RMweb Premium great northern Posted May 20, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 20, 2013 Having rediscovered an unwanted and soul destroying talent for hitting golf balls at right angles to the intended direction I have realised that it is probably a good idea to do something else for a change, so I've had another look at the cassettes. Easy enough to attach velcro as suggested by our ever helpful duck, but unfortunately the backing would not stick properly to MDF. Application of super glue seems to have solved the problem though, and I finished up with this. It wouldn't win any prizes for aesthetic appearance, but it doesn't need to. A somewhat out of focus, (camera hand held) shot of the unit from above. I've bought some cheap foam stuff and glued a bit to each end to stop stock hitting something hard if and when the cassette gets tilted. The attachment of the block of foam at the "open" end has made me wonder whether that alone would suffice to hold the stock in place. It is after all similar to Jonathan's suggestion of scouring pads, and I suspect somewhat cheaper. It will only be an interference fit though, so I'm not at all sure if it will be strong enough, and I don't want to find out the expensive way, so I'll try to find a couple of stock items that are expendable and see what happens. Overall though I'm very happy with it. It works well, and even my first and slightly non square effort doesn't derail the stock, so now I can start to fill the rest up, and knock up a storage rack for them. This really will add to the flexibility of operation, and eventually more variety in the trains.
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted May 20, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 20, 2013 Appreciate the mention G. Anyhow, your cassettes look good, however I am worried that they resemble my 'fine-scale' buildings during construction although you are using thinner and lightweight materials. Quick. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 20, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 20, 2013 Here are a few more shots of early afternoon happenings at PN. Every now and then I finish up not being very happy with my efforts, and that applies to this lot, but having spent time messing around with them I might as well post them. We start with a Gateshead A3 which has come along the engine road, and is about to cross over to the Down side to await the arrival of the Northumbrian, which it will take over from a Top Shed loco, which will no doubt have been cleaned much more recently than this one. Could well be a cop for some of the spotters though. It isn't quite time for the Northumbrian yet though. A Doncaster A3 lurches through the South end dog leg curve with a Buffet car semi fast for its home town. Doncaster weren't much better than Gateshead at keeping locos clean I'm afraid. Patiently waiting time in number 1 bay is a Spital Bridge D16, which will eventually make the one mile trip down to East station. I've recently discovered that even this humble shuttle service had corridor stock, so alterations will have to be made. In fact it seems that apart from one or two locals to and from E.Anglia, non corridor stock was hardly to be seen at North at all. Finally we see the Doncaster A3 - Diamond Jubilee recently fitted with double chimney - about to pull up and take up passengers..

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 22, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 22, 2013 Today saw another visit by Peter Leyland, and resulted in my thinking it was Sunday, as that is when he usually comes. Anyway, whatever day of the week it is, and I'm finding increasing difficulty knowing that, it was time well spent. I've said before that sometimes a whole day of work can result in no discernable difference, whereas on other occasions what doesn't look like much can have a big impact. Today fell into the latter category. I have been asking Peter, not nagging, I would never do that, to finish off the wall at the North end of the Up platform. It's a job that has to be done on site, and it has been put off as we thought it would take up a lot of time with little to show for it. Happily that turned out to be wrong. as these shots demonstrate. First with the overall roof off. And with me not having noticed that the old engine shed was missing. A closer view with the shed back where it belongs. And another slightly different view. Please note that this platform, like number 6, had a drinking fountain. Last one with the roof back in place. I'm really pleased with this, as it seems to tie everything together. It's also the last piece of the main station to go in, so now we just need to fill in gaps, finish off the platform surfaces and add a bit more weathering. Another bonus today was that while Peter was working on this I carried on with the cassettes, and discovered that if I use pieces of foam which are a tight interference fit at each end so that the stock cannot move, it is not necessary to go the velcro and MDF route. So I now have nine full cassettes, and still another six to deal with. This really is going to make a huge difference to flexibility and ease of operation - another of those fortunate and all too rare occasions where the benefits are out of all proportion to the time involved.
coachmann
This layout really is something with Peter's fine buildings everywhere. Unless he has built himself a new layout recently, Peterborough is at the opposite end of the spectrum from Peters modest L&Y brachline terminus. James
Sorry James. York isn't that far South of Tyneside though, is it? To my London based friends the 'norf' is anywhere north of Watford so to them at least, Yorkshire and Tyneside are very, very close!

coachmann
Most places are very close together according to Parkers. Type in your postcode when looking for a used car and it'll be only a stones throw away from your home 'cos distances appear to be measured as the crow flies... RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 24, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 24, 2013 A couple of shots of the near complete North end with trains seemed like a good idea. The Northumbrian was due, and is pictured as the loco emerges from under the roof and slows to stop at the platform end. The sky was carefully chosen to mimic what is going on outside here today, though I've seen very little of that funny blue stuff on the right hand side. Fortunately the 50+mph gusts of wind can't be recreated either. Watching trees in full leaf thrashing about like this is a bit unnerving - it must be getting close to bringing some seriously large branches down, but not on my garden fence please. Oh, and it was 8 degrees C at lunchtime. Even Gordon S surely wouldn't want to play golf in this. By happy coincidence the next Up service was the 1230 Hull- KX, with Deltic in charge. Those birds are back! Costs a fortune to keep cleaning the roofs you know. The happy coincidence is that the A4 is Silver Link, the first of the most successful and iconic class of steam locomotive to grace the ECML, and it was immediately followed by the prototype and precursor of its equally iconic successor. Half a century of history in just a few minutes.
gordon s
Been lurking on this thread since my chosen sabbatical and the buildings and stock really do look good. I'm very pleased for you Gilbert and it's light years ahead of your earlier layout. Oh, and not quite golf, but an hour on Trackman with our pro, mapping out every club. I now have a ton of data to analyse and work out the best way forward. Yes, it was windy and for most of the time quite wet. At least were in a covered bay....
