The Scarborough Flyer for me.  Always liked the name as slightly anachronistic and clever, given it was probably marketed more to Joe Public than other trains, so wasn't an "express".

The Atlantic Coast Express for me as its one of the two named trains I've been on. The other was The Northumbrian but that was behind a Class 40. The ACE was behind 35028 in April 1964.

A really horrible morning. I shall not be playing golf, but I do need the light on to see the keyboard.

 

At PN, it is time for the Northumbrian to come through. Diesel hauled today, so no headboard to advertise its presence.

 

 

 

The morning plonk shows the palatial main entrance to the station that greeted passengers.

 

 

Now, what am I going to do this morning?  I can always count the poll.

Lots of single votes in the poll,but the winner, with 3, was the Atlantic Coast express, beating the Flying Scotsman and Silver Jubilee with two.

 

Nationalisation saw a proliferation of named trains. Some were good, others were not, so today we look for the best and worst post war Titled train names.

Worst - Anglo-Scottish Car Carrier (it does what it says on the tin, but...)

Another vote for that combination. But if it has to be a British post-war title I am partial to the "Cornish Riveria Express"

I always thought the Merchant Venturer had a nice ring to it.

Best : The Cornish Riviera . In the age before package holidays it conjured up wonderful mental images of a an adventure travelling to a far off place. Everything train travel should be ( or at least should have been in the days before the world went mad )

 

Worst : Practically everything the unimaginative London Midland Region dreamed up. The Condor, The Palatine, Comet, ,The Waverley, etc, all lacking charisma and instantly forgettable.

The rain gets harder, and the temperature drops lower. I am rather glad I didn't go golfing, though I suspect the greens will be flooded by now even if I had. The good news is that I have got Windoze photo gallery looking almost like I want it to again, and that your tea break photo is another view from Spital Bridge. D201 is approaching with the Northumbrian.

A very wet journey to Melton Mowbray, watching idiots charging around at high speed in standing water and blinding spray. Came back the slow safe way, passing the site of Scalford station, as usual a considerable distance from the village it served. I'll do a bit of reading up shortly to remind myself of the route and its history. First though the tea time photo, once again of modernisation, in the form of D201.

The bestest named was was the Essex Enterprise, wot a wonderful name for a freight train.

 

The most 'orrid The Lea Valley Enterprise.

The Up Fair Maid now, but Gateshead has rostered a not at all fair A3. Gladiateur wasn't a maid, either, as he won the Derby.

 

 

 

Your evening plonk features a bloke looking at closed doors.

 

 

You can't see from here, but he has both hands full, so perhaps he is wondering how he is going to open them.
