Graham Farish Spring 2023 announcements

In N Scale the all-new Graham Farish Class 90 Electric Locomotive will now be available in Freightliner ‘Powerhaul’ livery, with or without SOUND FITTED, whilst the Class 08 Diesel Shunter is offered in the popular BR Green and BR Blue colour schemes using the newly upgraded model which also allows SOUND FITTED models to be offered alongside the standard versions.

 

The Graham Farish rolling stock range sees a major injection of wagons with new releases of the 14 Ton Tanks, 30 Ton Bogie Bolsters, Bogie Ballast Hoppers, 27 Ton Steel Tipplers and HKA Bogie Hopper Wagons all set for release this Spring. In each instance, multiple liveries will be available and, in most cases, offered with a choice of two running numbers per livery

I know there will be much moaning that there's no coaches, but the policy of releasing multiple liveries, and running numbers on each model bodes well for the future.

 

I wondered if the Sealion would end up being a collectors club release, but nice to see it on general release.  Might take the heat out of the second hand market, though that seems to have calmed from it's crazy highs!

The sealion hoppers are probably the highlight and will no doubt be very welcome. But, although admittedly skimming through the list, I didn't notice any all newly tooled rolling stock. Have I missed something?

Well that's a wasted half an hour of my time I won't be getting back...

 

Once again leading with the totally transparent "placebo" of further Scenecraft models at eye watering prices to try and deflect from the lack of much else and there being absolutely no new tool items in terms of rolling stock or locos. 

 

I had a lingering hope that 2023 just might be the year that the Farish brand got Bachmann's full attention, but based on this start I think that looks far from likely, and the final crumb of hope has now well and truly disappeared.

No.  Was there an expectation of newly tooled rollingstock?

 

I'm glad they are re-releasing large batches of existing tooling in various liveries.

This could only be more melodramatic if delivered from a fainting couch. 
 

Did you miss all the new releases last year? The 319, 08, 60, 03, 90…?

Maybe Roy is referring to the avalanche of coaches that people would like to see to go behind the 90 or any other locomotive they might have purchased.

 

Edit: but not me, I have too many, but not too many to part with any.

Happy to see the Freightliner 90, order in for one of those! 

Good to see some freight stock coming through. The National Power HKAs will go well with the Revolution / Dapol 59s and good to see the bogie ballast hoppers back.

Tempted by the practically goes anywhere blue 08, maybe even pick up the CLASP station for a future project.

 

Would have like a rake of Seacows but not at that price, trouble is I can't see them ever getting discounted significantly either.

The Walrus appeals to me.  Perhaps I’d exchange  the bogies for the plate type as those might be more typical. 
The Cambrian website says the Walrus was 16’’ shorter than the Sealion due to shorter end platforms. I think I can live with  a 2.5 mm discrepancy in N gauge.

Good to see Bachmann going in for more choice of wagon numbers at last.

We are all entitled to our perspectives and please do not be so patronising.

 

No I did not miss those models and indeed bought a sound fitted 08 and plus an 04 but what I have missed and remains missing is any effort to re-balance the available product range with some steam locos and coaches for them to pull even from existing tooling. The number of steam locos listed by comparison to diesels is truly pitiful and little effort appears to be made to address it in spite of a large tooling suite. As Bachmann are known to have this portfilio of tooling nobody else will touch the models....

 

The 319, 60 and 90 are fine models I am sure but of no interest to me, I was expressing a personal opinion based on my own (and many others') modelling interests.

Nice to see some re-runs of wagons - particularly the different running numbers (rather noticeable on the four-wheel tanks). The re-run on the National Power hoppers is nicely timed with the pending release of the Revolution class 59 - some welcome joined up thinking!

 

Fingers crossed for some TTA and TEA in the summer.

 

Personally, I'd hoped for a couple more class 90s (including Intercity Mainline), and more coaches (Mk2F in I/C Swallow & Virgin and Mk2a TSO in blue/grey and Mk2a BSO in Regional Railways to fill the gaps from the last round of Mk2a).

Maybe next time...

 

Is there any news of a release date for the Farish class 158 yet?

I was told Q3/Q4 this year at Warley.

 

Highly likely to be more liveries at launch than already announced would be my bet.

Thanks Tom - more liveries would be nice but I suspect they won't include my second choice of West Yorkshire PTE red and cream!

Sounds like you’re glad we’re all disappointed Grahame.
 

 I haven’t noticed many expectations for “all new” items on any N gauge fora.  What I have noticed is a perfectly legitimate wish that Farish do some new runs of items for which they have existing amortised tooling, especially carriages and wagons, so that we have something to pull behind our locos.  The tank wagons in this announcement are a good, but woefully unambitious, start.

I think in most cases it is 'hope' not expectation of new coaches.

 

Each quarterly announcement comes along and the same hopes are elicited, some basic Mk1 Seconds, some Mk2as, some Mk2F seconds, brakes etc.

 

Without Farish giving some indication that they appreciate the gap and are actively planning to address it then I can understand why some are exasperated by the announcements.  It's not like there is some business critical need to hide when they plan to produce coaches, there is no competitor about to snap up the gap and pour Mk1 and Mk2 coaches into N gauge.

 

If I was not in the envious position of having enough Mk1s I too would be moaning about it, I certainly wouldn't be tempted to start in N gauge unless modelling the very current scene and able to scoop up Pendolinos, IEPs, TPE sets and 221s.

Not so, but I made it clear, having exchanged emails with Bachmann, that all new items were unlikely to be announced until the mid year (summer and autumn) announcements. So expectations for the spring announcement would likely be light (nothing all new, no coach reruns, etc) although the number of wagon reruns is encouraging.

 

And yes, there has been quite an expectation for new items even if you haven't seen it. In the last 24 hours, on another RMweb thread, Woodenhead wish listed "a first generation DMU that is not a 101 or 108" and Roy LS said "I would love something steam that is brand spanking new". And I'd certainly like to see their EPB shrunk down to N gauge. There have been others of course.

They did give that indication (at last year's DEMU showcase) and mentioned that coaches would be rerun. Just that it probably wouldn't be untill mid 2023. Hold your nerve, I'm sure they will eventually appear.
