34063 '229 Squadron'

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Work on 229 has been a bit slow of late, when l looked at it l could see it was not quite right so l have started to do the cab roof again, also the loco roof is a bit of a pig to do, l have made a start on the front end, the roof area will be next, trouble is l have hundreds of bullied pics, but none of them show the roof in detail, so l need to search for some pictures of the roof etc, all the covers on the roof seem to differ from loco to loco, l need a picture of 229 squadron and stick to that, but l cant find one?

Here's an update on '229 Squadron' the tender is nearly finished, apart from the wheels and brake gear, the loco body has been a pig to do, never knew there was so much to a bullied pacific, anyway l need to work out how to do the chassis, it looks like l will have to build everything from scratch as the kit manufacturers seem very reluctant to sell me any parts from their kits, l do understand why, but anything would have helped, still searching for some decent photos to work from, l have some good drawings but you cant beat decent photos to work with, l really cant make my mind up to which livery to go for, l enjoy the dirty 1960s when everything l saw was filthy, or a much cleaner time when everything was clean, l do like the malachite green with three yellow lines and sunshine lettering 21C163 ?

At the same time 229 received the modified cab, as you have modelled, in January 1949 she was also renumbered 34163 in Southern sunshine style lettering and I believe had a anunlettered tender (ie no Southern or British Railways lettering but I need to check this and will get back to you)

She was repaintied into Brunswick in July 1951 and ran in the condition you have modelled with the high sided tender until July 1958

Hello again Graham, think l will put '229 Squadron' in BR green in 1952, when as you say she had her original high sided 4,500 gallon tender with the early BR emblem, will be quite a while yet before that happens, need to get some wheels on the chassis. regards..

George just located the thread, will watch with much interest, your work is amazing, I only wish I could do such things, may be one day, I am discovering detailing some second hand old locos which is probably my limit at the mo.

Hats off to you, thanks for sharing.

All the best

Super job, just prepping and gathering data for a 1/32 BB/WC myself.

There are quite a few sites on the net that will give you lots of detail, try this first http://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/news545.htm this will give you some overhead, cab and front bogie detail shots, then here http://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/news.htm for current news photo reports, then here http://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/archive.htm for the archived news, be prepared to spend some time on the last link, the text descriptions should help but it took me a week to sift through it all and get all the relevant data.

Although there are detail differences in the light Bullied's, quite a lot is almost identical so preserved locos can suffice for such details, one thing to watch for on the loco top are the safety valves, there's three small circular cut outs around the second boiler ring, just ahead of the recess for the whistle for the 3 valves, thats for boilers rated at 280 psi the location wasn't ideal, a sudden stop oft caused water to surge out through the valves, spattering the city gentry who where 'not amused!'. Later all boilers were derated to 250 psi around 1954 on wards, the valves were moved and two valves were fitted in the standard location near the firebox throat behind the dome in a new recess. Also be careful with the body 'roof' the cowl at the front is flat topped, however the rest is not, it has a radius of 5' 3" for approx 70% and then the 'shoulders' are radius-ed at 1' 0" ( F R Roche - Historical Locomotive Drawings Published Ian Allen ISBN 0 7110 0087 5, second hand copies are quite easy to come by) I would quite happily supply a scan of the cross sections but not sure if that would be approved by the administrators, indication purposes only of course.

Watch the wash out plugs, five on the left (drivers) side and six on the right side.

Finally, have a wade through here https://picasaweb.google.com/116839141471298057728 quite a lot of the frame shots are of a rebuild, but theres some un-rebuilt frame shots kicking around, finally look here http://www.bulleidlocos.org.uk/(S(wlyqkvtlegmzl3rxft3hte2j))/_wc/wcClass.aspx, lots of big 5" models here but each page has a snippet of info here and there, Stefans page http://www.bulleidlocos.org.uk/(S(wlyqkvtlegmzl3rxft3hte2j))/_wc/wcStefan.aspx has a nice render of frames and their cross members and Ian has some natty little sketches for components, although for a rebuild some are compatible with un rebuilt, especially the two cross members under the cab.

Hope that helps

Michael

Through lack of spare time when I visit the Mid Hants lately it's only to drive so time is at a bit of a premium when I'm up there (prepping, driving and disposal) - however we have 34105 going through the works at the minute and 34007 in service (incidentally the youngest and the oldest Bulleid in preservation). If you want any specific info about them which won't take hours to find let me know and I'll do my best, although I understand 34007 is visiting the Great Central at some stage soon.

Think I mentioned that earlier. Still built it all to the same profile! :mocking_mini:

The 8'6" cab rendering is very good, though, and looks as good as a specifically-designed kit.

When you build a kit its 'A fits to B then B fits to C' and so on, when you scratchbuild its a different matter, you need a good drawing or two and lot's and lot's of good photo's of your chosen locomotive, so any information and help given is a great help, l really appreciate all your kind word's and helpful tip's along the way, it's all stored up in a file, so l can call on them at anytime. Phil if you have any picture's of the ashpan's and all the 'gubbin's' around the pony truck etc that would be very helpful indeed, me a AndrewP used to live in Portsmouth and we used to visit the mid-hant's often, they only had 34016 'Bodmin' running at that time, never thought to take any detail photo's, Thank's to michael for the website link's to swanage, and the information on bullied pacific's, a few hundred photos to wade through there thank you very much, thank's to Andy and Chris for the kind word's, regard's georgeT

George, your more than welcome :), sympathies with scratch building, I'm hoping to CAD and photo etch most parts, then 3D print masters and cast, probably in resin.

Horsetan, apologies, missed that! (palm slap) LOL.

Here you go:

Ashpan lh side. This is the bodgeup on Wadebridge which when it came had no dampers, basically the side ashpan hoppers wer open which made boiler control difficult and setting lineside fires easy.

After the discussions on the roof I thought I'd take a stroll along one, starting from the cab and walking forward.

Don't forget the sliding hatches (one each side) behind which are the isolation valves for the turret etc.) You can see where they go from one of the previous shots.

Washout plugs were also discussed - only 5 a side on both 34007 and 34105. Very higgledy piggledy they are too:

Phil,Thank you very much for the picture's, they are just what l need, so much detail, really like the roof detail, don't think they would let me up on the roof, the drawings l have are good, but you can't beat a good photo, and your's are excellent, thank you very much for your time and effort, they will be a great help in building '229 Squadron',

Must be great driving loco's on the watercress line, they do have a good collection of southern steam locomotive's, alway's a great day out when l visit, trouble is, l now live in Manchester so l can't get down there as much as l would like,

l remember living in portsmouth as a kid, myself and some friend's would catch the train up to Waterloo every saturday, armed with my loco spotter's book, cheese'n'onion sandwhiches and a bottle of tizer or a jungle juice, we would stay on the platform's all day, we would walk up to the buffer stop's and talk to the driver/fireman, and l would say 5 out of 10 would allow you to get up onto the footplate, all the locos when free of their stock would then go to Nine Elm's depot for coal/water and a crew change, some would even let us ride to the end of the platform, oh what great day's they were, never thought they would end, oh how wrong you can be...........

Stunning model coming on there. Not sure if it helps, but I spent quite some time looking into detal difference for my representation of 92 Squadron, as she was in the early '60s (apologies for lack of detail, it was 4 years ago that I put this together). As I strive for accuracy and detail, I photographed details of 34081, 21C123, and 34007... and have some of these somewhere... although as has been said, it's important to know which details apply. Anyway... my drawing is on my gallery pages... as I said, if it helps. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/19938-my-drawing-of-92-squadron-bulleid-light-pacific-34081/

Blinding set of images, very helpfull indeed, thanks for posting, I'm hoping to get up close to 'Winston Churchill' at York next month, no roof shots mind, but hopefully some undercarriage and frame shots, hangers and streatchers etc.
