Tim V
Coincidentally, I've just scanned this picture of Winchcombe from 2002, followed by the same place pre-preservation in 1980.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted January 4, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4, 2022 Thanks Tim, I had found similar photos of Winchcombe on line and they were very helpful. I've since added some lead flashing around the base of the chimney on the model, forgot to put it on prior to taking photos.

I see the preservationists didn't understand the function of the buildings they're preserving! Nice shin-banging guard rail. I'm pleased to see that this is an example where the bullhead rail is laid sideways - other examples I've seen it's vertical, which would make forming the bend much harder... (Got to make one for the club layout...)

(Got to make one for the club layout...) It's not too hard to bend rail in the vertical. This started off as a big ugly piece of Peco code 100, I filed it into bullhead before putting the short end in the vice and cold bending. I was expecting to have to heat it, but it's not necessary. It should be easier with a length of scale bullhead. Edited January 4, 2022 by MrWolf 5 2 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post Captain Kernow Posted February 6, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted February 6, 2022 Various tasks have been progressed in the last few weeks, all aiming towards getting the scenery on this board of the layout completed. I have finally painted the setts that I scribed about 10 years ago: The embankments at the Coalpit Heath end of the layout have been built, the retaining wall (also built several years ago) installed and a base layer of grass put on: The water tower isn't yet permanently fixed to the layout, although it will be in due course. The weighbridge plate has been painted and weathered, as have the setts surrounding it. This is the scene prior to the weighbridge hut being weathered (it is also still not finally fixed to the layout): The embankments up to the main road, past the back of the shunters cabin and stores buildings have also now had an initial grass layer applied. This is the scene this afternoon prior to the application of a second layer. All the masking off was necessary to ensure that the spray adhesive didn't go where it shouldn't: The paper and masking taped were removed after the glue had hardened off: 21 9

RMweb Gold JustinDean Posted February 7, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 7, 2022 I’m enjoying these images and your modelling here a lot, but particularly the stone setts in the first photo look fantastic. Jay 3

RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted June 9, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 9, 2022 I'm liking the way you bed in your buildings. There are too many examples of beautifully made buildings just plonked onto the ground cover leaving a gap and totally spoiling the whole effort. Regards Lez. 2 1

RMweb Gold Popular Post Captain Kernow Posted October 23, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 23, 2022 Not a lot has been happening with the layout itself for the last few months, but it has served as a photographic backdrop for some work I'm doing on Re6/6s mineral wagons - fettling, converting to P4 and weathering. A selection of unfitted minerals, part-way through the weathering process and waiting for removable coal loads: 'Quick and dirty' conversion of three Bachmann bauxite 16 tonners to P4. No fancy suspension or compensation here, simply fettling the brake gear and substituting new wheels plus tie bars and vacuum pipes: The three bauxite 16 tonners pose with 'Lord Salisbury' (awaiting nameplates). I will be weathering these in due course: Three Accurascale 21.5 tonners. These really are lovely wagons, the conversion of which is pretty straightforward, thanks to Accurascale providing wider brake gear assemblies for EM and P4. These three wagons will now be passed to Brinkly for weathering, as part of some DRAG bartering: 30
RMweb Gold Popular Post Captain Kernow Posted November 5, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted November 5, 2022 Well, the rumours in the engineman's mess room at Frog Lane Colliery, Coalpit Heath were proved correct, when a resplendent 'Mayshill', in immaculate condition from it's overhaul at Hunslets, was worked back to 'Callow Lane' this morning on a tripper from Westerleigh Yard, marshalled immediately behind the train engine, 47506. Keen--eyed observers will note that the nameplates were removed prior to the loco going off to Leeds. They are believed to be stored in the Foreman's office at the colliery. This is the new Kerr Stuart 'Victory' release from Planet Industrials and I am just so impressed by this model. It ran smoothly at very slow speed, straight out of the box and the finish on it is just excellent. The plan for this one is to convert it to P4, probably using Sharman wheels on the usual 1/8" axles, the bearings and worm drive on the loco being reamed out to accept this.

RMweb Premium Compound2632 Posted November 5, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 5, 2022 Looking at the photos, I'm of course impressed by the standard of this layout as of all your modelling, @Captain Kernow. My only niggle, as an out and out Midland nerd, is that I don't think I see anything that establishes it as a specifically Midland location - or am I missing something?
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted November 5, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 5, 2022 Well, there are more details to be added, such as signals and a Midland yard crane. The other scenic board will have more Midland details, including signal box.

Peter Kazmierczak
I don't know how I missed this thread. Excellent stuff, Tim! Would it be possible to re-post some of the earlier photos lost in the RMweb outage- in particular the location map - please? I walked along the trackbed of the line near Westerleigh North earlier this year. A really interesting area, still with railway usage to the oil terminal, including a MR milepost showing the miles from Derby.

Hi Peter, I've posted some photos and the location map, on the first page of the thread, but unfortunately I don't have time right now to go through the rest of the thread to reinstate the other photos. 1 1
