Certainly the same make, but it would depend on place and period. For example in the '70s Dagenham produced several Ford models.

And in which direction the train was running - certainly by the 1980s the Ford trains (Using Silcock branded cartics) ran loaded in both directions between Halewood and Dagenham. Halewood built Capri and Escort would travel south whilst  Fiesta and Cortina headed north.

You'd see a similar distributions of makes/models on trains heading to/from the ports.

Great to see the order books open for these, thanks Mike, Ben and team.

Can I ask - with the Silcock versions with roofs, are the roofs raisable (like the real thing) or even completely removable so that you can put cars on the top deck? Appreciate with the side screens, you won't see a lot of a car, but would be good to know.

Thanks :)

The roofs are not designed to be hinged like the prototype.  When we have some tooled samples we can assess how simple it may be to add cars.

Hi Ben, is there likely to be more than just an A and B pack? i.e. if wanting a rake of 12 should I go for more than one of either pack?

We haven't decided is the simple answer.  For all variations we need to reach a minimum order number dictated by the factory.  If we do that on pre-orders then we may add an additional number set or two, but if not we won't!

Like others I'm very impressed with the pricing on these and will be ordering some...the question is which ones!

Modelling the Solent area it transpires that I likely need at least the blue MAT ones for 90s Southampton Western Docks traffic, white STVA ones for late 90s/00s Southampton Eastern Docks traffic, and also perhaps the Silcox Express ones which, in a debranded and heavily weathered form, seemed to be in use with Freightliner into the 2000s, as seen here:

57011, Southampton Central, April 7th 2000

Older meets newer

Are we likely to see further releases such as the above in future?

To start the ball rolling put me down for C & D, (and E & F if that helps!).

By the looks of those photos they’re the two Silcock Express versions just heavily weathered. I’m afraid we’ve no plans to offer weathered versions at the moment.

Thanks Ben for the reply.

If ordering 2 packs of A and B each now, then would it be possible to change one of each to C and D if and when they became available?

Cheers, Richard.

Hi all,

The diagrams we have give the Cartic-4 length as 203'5" over buffers, or 62001.4mm, which scales to 813.7mm in 1:76.2.

The models are correct over buffers, but for modellers I suspect a more useful dimension is the distance over the faces of the coupler bars, because this allows you to calculate the minimum amount of space needed in a siding for a unit, and this dimension from the CAD is 823.5mm.

cheers

I’m undecided on whether to go for the Motorail or the MAT Transauto version. With my tiny layout I can only really justify one set and even that’s a bit of a stretch.

To help me decide, were the MAT ones used on services out of Linwood during the 70s?

edited to add.

To answer my own question, I’ve dug out ‘The Heyday of the Scottish Diesels’ by David Cross which has a nice photo of D7601 at Kilmarnock in July 1971 on a rake of Cartics. Cross referencing with Paul Bartlett’s photo site it is clear from the lettering on the side identifies them as Toleman’s Delivery Service Ltd wagons which Paul says were built to the same design and diagram as the MAT wagons.

I’ve been deliberating on which ones to go for too for a central Scotland layout. I’m not finding many images of car trains in Scotland but have seen images I think of MAT wagons in late 80s at  Millerhill and I think some Silcocks ones at Mossend. Realistically I am exercising rule 1 again I think but am curious about what car trains did run into central Scotland and when. Surely it would have made sense to bring cars north this way from the import docks in the south and or factories like Longbridge???

Thanks for the replies,

Just one more question how long will the early bird prices be on offer before going up?

Hi there,

Earlybird price ending June 13th.  If you’re anxious about missing out keep an eye on our website. Or better still, if you’re sure just pre-order now.  We’ve missed the occasional order if the website is overloaded with a surge in demand just before midnight on deadline day.

cheers

Both MAT and latterly Silcock ran to Bathgate via ECML in the 80s and then WCML in the 90s I believe.

Links to Flickr below as examples for a couple of the more obscure electric hauled. Credit to the photographers due.

Search for Bathgate Washwood Heath on Flickr for some more examples (mainly of diesel hauled via the ECML).

Cheers.

Been struggling with justification myself, I'm not sure these are applicable to Carlisle circa April 1974, most motorail shots show Mk1 car carriers. I know the Cartic-4's didn't last long on Motorail anyway.

I'm still pouring over WTT's and constructing a massive spreadsheet of possible services to investigate, so if anyone knows anything I'd love to hear it.

Regards

FYI Ben - your website shows the early bird price ending 13th June (on the news page for the announcement of the OO Gauge Cartic order book opening). Got my order in early just in case that's not right.

Would also back additional packs with different wagon numbers as per some others have requested. Appreciate that there's 2 x different numbers per version which is a good start 👍

Thanks!

At that time, I believe there was a train run from Coventry to Linwood on behalf of Rootes Group. Unusually, it was loaded in both directions, carrying Hillman Imps (and derivatives) southbound, and returning with Avengers and Hunters. There was also traffic in components and body pressings in both directions, carried in Rootes' 30' containers.
