I was idly watching the Science Channel tonight: “Outrageous Acts of Science” and was startled wide awake by the #1 act featuring an old pal of mine, Jerry Miculek who I haven’t seen for years....

The so-called outrageous act was Jerry bursting a regular toy balloon attached to a target from one kilometer away. Now if he used a specialist sniper rifle it would have been good BUT he used a 9mm Para Revolver. A Smith & Wesson model 929 which is his “signature”. Probably one of the most outstanding feats of marksmanship ever filmed.

Jerry’s a natural shot.

The last time I saw him was at a S&W demonstration in Greensboro. The dink from S&W was blowing hard by saying that Jerry had shot against members of the 22nd SAS in Hereford and wiped the floor with them in terms of speed using a revolver compared to their automatic pistols. It was at that point that he winked at me and later apologized for the crass behavior of his colleague.

It’s true that Jerry is probably not only the most accurate but also the fastest (particulately in reloading the weapon) with a revolver in the World today. It’s not bad considering he is probably the same age as the average “Early Riser”.

Anyway it was good to see him again albeit on TV.

Best, Pete.

Took him two shots though .    :jester:

.....I'm sure that Renee in 'Allo Allo' was involved in this sketch, with the tasty waitress....we could always have a whipround and 'come to an arrangement'.

Dave

Ah, yes, so Francois's wife Isabelle would be Mrs Renee (aka "You stupid woman!" and played by actress Carmen Silvera, who once presented drama prizes at my skool) but I have no evidence of Alison being interested in older, Renee-style men, thus ruling out most of the male ER population. As for whips.....

Two. How many would it have taken you?

One of the most mean-spirited articles written, the one you quoted. Could anyone do it? No.

Best, Pete.

Going by my few attempts at shooting, standing anywhere near the target even if it were close would be perfectly safe.

Morning all,

Somewhat later rising today after yesterday's efforts but no proper job breakfast as I had that yesterday evening!

Now to todays's mystery question from the south west.  As far as I can trace there never was a halt between Teignmouth and Newton Abbot - the residents of Shaldon petitioned for one at to be provided at Shaldon Bridge but it never was was and equally attempts to get one (much earlier at Bishopsteignton also came to naught although it is just possible that in early SDR days trains did drop off passengers for the archery club in the vicinity of Bishopsteignton although I seriously doubt it was ever shown in the timetable (and delving one out to check is too much of a task at this time of day to be honest - ploughing through an 1850s timetable is not the simplest of tasks).  There was also talk of a siding at Bishopsteignton but all it actually got was a signalbox.

Now to brighter things - the rain has yet to start but is promised which means attendance to the garden weeds might have to be deferred.

Have a  good day one & all

I heard back in the 70's that there was a halt but of course I never took much notice. Travelling yesterday I saw some overgrown structure close to the track on the 'up'. It seemed closer to Newton than Bishopsteignton, quite hard to position exactly. Next time I will look for the mile posts and check the 'down'.

Morning all. Off for a catch-up though recent ER history. Should be done by lunchtime (on Tuesday)...

Gloriously proper hot here yesterday. Holiday Costa-type weather. Sitting in the middle of the long grass on a folding chair from Wilkinson with a cheap supermarket beer yesterday afternoon was a pleasant diversion. Cooler today with the promise of more hotness during the week.

Hope the tail-end of your weekend is a good one.

Edit: I note from the Vulcan link that it will turn left at Norwich and head towards Kings Lynn this afternoon. Close, but not close enough sadly.

There's a number of videos of its progress yesterday on the northern leg of its tour:

 - this one is a bit shaky; must be windy oop top of hill!

  over Doncaster. Quite a display!

Just back from the Wimbledon, Croydon and Carshalton mini-expo in Carshalton. And great fun it was. Very few members of the public, plenty of time to look and chat. A pleasant couple of hours and not a backpack in sight. It's open until 5 if you're in the area (face painting £2).

Just back from Sandy's Race for Life.

Fair tipped it down on the drive down to Stoneleigh, but was fortunately spits and spots by the time we parked. Sandy's waterproofs were duly loaded into my rucksack, and the brolly remained furled.

We have a pic of her posing with her bottle of gin and tonic, or should that be isotonic? Under 50 minutes for 5k and her knee's now making its presence felt, as are the ankles and hips. We're above two hundred and fifty quid raised so far.

This afternoon I will be mostly making comforting noises, or just keeping out of the way, whichever seems more prudent at the time.

Well done that girl - a fantastic effort!! Only hope she hasn't hurt herself too much with the effort. If she lived nearby, I'd certainly pour her a nice long G&T with all the trimmings. With this sort of support, they will beat cancer one day!

Kind regards,

Jock.

Stoneleigh, as in Abbey?

SWMBO did her 5k there yesterday. :)

My mum used to bake cakes and prepare meals from scratch, like most housewives in the 50's/60's. She never ever measured anything, the nearest to measuring anything was probably x number of eggs, she never even had a set of scales.

My now late mother always said she followed recipes for such things as Christmas puddings but she maintained the recipes were wrong. She would carefully measure out the ingredients and then if there was a small amount left  in the packet, in it went. The same with the addition of brandy etc, she would say "Oh that's not enough". That from a woman who only really drank the likes of Jubilee stout. She gave up the ritual of Christmas pudding making in her late 80's but not before she had fully trained my wife to take over! I'm glad to report she is now carrying on a fine tradition in exactly the same way.

Sunshine, just the occasional light shower and pretty windy here, so I was able to finish cutting the grass later in the morning. More gardening on the agenda this afternoon.

While waiting for the grass to try this morning, I stitched nine photos together to create the panorama that will sit behind Worseter. Malverns to the left, Worcester off to the right.

For Vulcan fans check out this link: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zJoGZd3-Qg5U.kr6xxU1U7Acg for today's flight route across the midlands and eastern counties.

For people who thought I was alluding to Star Trek, click here

Yes, and yesterday it was meant to pass right over my house according to the published track online, but when I tracked it on Fightradar 24 it showed the same, but very slightly West, but when I went out to my garden at the alloted time, it was about eight miles West, and the only evidence of its passing was the noise as it went over Morecambe at about 5500 feet at 300 knots.  DOH.

Afternoon All

Rainy this morning, but has turned a bit drier this PM and I have had numerous domestic jobs including my all time favourite, changing the toilet seat, then struggling to get the one size fits all (but really that means one size doesn't quite fit any) seat to sit square, tight, and with the lid able to be lifted and to stay up.

I have caught up, and as usual offer my generic greetings.

Don't know if anybody's interested, but this is one of the biggest gatherings of Sussex Spaniels in the UK at Parham - the fact that there's only 27 says a lot about the breed numbers.  A couple of years back, a lot of the SSA members made a special effort, and about 65 turned up, which was deemed to be totally amazing.

Regards to All

Stewart

There's a number of videos of its progress yesterday on the northern leg of its tour:

There was an air show at Prestwick around 1978 (?) when we lived there. The last video reminds me of a Vulcan doing a low-level pass right over the top of our house while I examined the inside of the bomb bay. (It might have been a Victor - IIRC there was a Victor and a Vulcan at that show.)

Morning all,

Liking the photos, Neil. The idea of sitting there having a pint whilst the trams go by....may have to add that railway to my bucket list.

snipped<

As it happens the chap I was having a pint with in the photo (taken last summer on a break between retirement and starting with trackshack) with his back to you is a good friend, who is the new General Manager of the Welshpool & Llanfair!  He's a Canadian, his wife is Manx.  Nice bloke, incredibly clever.  Nothing better than having a train journey with friends and having a decent pint with lunch.
