Simon, I have a little trouble visualising how the assembly works. Any chance on showing what the complete unit looks like and explain how it's mounted inside the reservoir? (like, what's the water inlet, where does it flow out, etc) TIA!

This is the sort I have replaced our bottom fed cistern valves with.

For a little extra there is a version with brass threaded bits

I'm all For bringing back military rank on retirement........

The Hon. BlackRat L/Cpl R.M. Retd

I recall my father saying that L/Cpl was the best rank in the army. Not totally sure why!

One of my brother in law's cousins was a junior school head teacher in Colchester. A lot of the children in the school were from army families. He was quite amused that he was treated as if he was equivalent to a colonel for some sort of status thing. He thought not bad for a child who had come to England on the Kindertransport and had socialist leanings!

When I worked at our force training school quite a few of the instructors had got OU degrees and insisted on putting the framed certificates up in their offices. One of the Det Insp's sussed it and put up his framed cycling proficiency certificate.

Morning all, but not a good one so far. The fill valve on a toilet in the house packed up last week for some reason that I couldn’t work out, despite taking it apart. Solution was to buy a new one, but I couldn’t find a suitable one in town, so bought one off Amazon. It arrived speedily so today I set out to fit it. Turns out that it’s screw thread for the water inlet is half an inch shorter than the current one, so without major pipe work or wall surgery, it won’t fit. Return to Amazon required.

Just in case there are any plumbing experts on here, I have a photo of the disassembled old one, to see if anyone can shed any light on why it doesn’t work. When I reassemble it, it works for a few seconds, then the water flow just stops. There isn’t a filter to block, but I can’t see what the tiny white bit is for on the black gasket. The central white bit is obvious as the plunger pin, but the other bit baffles me. It moves within the black gasket, but doesn’t seem to want to come out. Any ideas gratefully received!

Hi Simon I'm not sure on this one I only ever fitted complete bogs have a look on the Screwfix site you might find what you want open an account if needed it's always handy,

you can check the float arm operation and that black gasket is in the correct way round, it's pity you live 250 miles or I could have popped round.

This photo should help clarify how the toilet cistern is set up. It uses a small float, as the cistern is just too small for a normal sized ball valve. Thanks!

One of the professors in the geography department at the University of Sheffield back in the 70s didn't bother to display his certificates, but used to cut out any letters he'd managed to get printed in the Guardian and blutak them on the outside of his office door.

That design of valve is the same type that I had bought from Amazon, but the thread was too short. There is a Screwfix in Workington so I might go and see if that one has the correct thread length for me. Thanks for that!

Did my first bit of loco modding in what seems like forever, tweaking 189 107 with some additional details:

Working on body and chassis separately makes things easier. Aside from that, I needed to unclip the cab interiors anyway.

Bogie 2 needed Integra-Signum magnets for Switzerland installed on the inner end. Of course, with Switzerland now having converted its entire SG network to ETCS balises (with a small number of exceptions), I suppose locomotives with Integra gear will slowly have it removed during the next couple of years.

The magnets were to be glued to the outside of the bogie frame next to the sand tubes.

The head of Pantograph 2 needed reshaping to match the outline of the RFI standard DC head for Italy.

Following a suggestion on a German forum, I adapted a pair of Integra magnets taken from an ACME TRAXX parts bag. They are generally included there whether needed for the specific loco or not.

A droplet of CA suffices for attachment.

Sun blinds were fitted in both cabs before reassembly and a few details such as sand filler caps and PZB magnets highlighted, too.

The following photo is shewn as a section 6 sub clause b exemption to her Debshipness's Primary statute 1 (2nd amendment).

The text is a sub clause c exemption.

It shows the fiddle yard end of Splott West Sidings, my Cardiff based shunting plank.

It was displayed at the Church Stretton MRC show yesterday as a 'work in progress' this condition being specifically requested by the show organisers.

This was because:

It enables visitors to see how model railways are constructed (my interpretation)

How not to do it (organisers interpretation).

The intelligentsia will note the profusion of ex NE style brake vans as opposed to the more normal ex GW  (proper)Toads.  There is a 16 ton AA3 at the far end of the board, the rest are still sitting on the workbench.

During my early NHS days we had a colleague who always completed his signing with  DDLM.  Not to show ignorance senior management did not ask him what qualification these initials meant ... yes, you've got it Dan Dan (the) Lavatory Man!.  It paid off for him.

Well I did manage the exulted rank of Sergeant in the school CCF but never had time to put up the stripes before leaving as I was promoted right at the end of my final year while at annual camp.  It was probably a ruse to deal with my Corporal's stripes which - unlike anybody else in the CCF - happened to be correct Light Infantry stripes to match our cap badge.  Everyone else had stripes recycled through the CCF stores but mine had emerged via the back door of the local drill hall which happened to be the same Regt as the one we were officially affiliated to (Ox & Bucks LI - now thoroughly subsumed into some part of 'The Rifles').

Afternoon Awl, inner Temple Here,

That is Cpl was doing a Sgts job unpaid, unranked for my last 3 years, as they got rid of acting ranks just before I got the job, saying people would be promoted on time, which of course didn't happen and I was medically downgraded but fully capable of doing my job..

I do know my number of course but won't use it here, as I use it for other things. It's a letter and 7 digits.

So when I left it was K********, CPL, L Tech AD, BA, Rtd. But I have 5 years till I can finish working.

It noticeable when we see photos of American fellow employees, over there they often seem to have their Certificates plastered on their cubicles.

Today's planned work went well, but was not finished, as my back said I was not bending down anymore.

After returning to the house for a sarni, coffee and Ibuprofen, I took Ben the Border Collie out on my own as SWMBO is still suffering from a cold. I took the long route by the marshes, many of the fields down there are doing their best to return to marsh. Although, the pumps have done their stuff and the water levels in the dykes are low...

Time to.... go have a long soak in a bath....

Perhaps it's better that H0 models aren't distributed that way, else I suppose empty space might begin to get scarce here! :jester:
