Popular Post Erichill16
Good evening everyone, Congratulations to Douglas and hope the grades take him far. Sorry to hear about Chrisf’s ‘predicament’ perhaps I shouldn’t have opened my big mouth but I do hope you go and get it looked at, enough said on that matter. Been hot here today but did get the floors mopped and a bit other work done. Afternoon spent socialising with a friend and his family then tea and more socialising with Bil and family and then a visit to Mils. No time for any modelling but kept busy on here. RMweb Gold Popular Post tetsudofan Posted June 24, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 24, 2020 Evening all, been hot and sunny down here in the south east corner. Have got a slot at the local Tip tomorrow so had to cut the grass (what little of it) and sort out the other garden waste to load into the car first thing tomorrow morning. Temperature in the bedroom is 29c (the joys of living in a chalet bungalow) so aircon just fired up for the first time this year, temperature gradually being lowered to 20c-22c resulting in a good nights sleep. Which reminds me, its time to say goodnight. Keith 14 4

RMweb Premium Popular Post newbryford Posted June 24, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 24, 2020 Finally got a refund for the car hire after about 30 minutes "live online chat" that consisted of 6 messages. The offer of voucher plus 10% for 2 years was not taken. Yet they say that the refund could take up to 30 days - whilst still trying to push the voucher to put me off, the nice lady at Amtrak said 5 days maximum, no questions asked. Score with 89 minutes played. Amtrak 1, Car booking agent 0. Extra time is not looking good for the car rental company. Next up will be Delta. I checked my reservation and it already says "cancelled, no alternate available, please change flight details for e-credit". [*] They have not yet notified us of the cancellation. I wonder if they will do so before the 14 days preceding travel? If it's within 14 days of the travel date (they still have over 1 month to play with) , then Regulation EC261/2004 starts to kick in which ramps up the return level from straight refund to other values. I know this sounds a bit mercenary, but it's their lack of communication that is the driving factor. (The fact that Delta share the same bed sheets as Sir Richard Branson has no bearing on my course of action - honest) [*] According to the regulation, you must be presented with a choice between a re-routing or a refund. e-credit is not a viable option at this stage as I'm not sure when we would have occasion to use Delta again. Half time score. NB1, Delta 0 It's still quite warm in the supposedly cooler areas of NB Towers. A sweaty night beckons (ooh-errr Missus!) Thursday beckons - have a good one folks. ` 20

RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted June 24, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 24, 2020 Ah, the leaving of school - we had nothing official apart from the usual prize which came after the summer holidays/. But I did get something out of because i was in the advance party for CCF summer camp so the last time I left the school premises was actually in one of HM's 3 ton trucks sitting, along with others, in the back on part of our stores and camp kit and we did manage about 30 miles before we halted at a pub (a traditional stop on that route to our Mid Wales camp site). We duly set up the camp after some of the party went off to unload the a large quantity of other necessary items which were sent by rail from the depot at Brecon to Machynlleth. Being advance party we were able to make ourselves very comfortable once we'd got the camp set up and duly grabbed things like camp beds and extra bedding for ourselves. My school life ended as part of the rear guard dismantling the camp and I spent most of one day in Machynlleth goods yard reloading the stuff into vanfits to return to Brecon - I got that job because I was most interested in the adjacent loco shed than taking down tents and loading the lorry while listening to the England winning the World Cup. The next day we struck the final couple of tents and back to the school, via another pub stop, to unload all the stuff into our own stores. And that was my farewell to school life. 22
RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted June 24, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 24, 2020 (edited) Good evening everyone Well it’s been a n absolutely glorious day here in the northwest of England, it’s been so sunny I’ve not needed to use any artificial lighting at all today. The vast majority of the day has been spent in the workshop. I’ve removed all the old limit switches and associated wiring, but this meant completely dismantling the turntable. But before I did, I marked where everything went first, just to speed up the alignment later. I then reassembled the lower part, leaving just the well and bridge to refit later. I then made and fitted the bridge wiring, using a flying lead onto which I’ve fitted a plug, making removal, if required, a little easier. After dinner I decided to give the work a clean, as there was quite a bit of sawdust and filings from recent work. I then cleaned down both of the workbenches which also had quite a bit of debris on them. The ultrasonic cleaner was tackled next, as the bottom was looking decidedly murky, so I emptied and cleaned this. Finally I swept the floor, which had gotten quite mucky due to the need to take refuge a the occasion of sudden downpours. The floor really needs mopping, but it was far too warm for that today, plus I couldn’t be bothered, I’ll do that another day. Below is a photo of the arbour and bench, which I used this evening to sit and have a drink after tea. The view from the arbour, this area used to be a sand pit when the kids were small. Finally a shot of the shady garden, which leads to the cellar, there used to be a shed there many years ago and when the kids were small, this area was gated so they didn’t fall down the stone steps, which are quite steep. Ah, graduation ceremonies.....or not in my case, as a company cadet (about to be a junior officer of course by then) I was on a ship earning them a crust about five minutes after sitting my finals! A good result was declared and delivered by post, eventually. Further education later in life didn't have the same feel, and was very low key. This ship, as it happens - LPG tanker. RMweb Premium BR60103 Posted June 25, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 25, 2020 My school recollections, from about 60 years ago. Numbering like US K,1-8,9-13. K-8 was called Public School, 9-13 was High School or Collegiate. There was also "Separate" School which was (is) Catholic. We didn't know why, but we knew the Catholics weren't allowed in our schools. You could start Kindergarten the year you turned 5. As my birthday is just before Christmas, I was probably the youngest in my class. I finished Grade 13 at age 17. We called our years "Grade 8" rather than "Eighth grade". When my father was in school the high school years were referred to as forms. There was no ceremony for leaving public school. Teacher read the names of those who'd passed, made remarks about the top few. In high school there was a ceremony called Commencement in the fall. This was time of giving diplomas and awards. I don't remember a dance, but there were a few house parties. Grade 12 was graduation. Grade 13 was Honours graduation. 13 was supposed to be like a university preparatory year. The exams at the end were set by the provincial department of education, so called "Departmentals". These were marked anonymously by a central group of teachers during the summer to ensure a level standard based of a set course for each subject. Some years after that marking was done in the schools, then about 15 years ago Grade 13 was abolished. (That year university entrance was a "double cohort" as 2 years came in at once.) We didn't really have an end of school. It ended after your last exam and everyone might have a different last exam. I have a pile of booklets with the departmental exam papers for 20 or 30 years before 1964. 18
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted June 25, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 25, 2020 Similarly, at my school it was finish your last exam and wander out of the gate, thinking, well, what next. With the no hopers leaving up to two months earlier, taking no Scottish Certificate of Education Ordinary level exams, through to those a year older like me taking SCE Higher Level exams, right through to the end, numbers of classmates and those from other exam taking classes, just slowly faded away. Leaving school was just an anticlimax.. I seem to remember my first exams being Maths and the last being history.. Mooring Awl inner Temple Hare, A great difficulty was had getting to sleep, 25C in the bedroom, not helped by having limited comfortable positions due to my shoulder. Eventually I did get to sleep lying on the bed and not in it, and about 6 hours was had. Ben the I hate noises collie originally came up and laid down on the floor at the foot of the bed, but with bird scarers still going off in the fields being louder than normal due to windows being open, he left when they went off again, back down to his safety cage. Hmm it's just come up with Hermes has my parcel,, which is unusual here, as its normally the house of strong ladies own deliverers. This is sanding papers for the detail sander I bought yesterday, just the cheapest one at £20 but it comes with a 2 year guarantee. Sanding papers at the orange shed £9 for 5 ,at the big river 72 for £15. No competition.. I was going to relax a bit more before getting up, but I'm hungry... Time to head for the kitchen.. 13 1
