I have drawn up a preliminary roster of locomotives for GQS based on photos and recorded observations from various books. The choice is wide but here is my (wish) list!

Peppercorn A1 60161 North British

Peppercorn A2 60530 Sayajirao

Thompson A2 60507 Highland Chieftain

Gresley A3 60094 Colorado

Gresley A4 60031 Golden Plover

B1 61140

Black Five 44968

Standard 5MT 73105

J37 64639

J83 68479

N15 69163

V1/V3 67664

D49 62708 Argyllshire

D34 62447 Glen Dochart

D11/2 62673 Evan Dhu

V2 60836

and

J36

Deltic

Swindon DMU

Class 101 DMU

Class 27

Class 21/29

Some will be more challenging than others, but plenty to keep me busy.

What progress have I made you might ask? Answer , I bought a Bachmann J72! A lovely model and of an Eastfield based loco but I have not seen evidence yet that it ever made it to GQS. More discipline required I hear you all shout!

Way back on page 1 I drew up this wish list of locos for GQS. It has evolved since but now more than 2 years on I have gone a good way towards acquiring some of the wished for stock. Here is the first selection.

So, what is left in my list?

I will need a couple of N15's and a J83.

I have started a D49 combining a Hornby loco with a Bachmann Director tender.

I have a J36 which i plan to repaint and renumber. I am going to replicate a weld repair to the tender which seemed to be fairly common in their latter days.

A Glen would be good and maybe a V2 also.

And of course a couple of Edinburgh/Glasgow intercity DMU sets.

Overall though I am happy with the acquisitions made so far. Most have been second hand.

Swindon Intercity DMU sets / Class 126s models would be fantastic, but I'm not convinced we'll see them any time soon from the RTR manufacturers and I'd think they would probably be behind Class 120s, 123s and 124s in terms of a most likely to sell queue. The Class 120 is one I'm really surprised we've never seen an RTR model of.

Silver Fox do offer Edinburgh - Glasgow sets as a kit . Even though they might not currently be listed , it’s worth giving them a call to see if they have anything in stock .

Signaller69 on here did make an Edinburgh to Glasgow set using shorter Trix coaches and a lot of cutting and shutting . There is a thread on here which he has usefully indexed , however the pictures have been lost when there were server  issues .

I think you are probably right. Mind you I was surprised Heljan went for the 104!

Thanks for that. I remember seeing the Signaller69 thread before the crash. Such a lot of work!

Of the DMU types, the 104 has to be a good choice with the numbers built, the areas worked in and long lives with plenty options for liveries. Its probably more surprising that Hornby went for the 110 rather than 104 all those years ago!

I didn't think Deltic's were common at Queen St, or was it just one working?

You are right Jools. There is a picture of one on the Queen of Scots pullman at GQS dated 26 May 1962. It may have been the only visit by a Deltic other than more recently in preservation.

Hi David. Not fully sure about the time frame you are modelling but from my research, there was a Deltic hauled daily named KX service from GQS in the 70’s. I suspect this also ran in the 60’s. (Photo of a Deltic on pullmans) During the mid eighties, there was 2 services a day, 1 departing at 0800 and a 2nd at 0830. These were HST sets which used to block the station throat so they literally came in, driver changed ends and straight out again.
Cheers.
Bill.

Thanks for that Bill. I am modelling fifties and sixties before the track layout changed. That said I intend to have an alternative seventies roster even though the track layout is wrong! That way I can model the trains I actually remember. Class 27 push pulls appeal greatly because I saw them on an almost daily basis in my teens. So your information is of great interest.

Cheers

Hi David.
I have seen photos on the internet of Deltic 16 being released from its stock after arrival at GQS which I think was around 1977/ 1978. Unfortunately I can’t find the link at the moment but will keep searching.
Regards.
Bill.

Deltics were occasionally used between Edinburgh and Glasgow prior to the introduction of the Summer 1962 timetable and, later on, once they began to be displaced by HSTs.  The latter period is outside my timescale but they were likely reported in Deltic Deadlines of the era.  Some references to the earlier period are as follows:-

Railway Observer February 1962:

  • During and after the New Year holiday period (1961/62), Deltics appeared in Queen Street, especially on the 9.30 am to Kings Cross on which D9016 was unusually banked by an EE Type 1 on 11th January.  On 28th December, D9013 worked through on the "North Briton".

Modern Railways March 1962:

  • The Deltics have recently begun working through to Glasgow Queen Street, one duty on which they have been seen covers the 5.15 pm from Edinburgh Waverley and the 8 pm back, which includes the Fort William-Kings Cross sleeping cars.

Lost Magazine!

  • A participant on a tour involving ex Caledonian steam power from Glasgow Central in late 1961 / early 1962 had a letter and photograph published in one of the magazines (Traction?).  The photograph depicted a Deltic at Queen Street (D9021 springs to mind but I may be wrong), the motive power for his return journey to Edinburgh after the tour and possibly the 8 pm departure referred to in Modern Railways.  This is the kind of thing I normally retain but unfortunately I find myself unable to locate the issue concerned!

I believe I read somewhere that these were driver training runs in preparation for the introduction of the Summer 1962 timetable.  These workings and the famous photograph of D9010 on the "Queen of Scots" all seem to depict Haymarket locos.  A copy of the Summer 1962 Deltic diagrams appears as an appendix in the book "Deltics at Work" by Allan Baker and Gavin Morrison.  Suffice to say that none of the diagrams show Deltics getting beyond Edinburgh.

Hope this is of some use.

Brian

Thanks for this, much appreciated.

Cheers

David

These came through in the post today. A good start towards the Edinburgh/ Glasgow DMU.

Before I get back into hacking coaches to produce that I thought I would start something simpler so I  have sourced a Bachmann FK which I plan to make into a LFK.

Will be interested in seeing progress

I started a 126 Unit a few years ago inspired by Signaller69s  Trix cut and shuts .  That didn't go well mainly because the Trix coaches i sourced had been glued to underframes . So I've sourced some more this time unglued and are intent on starting again using a Lima117 underframe . Meanwhile I got a full Silver Fox kit  and some additional cab ends , so in theory I could have 2  126s . Just lacking the ability to do it , so anything you post would be inspiring .

Yes it is quite daunting. I will give it a go though!

BIG SCALE MODELLING!

My thoughts have turned to the full size Highland coach again.

I have made some templates for features of the buffer beam.

These are,

1. The end profile of the buffer beam

2 & 3 The casting in which the drawhook sits

4 The drawhook

5The spacer the buffer is bolted to.

6 is the works plate

To give you an idea of size, the buffer spacer is just under 10inches in diameter
