Ladmanlow Sidings and other C&HPR locations

You may remember that some time ago I talked about making a yard crane for the layout.

After looking at all the options I decided to use most of the parts of the Peco kit. I took this decision, as I recognised that to create a convincing frame with all the mechanism meshing properly would be a tricky thing to do as a scratch build.

However, the Peco kit comes with an "H" girder metal jib, so I was going to replace that with round styrene tube to more nearly  match the wooden jib like the one at Conwy.

Having built it, however, It was really too large and overpowering for the layout, so as an alternative I've modelled it without the jib, as a derelict mechanism.

This isn't finally planted, as I'm still not sure whether  it really adds anything to the layout. I'll leave it for now, and see if it grows on me...

Lovely views Al.

This one in particular ticks the boxes for me.

Thanks very much all of you for your encouraging comments, it means a lot to me.

I'm warming to the derelict crane, but I'm not so fond of the big base it sits on, so I might substitute a smaller concrete plinth, and add a load of grass round it.

Where has this been hiding? Found my way here today and had to stay a while. Very nice, simple idea, well executed with a lot of atmosphere. Well done.

Thank you very much.

Sounds good Andy, How's this?

So first it's hairspray time, I masked up an area and drowned it in hairspray, then applied various lengths of static grass:

Then I glued down the new concrete base, and applied some tufts of longer grass:

And finally fitted the mechanism to the pillar:

here's a nice moody shot of the result...

I'm a lot more pleased with that!

Thanks for looking,

Al.

That's the way to do it, as Punch said to Judy!:fan:

Thanks mate.

I've tried to do as you said and apply some appearance of oil/grease round the bearings, not sure how successful this is:

Afternoon Al. This is all very timely. I am looking to add a yard crane jobbie to Bleat Wharf.

Is this the Wills example?

Hi Rob,

This is the Peco whosit, of the two I found it to be more detailed than the Wills one.
