Just back from a family trip to the Algarve organised by our daughter for a post Christmas break.

While we were there we took a couple of trips on the Linha do Algarve which is currently being electrified. Definitely a few ghosts around there, especially the DMUs originally built in 1965-66 as Class 0400 and refurbished 1999 as Class 0450.

Down to one of the real ghosts. Regular steam operation on Iberia Gauge lines ceased nearly 50 years ago. As we passed through Luz station I was surprised to see this gem.

This hand crane at Travira could do with a bit of TLC.

A day out to Battersea power station produced a lot of ghosts…

its 11 years since last time I detrained at Battersea, 9th December 2012…

The last day of Platform 1 services before it was cut off..

well actually I changed trains there in May 2021 using the once daily service to platform 2 that still exists as a parliamentary service…

plat 2 is now a terminus, and 1 the track has gone.

cut to extend plat 3 to 12 carriages, a purpose that does now largely not exist.

Fast forwards to 2023…

LBSC Logo on the bridge..

so this time I thought i’d leave the station to explore…

NSE sign for the dogs home..

A bit of the gas cylinder remains..

power station itself is a ghost…

The control room and clock still work..

Some safety signage persists…amongst the retail outlets..

but the restaurant sprung this surprise in the restaurant seating area.

Theres at least 20 luggage racks being used to give the foodhall that industrial look

it kind of looks like mk1 SK luggage racks, but they arent wide enough.. only 2 seats.. so i’ve been trying to think what ?.. eliminated cig, vep, rep, epb, 205..

Any guesses ?

it is without doubt a fantastic restoration, theres a ton of machinery, switch and breaker equipment inside and around the outside of the building restored for art… there's also a photo-history gallery of the building.

so you can do as I did… go explore and leave the misses to the shops.

the photos just cannot convey the immenseness of the size of this building, inside, outside and indeed the thickness of the brick walls holding it up.

Its a panoramic picture, except i turned the iphone sideways and went bottom to top, instead of left to right :-)

helps get full length pictures in tight spaces

heres all of Tonbridge yard in one shot using Panoramic.

(I have to screen shot the image to load here as the page wont take a pano as is, but sites like facebook will gimball the images so you can roll about left right up down etc).

D1E829AE-61F6-42B1-A2AF-09275FAAEAFC.jpeg.636c5db3f01bbf5a49113076d23b8280.jpeg

and an Intercity service at from Euston to Manchester at Crewe in Sept 2022..

its different to wide angle/ fisheye as you need to move the camera…

this one for example, the train was moving and so I could hold the camera still…

3EA02052-0406-46C4-B5DE-C42EFA6B7BAA.jpeg.348bbadf4c072209f86736554de8b111.jpeg

and this was an almost 180 spin..1D0D1D37-CD61-4620-B7FC-5DEECA395927.jpeg.206beddb04c6d4aafeb9446835ca60f5.jpeg

you can do a lot with it, my little one likes being in the start, running behind me to get in the middle and hence again to bein the end, thus appears in the picture 3 times.

on another occasion last year we had a 70th birthday, I started the picture, the guy in the left end ran to me, held the camera whilst I joined the right side and hence a panoramic of all the family in one image… cool stuff… but occasionally you do lose moving arms and legs !

There must be a difference in how the Panos are taken between yours and mine.

Mine is actually a more extreme ratio about 4.4:1, whilst your's is about 3.3:1 yet yours ha much more accentuated distortion (for effect?)

Mine's about a 160 degree sweep, I assume yours is the full 180.

It's on a Motorola phone as my current digital compact camera doesn't do it, my previous one did.

Not the A60 stock either which does have longer ones but not double deck.

IMHO they are reproductions of train type luggage racks for the trendy house, for bathroom towel storage etc.

e.g. this one, similar but not identical:

ObjectsofDesign171LuggageRacks-MadAboutTheHouse.jpg.692e62275f22fec1928509c9c093dccc.jpg

That's £432

There are plenty of others on the net.

Even the LT museum is selling reproductions of tube stock ones (single shelf)

Yes this one looks much closer shape, is there a stretched height version of this ?

£432 ?

gosh at that price buying a mk1 SK just for the luggage racks might make sense !

I was bought one of the LT ones as a Birthday present last year.  Trendy and a bit daft, yes, but I'm quite looking forward to having it up on the wall :)

Hmmm - dear old "10 foot" this bu88er gets everywhere to such an extent that I think he must work in the rail industry simply because of the locations he gets to which no random Tagger would bother with - used to love "pursuing" these *sreholes when with NR - he would have been a mission of mine to get convicted.

I'm guess the "correct" answer to most of those questions was "slash public services and privatise everything in sight".

one from Buxton, the water column at the end of the disused platform

IMG_4656.jpeg.3a7e56709047518a57dd79fc80dc913f.jpeg

but all is not as it seems, it’s not an original one on the ends of the old midland platforms toward Matlock but one that was placed there in the 80s? By peak rail when they had a site in Buxton, they built new platforms but nothing came of it , I believe they planned to run through to their current line in Matlock sharing running rights with BR toward Blackwell then raking what is now the monsal trail to Bakewell and onward

given the amount of rail traffic that uses the line between Buxton and great rocks and the popularity of the monsal trail it’s hard to imaging how that would work now however there are still plans being mooted around to relay the line for quarry traffic which if it happened would be wonderful but I can’t see it happening in my career (or indeed lifetime!)

Here’s a pic I took of the site in nov 2021 while waiting at the signal on the Hindlow branch, since then the building behind is finished and the Aldi is also a ghost in the machine as it’s closed and moved elsewhere in the town!
