RMweb Gold Popular Post Captain Kernow Posted January 15, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 15, 2023 I've been working on the Mikes Models whitemetal kit for a Midland yard crane for Callow Lane recently. A real example was used in the small goods yard at Nailsworth and is well-illustrated in 'Gloucester Midland Lines, Part 2: South' by Neil Parkhouse (Lightmoor Press). Although most of the components are whitemetal, the main body of the jib had to be fashioned from a square section piece of balsa wood, on which the four corners are sanded flat to make an octagonal-shaped structure. I did take some photos during the construction of the main mechanism, but seem to have lost them in the process of transferring them from my phone to my desktop PC (they are there somewhere, but I just can't find them at the moment!). So here are some photos of the completed crane, prior to painting (the wooden jib was painted, sanded and then the gaps in the wood grain filled). In situ on the layout. The crane will be primed and then sprayed black or dark grey and then weathered. The (colour) photos in the Lightmoor book show the yard in it's last days and the area around the base of the crane are weedy and rather unkempt, which is the look I shall aim for on Callow Lane. 29
RMweb Gold 46444 Posted January 15, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 15, 2023 Very nice CK. It will set the scene nicely. Out of interest do you know if these kits are still available or is it a case of searching for a second hand one? Cheers, Mark

I'm not totally sure, to be honest, Mark. I ended up with two kits, one from a very kind person on RMWeb, I may have ordered the other one from a shop. If you are looking for one, do PM me! 1 1

RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted January 15, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 15, 2023 Cracking job on the crane, but, is the jib upright enough? I've just been looking at some North Eastern ones that are all but identical and they seem to all be at about 45 degrees as seen at Potto below. http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/p/potto/index5.shtml 1
MrWolf
The Mike's Models range is now supplied by Holt Model Railways, Swansea. https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-hmd-rev2&hl=en-GB&cs=0&sxsrf=AJOqlzXCyjNIQDQEGK9xXktIOx8kAFP8Zw:1673819915099&q=Holt+Model+Railways+%26+Scalextric&ludocid=4318795697204317837&gsas=1&client=ms-android-hmd-rev2&ibp=gwp;0,7&lsig=AB86z5XZ6d1w96EJbZHCmf7qDn_I&shem=lssle&kgs=62a8b815fa9455f7&shndl=-1&source=sh/x/kp/local/4 Looks like a phone call is the best bet. Somewhere I have a whitemetal corrugated waiting shelter similar to those on the Wye Valley line and I've only just realised that was a Mike's product.

If the crane was working, a steeper angle would seem to be called for, but it must be possible to lower the jib for maintenance etc. The angle on mine doesn't seem that much shallower than the one at Potto? 2

Morning Tim. I'm very much a fan of these little chaps. Could we consider them to be a "modern" Pannier perchance ? Rob. 4

Indeed 58143 had first received a G6 boiler in December 1923 but other 1142 Class members had received theirs up to several years earlier, so the quirkiness that appeals to you should be attributed to the Midland rather than the LMS.
