RMweb Premium PaulCheffus Posted May 2, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 2, 2013 I read earlier of your recommendation on paint stripper (Phoenix's Superstrip), I'm holding off buying until I know what paints/thinners etc I'll also need, as cost of shipping is prohibitive otherwise. If I plow straight into plastic work and filling now without stripping first, will things go bad when I come to strip later on? I'm just worried if it attacks the glue or filler. Hi I have had problems with Superstrip and filler (it tends to make it go soft) so personally I would strip the coach first. Cheers Paul
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 2, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 2, 2013 Working with the filler, what grade of glass paper/wet-and-dry are you using? I read earlier of your recommendation on paint stripper (Phoenix's Superstrip), I'm holding off buying until I know what paints/thinners etc I'll also need, as cost of shipping is prohibitive otherwise. If I plow straight into plastic work and filling now without stripping first, will things go bad when I come to strip later on? I'm just worried if it attacks the glue or filler. I've got a crappy air brush (can't find my old decent one, so barely trust it for weathering let alone top coats), so I might go for Phoenix's self-fill spray can - it saves me messing up the airbrush with enamel as well I guess. I was coming round to the realisation I'd have to go for an enamel or solvent based acrylic (Tamiya etc) for most of the conversion work at some point, using acrylics just for details and weathering. Thanks Jon Hi Jon, I use a very fine wet and dry - sorry, grade not to hand as I'm not near my workbench at the mo. I tend to use needle files for the main work and then finish off with the wet and dry and sometimes a fibreglass brush. As remarked As Paul says, filler and stripper don't agree. Be patient with the airbrushing - there are plenty of threads on here giving good advice and recommendations for airbrushes. Mine is an unbranded dual action obtained from Absolute Airbrush on Ebay - it was about £100 including a compressor and coarse gravity feed brush that my daughter uses for cake decoration with edible colouring. My main tip is not to scrimp on the cleaning. I used to try and use the minimum amount of thinners/solvent/whatever to clean it and it's not long before the airbrush clogs up and needing a deep clean. Not worth scrimping on the extra few pence worth of cleaner. Cheers, Mick
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 3, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 3, 2013 A new item for dual use on Blackmill and New Bryford arrived today. It's only half painted yellow though......... Hopefully, it'll pass across the workbench and have some detailing work carried out that I've never done before........ And here it is - a Wright Eclipse Gemini. The plan is to weather it a little - they are kept reasonably clean, but not that shiny. Driver and passengers to add also. I'm contemplating whether I should fit lights or not. On Blackmill we have a Britbus Dennis Dart with headlights and indicator (which is also on the bench as it needs fixing). It'll depend how much room is available inside. Other projects are ongoing. This is nearly done. And these are the LED's for 9708/9714. I've used 2mm lighthouse/tower LED's and gently filed down the moulded extension to about 1.5mm diameter. The three set includes the headlight. The black paint is to prevent any light bleed between the housings and also make them less visible through the cab windows Cheers, Mick
Swifty11
Nice job on the DVT Mick! It looks very good! The bus would look impressive with lights but as you say the other one is on the workbench and is being fixed so it's your choice but it would look the buisness!
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 5, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 5, 2013 (edited) 9714 and 9708 have had the LED's test fitted. They are powered by a decoder and set to auto reverse. The intention is to "double-head" them in DCC with the powered loco and run in a fixed formation for the exhibition. 9714 will probably pair up with 31106 and 9708 with 31285 to begin with. A little detail has been added to EMV 977983. At one end it carries sensing gear for measuring the position of the third rail. Once painted black, it's virtually invisible! Managed to get hold of the Modelzone LE Pullman FO's today to form part of my West Coast Railways set. That's one of the next projects to kick off after finishing this big yellow batch. madebymccoy
Looks really good... Any detail shots of the front and rear? I've got the 225 set from the 90's, with the original Class 91 and DVT in Intercity swallow livery. Tempted to at least detail them, but wary as to anything too significant... What couplings are you using on your NR fleet? I've been looking around for couplings to standardise on and I'm unsure whether to for for 3-link or buckeyes or a more prototypical hybrid of the two. Jon I haven't had to alter any detail front or rear - apart from a couple of electrical boxes on the corridor end. I still need to add air pipes and coupling on the front, but these are the supplied items with the DVT. All of my NR fleet has Kadees fitted, but due to a mixture of couplings on one or two locos fitted with wire loops for use with tension locks, one of my BSO's has "alternate" bogies on one end. I can fit it with either a T/L coupling bogie, or a Kadee fitted bogie, to act as a converter. Cheers, Mick
ianwales
Hi Mick Enjoyed reading this thread and Blackmill, could I just ask a couple of "yellow" related questions please. 1. Do the Network Rail NMT power cars still have the Paxman valenta units or are they now MTU's ? 2. The NR Gnerator van forthcoming from Model Rail, what train would it run with? Do the Network Rail NMT power cars still have the Paxman valenta units or are they now MTU's ? 2. The NR Gnerator van forthcoming from Model Rail, what train would it run with? Ian Hi Ian, The NMT PC's 43013/43014/43062 are now MTU engined. (Reminder - save up for a MTU HST sound decoder.....) The MR generator van is portrayed before the rebuild program about 3 years ago. All four 6261-6264 now have the inner two pairs of double doors plated up flush. Before rebuild After rebuild They run with anything that requires power - even sometimes if there's already other generator capacity within the train. There are times when the test train may have more than one generator within the set. For example: 9714/999508/6261 The easiest way to find out formations is to search via departmentals.com sightings pages, using the chosen coach as a search function. This will give dates and locations along with other vehicles seen at the same date/location. It doesn't take long to work out formations, as often the same set will be noted somewhere else a couple of days either side. Searching the various photo websites will also reveal train formations. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 20, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 20, 2013 Finally removed all the protective bits of film over the laserglaze. Planning a trip to Preston MRS for a run on Bee Lane with: 31 powered (105 or 106) 6261/999508/9714 31233/99666/975280/975081/460000/9708 37419/6264/999550/977983/9523/97304 37510/72612/9516/977997/9481/37688 Hopefully I'll try and remember to do a colour correction BEFORE I take some pics. Current future hauled stock yellow plans include another 1256 as a PLPRV, RSC1 977868 and another generator van, either 6262 or 6263, SGT2 - 977985/977986 and a repaint of my existing 977974 with extra roof detail. Bunglebear32
Hi Mick I've been following this thread for some time now and think your efforts are brilliant. You've got me addicted to NR stock and I'm on my third unit. Do you have any more information on 999602? I've seen that use comet overlays and that there's a lot of cut and shut. If I did another it would probably be a Bachmann cut n shut. However, there is a possibility that there may be some etched side overlays in preparation by another fellow yellow modeller. I believe, he's looking at doing one of the other UTU vehicles first, but I know he has good photos of 999602! 999602 has undergone a very heavy rebuild recently. It's almost unrecognisable. No real issues to worry about with the two RTOV/DBSO sets in push and pull mode. I just need to check the length of the Kadee on 31106 in push mode - it probably needs a slightly longer shank. The real test will come when pushing around New Bryford's (hidden) sharp curves. Thanks to the Preston MRS for letting me take over for an hour or so. Most of them (probably all!) will be accompanying me to the Wrecrail event in less than two weeks. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 27, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 27, 2013 (edited) Warning - not yellow...... [**] Finally got another long term project onto the finishing straight. Diesel fuel for loco depots is worked out of Fawley in 50T TTA's. This is a few of them in Didcot yard And another pair in Warrington depot. Using the Bachmann TTA as a base, I've begun an upgrade using S-Kits Bruninghaus spring units and etched walkways. First up is to cut off the existing moulded leaf spring and replace with the cast item - I've removed the axlebox from the casting as I'm retaining the existing moulded W-iron. The drilling template for handrails and ladders is taped on and 0.5mm holes drilled into the tank barrel. Walkways are then added and gently held down until the glue sets. I'll make up the transfers using Serif Plus and print them onto Crafty decal paper. There are 10 on the workbench and using a few of my own and Martyn Read's excellent pics, I'll be trying to recreate various stages of weathering and styles of labelling. Cheers, Mick [**] Don't worry - following my success using brake fluid as a paint stripper, there's five bodyshells going through the prep stage.
