid-air to me, I drilled the holes in the gatepost too high. I might see if I can just re-drill the gatepost with lower holes tomorrow as a first step. Cheers, Al. 1
RMweb Gold westerhamstation Posted February 15, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2019 Hi Al, that sounds like a plan, should be a simple fix. All the best Adrian.
lmsforever
Wow this is terrific all you need is a mist curling over the layout ,you have captured the feeling of a dismal Derbyshire backwater look forward to seeing more. 2

Being Bodgit, I would HIT the gatepost on the head with a big hammer to lower it, hahaha 5
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 16, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 16, 2019 I decided to go for a new, larger gate, after seeing it in situ, I wasn't happy with the size of the original. You can see here the difference in size from the original: And I think it looks better, and more in proportion: Here it is in position: The road surface has lifted a bit on that corner, so I need to stick that back down before it will look quite right. In the meantime I can carry on building the next bit of wall. Thanks for looking, Al. 9 1
RMweb Premium Bogie Posted February 17, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 17, 2019 Yep - had a gut feeling you would re-do it. Does look much better - well done.

RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted February 17, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 17, 2019 Re gates, an observation. Generally speaking, a lot of wooden farm gates, especially big ones, have sunk/collapsed at the non hinge end and run in a rut in the ground.
