Torbay Express
The VIX is a nice model, I am just a little disappointed that it doesn't quite have the same level of detail as a continental model of similar price, especially with Rapidos reputation for detail.... DB Van: Separate details..... Just much more finesse, compared to the much more coarse moulded detail on the VIX. The packaging is at another level too. 1

Yes, IMHO Rapido missed a trick by concentrating all their efforts on the undergubbins which you can't see in normal conditions but didn't spend a commensurate amount of time and effort on the bits you can, the lack of etched ventilator bits being one case in point. Shame really, it could be elevated from pretty good to being a winner otherwise. Mike. 1 1
HarryLamb2
Good afternoon, I have used the P4 wheelsets from Accurascale I ordered as replacement wheels for the Deltic and the forthcoming EE Type 3 as I couldn't find a use for them. I found they are very true and give the correct ride height as an unsprung model but I will use modified Maso' sprung irons for the pair I'm converting. As an aside, the P4 wheels that Accurascale supplied as replacements may have been of the incorrect diameter but the product was excellent being very true! Looking at the photos on Paul Bartlett's website there are very few showing open vents - perhaps open vents were more likely to be seen when in traffic rather than sitting in a siding? But even if they could have been modelled I suspect the consequences in terms of additional fragility and price would have been significant. I am not sure what issue there can be with the packaging - seems standard to me. Do you mean additional prototype info or a detailing pack? I am not sure what issue there can be with the packaging - seems standard to me. Do you mean additional prototype info or a detailing pack? Hi, I weren't really on about the vents being open, but more what looks to be much finer tooling, combined with the separately fitted door and vent furniture, vice the quite coarse moulding on the new VIX. General....... Detailed.... Bottoms up.... (pretty much on par, although the Exact one does have hole detail in the steps) Best things dont always come in small packages...... Packaging is not a major, just not a great admirer of the plastic trays which can get smashed in transit (even with Accurascale rolling stock I am not a fan of it, although their outer packaging is much thicker, than the flimsy VIX wagons box). Nothing is going anywhere with that foam, nevermind the thick cardboard outer! Just looks sturdier and better quality than the trays. The above is obviously my views based on comparison, but hopefully the photos above, illustrate my points. The VIX has some nice features and bits of detail, trainferry securing eyelets, spidering on the back of buffers etc., but overall the bodyside detail just looks too coarse. For saying that the manufacturer prides themselves on exquisite detail, it just doesn't seem to have happened in this case, with the bodysides. The price point is pretty similar too at standard prices, although I picked the DB wagon up in a sale. 1

You are comparing an H0 model with an 00 one. It doesn't look particularly coarse to me, or when compared with other recent and well regarded 00 models that I have. But maybe that is just what I am used to. And it does seem as if ExtraTrain have set out to go the extra mile in their particular market. 1

eastwestdivide
If anyone's interested in the numbering of these, I just dug out some old notes in answer to a query on another thread (https://www.rmweb.co.uk/topic/155329-br-exhibition-coaches/?do=findComment&comment=5195134), which I'll repeat here as it seems a useful spot: Quote John M Upton said: international number 21 70 214 0144- 3 but does anyone know what the proper BR number was please Unbelievably, from notes I made peering at wagon plates at Hoo Junction and elsewhere in the 1980s, I noted that actual wagon! 21 RIV 70 BR 214 0 144-3 was (G)B 787017. I think the G was on the cast wagon plate originally, but by then, the white paint picked out only from the B onwards, hence the (G) in brackets. From those notes, the UIC numbering and the BR numbers were in sequence within the two batches of vans (there was a gap in the (G)B-series numbering, first batch GB786873-GB787022 and second GB787098-GB787347 according to https://www.ltsv.com/w_ref_numbers_b1.php). The UIC numbering was changed at some point from 21 70 214 0 xxx-y to 21 70 238 0 xxx-y or 21 70 239 0 xxx-y. The last digit (y above) is a check digit, so the actual sequence number of each wagon is the xxx (the 144 in your example). I noted a few others: 214 0 000-7 = 786873 (first of the first batch) 239 0 008-? = 786881 (+8 from the start of each series - I didn't record the check digit) 214 0 047-? = 786920 238 0 058-? = 786931 238 0 059-? = 786932 ... and from the second batch 238 0 180-? = 787128 238 0 305-? = 787253 Quick bit of work with Excel and you could make a cross-reference for them all.

I would imagine the only chance of a full rake of these would be on a Dover to Hither Green working, not that I've ever seen a picture, as you say primarily used in rakes of various other nationalities ferry vans.
