Bachmann announcements - 2011

Duke Duke Duke Duke of Earl........

Enough R&B (ok it was Chicago R&B not Motown)

I am rescued at last on the Class N, although it will go immediately to the paint shop to remove the vestiges of Fabian socialism. I have been repeatedly loosing E-Bay and Vectis bids on old N Class models. The SECR Class C may find a home subbing for a LSWR Black motor.

I too have just obtained a pair of Cambrian 25 Ton Brake Vans....At least I hope Chivers proposed LSWR outside braced vans are not likely to show up in the RTR.

And yes the Dukedog shall grace my piddling Padstow occasionally. Most of my wallet is going to Kernow anyway for BTW's and O2's.

I was dismal after the Hornby announcement. But this is a delight. (Sorry about that for all my distant relations who live in Lincolnshire.)

Doubt if the price makes much difference to a serious modeller.

Sorry Mick, couldn't hear you there at the back amongst the other serious modellers?

They will look for the best looking model and willingly pay the difference, I know I would .

Good for you for having the money to do so! That £20 difference means something more to me, frankly.

On the B1 for example you can expect a whole new tooling etc etc £20 difference !! No competition!! , most will buy the best model , which you presume will be the Hornby version at the present time. The Bachmann version loco body is good , cant say I would say the same for the tender with moulded coal, poor detail etc.

It's called modelling Mick - I've seen quite a few Bachmann B1 tenders cut about to make them look better. In one case, a whole different type of tender entirely.

With shop discounting and e bay etc the difference maybe even smaller time will tell.

Quite, and you can expect the Bachmann B1 to also see its price discounted at the box shifters too.

I can't afford the top of the range RTR at the moment, lack of income being the deciding factor on my part.

I don't know which I find more amusing - being told I'm not a modeller for buying RTR in the first place, to then be told I'm not a serious modeller anyway for not affording the most expensive RTR

Shiva has many hands which means lots of fingers... the issue about duplication is not about who's first - it's about the fact it exists and deflects from other projects - finger-pointing about who is to blame or who holds a righteous position is ridiculous because it leads nowhere - there are few other duplication examples that have built up over time : 9Fs, 57xxs culminating in the latest crap which is the Tornado (to name two or three), now crowned by B1.

But surely the simple fact at the end of the duplication issue is that these people make things which they hope will sell and which their accountants can be assured will sell in sufficient quantities to justify the up-front investment? In the case of Hornby going for a B1 this must have been very much the case as Bachmann had (long) said they intended to upgrade the chassis of their own. Someone, or a committee, at Hornby made a deliberate decision to produce a B1 and to duplicate - albeit in a rather clever way - 'Tornado' and I don't think they did that because they are idiots or hate have it in for people who model the north east of England; they did it in order to make a profit by identifying things which they believe will sell in sufficient volume to produce the best return on their investment.

Obviously these companies won't stay in business if the don't deliver what the market wants and (as I suspect Hornby might shortly find out) at a price the market will accept. I think that this year Bachmann have got a lot of their marketing much more carefully thought out than Hornby and some of it is very cleverly done particularly with the Bluebell Railway theme which also lets them get a couple of fairly desirable locos into the market place while exploiting production techniques they have proved on commissioned models; if that isn't good business sense I don't know what isblink.gif

Maybe an equally crafted bit of marketing could produce a J25 - ideal for some iconic routes (possibly even putting Stainmore on a par with the S&D JtR) or bringing Rothbury to the fore and they ran on the GWR as well (not my period tho'). The message is simple - in present circumstances they have got to come up with things which will produce a good return on the investment, preferably as near guaranteed as could be.

I know this is from a few pages ago but...

C class in SECR (And I dare say next year this may lead to an 01, as, to my eye anyway, they are quite similar in design and would just need some tweaks to become so.)

Whilst that would be perfect, I very much doubt it. They aren't that similar! I can't believe my luck that they are making an SECR engine - I don't think they would make 2 in as many years...

Earl Class, albeit I am surprised they didn't choose to do 9017 in it's GWR livery....

It is currently in BR black. It has its uses as a Cambrian favourite too in this livery. Essentially, I'm not suprised. Shame the only GWR version is DCC fitted though (from my point of view, as I can't afford the switch!)

I can't believe my luck with this range. It is fantastic. Bachmann's <18 month wait may actually play into my hands as I have never seen so much that I can't say no to. Best get saving!

LBSCR Sheffield Park buildings - not the idea for my next layout but I will have to buy the whole lot just in case!

The two bluebell engines are definite purchases. If I had a bit more money I'd get all 3 C classes.

I have never understood the grumblings about the B1, though I'm no rivet counter. By the sounds of it the new chassis should sort things out. The V2 is a reasonable model, the only real problem in my eyes is the very visible join along the top of the boiler.

It's good to see the suburbans back. Is it me or do they look more detailed than they used to be, with more variants? There are 2 which have higher prices than the others which makes me think they may be completely new additions that have slipped through the main announcement?

I'm in hope some shops will do GWR version with the chip removed- I can't afford the switch either. I'll probably brake myself buying the C Class when released as it is...

Re the SECR Surprise, I dare say if this version sells well, we may see more. We can live in hope... Who knows, if it DOES sell well, the companies may realise there is a demand for Pre-grouping stock (which to my knowledge, there is already.) and therefore release some more. The P classes are my particular requests...

From what I've read, the 'C' class's pretty colours ensure it will be puchased by the "I run what I like" people. People modelling a real railway period might be a different matter. )

I could say I find this post a bit elitist, but then I remember the lobbying for things like the Fowler 3MT tank and 0-8-0 which are both limited geographically, as well as being regarded as very poor locomotives.

In fact I'll bet my best hat it will be a loser like the Bullied 0-6-0.B)

So this'll be the Q1 thats back in Hornby's range this year? Prove to me that it actually lost Hornby money first time around, rather than it just being some anti - Bullied / SR diatribe and maybe your statement will have some credibility.

Surely it would have been the retailers, rather than Hornby, losing the money if it stayed on the retailer's shelves...?

The P classes are my particular requests...

Your best bet here is with a kit. Only 8 P classes built and they were considered a bit of a let down when first introduced and were quickly relegated to shunting and pilot duties.

The C class is a good choice for Bachmann as they did manage to span all the way into BR and you get the wow factor with the fantastic livery. It does make additional sense that whilst there are 4 LSWR classes and an LBSCR class on the market (or about to be on the market) for pre-grouping southern fans - Kent has been pretty neglected on the pregrouping front! (I specify pre grouping as the Schools, Bulleids etc all made it to the South East).

The O1 I suppose is the same, and I would prefer it if I had the choice between the two but I think that if Bachmann keep going down the 0-6-0 route, they will head towards the LNER.

Looks like a well balanced programme - and I wonder if there is also thought on future planning

Is a power twin 105 a logical progression to a 3 car set?

And does the COVHOP give us a correct chassis for other 21/24ton hoppers and minerals?

Other than that not too much here for Abbotswood - more Sulxer type 4s perhaps, sleepers/TPOs open up possibilities for a couple of slightly more accurate represenations of real workings and hybars welcome too - and perhaps one pillbox for brake van variety, hope there is room for tail light pick-ups underneath.

Blue Pullman? One did make it to an 85A open day, thats enough for us......

Phil

Must confess did not know much about the Wainright C class, have just looked at some photos, what a little beauty and makes a nice little mixed traffic 0-6-0, I will add that to my list.

Factory fitted dcc loco's work fine on analogue dc straight from the box so as long as you don't mind paying the extra £10 or so over the non fitted versions then you won't have a problem getting a GWR version for your layout!

Cheers, Richard

Sound blue 25 (32-407) is 25279 not 25245

according to the Bachmann site, this is not sound, but is weathered.

At £68.95, it would be the bargain of the year!

Suprised by the extent of the new announcements, particularly in N.

Also surprised by the lack of 'low cost/low risk' options. Large logo 37/0, Railfreight grey 37/0, Railfreight grey 47 etc etc

With regard to sleepers on the SR, there was a Summer Eastbourne-Glasgow St Enoch sleeper in the early 1960s. In 1963, it ran north on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and south on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, departing Eastbourne at 22:04 Mon/Wed and 21:05 Sat, and Glasgow 19:45. Formation was:

BSK

3 SLSTP

5 GUV

4 CCT

Not in my experience. I have had a couple of Bachmann DCC-fitted locos and found that their running improved when I removed the chip and replaced it with a blanking plate. Yes, DCC locos do run on DC, but not as well as ordinary DC ones. I shall be de-chipping the blue 108.

I note from the front page of RMweb that a new record has been set:

Online At Once Record - 521 - Today, 20:40

I suspect this thread could have something to do with that judging from the current number of readers...

Smashing news about the SECR C Class. They got nowhere near the North Cornwall but they are such a nice engine that I would suspect one will end up at Chez Spams.

Interesting how well it has been received - perhaps we're all a bit bored with the samey BR standards etc and folk are now ready for other (more elegant?) designs from an earlier time. At this rate it won't be too long before someone does the Adams radial tank

As far as I'm aware, the Portholes were built from ~

FK - 1950

FO - 1948

BFK - 1950

BTK - 1949/50 depending on diagram

TK - 1950

CK - 1949

The CK came out first, and photos were published in the contemporary magazines. These appear to have been the only porthole type to carry LMS red with double lining above the windows (at least the first 25 or so built), albeit unbranded and with M-prefixed numbers - unless anyone else knows otherwise.

BFK listed by Jenkinson/Essery as 1949 (Wolverton), FK as 1950 (Wolverton), TK as 1950 (Metro-Cammell), BTK as 1949-51 (Derby and Wolverton, only one diagram listed), FO as 1949 (Wolverton), CK as 1949-50 (Derby, all steel).

Very impressed with Bachmann's decision to do six diagrams of the Porthole stock, including both 57' and 60' underframes. As far as I remember whole trains of porthole stock were rare (please correct me if I'm wrong) but using a couple in a rake of Bachmann Mk1s - which should have the same version of crimson/cream - will look spectacular. Using them with Hornby Staniers will be more problematic - but c/c portholes will look good with Hornby maroon Staniers and vice versa. I must say I'm chuffed, and not only by these coaches - the C fills a huge gap, and I was already regretting not buying one of the Modelzone TPO coaches. Plus it looks as though the Twins may be cheaper than expected. Shame for Replica about the MLV, but they do seem to have been futzing around for ages. Shame too that LNER modellers - Scottish, North Eastern and East Anglian - have got less than they expected/wanted. But there's always bext year. Overall, a splendid list of offerings.

Yep, I was looking at them by diagram number in the Comet literature as I have that to hand and lumped the TK in as a BTK for some reason. I'm getting two dates for the FO of '48 and '49 though. Given that the '48 is out of whack with the rest of the Portholes I'd side with '49 for them.
