Bachmann announce L&Y 2-4-2T

Its a 'Druitt-Halpin thermal storage heater. 5 short bunker and one long bunker were so fitted. Removed about 1913.

Ref Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Locomotives- Barry Lane

 

(Fitted around 1905 so doesnt seem to have been a success)

Interestingly I've just seen in a book a photo of a North Staffs 2-4-2T which apparently was a rebuild of a Longbotham 2-4-0T design. Sadly, it has little resemblance to the L&Y design and appears to be shorter in length, but it's another railway to add to the list of 2-4-2T operators!

The electric conversions don't suprise me. Gawd the L&Y was an ugly railway (most of the time).

Most companies had their visual horrors but the L&Y specialised in them! Excluding the classic Hughes 4-6-0 and 4-6-4T, the well proportioned 2-4-2T and non-Belpaire 'A' Class 0-6-0, and the workmanlike 0-6-0ST, can anyone say hand on heart the Barton-Wright 0-4-4T, 0-6-2T, Barton Wright 4-4-0s, High flyer Atlantics, 'Oldham' 2-6-2Ts, 0-8-2T and various 0-8-0's were beautiful? Not for nothing did they carry nicknames like Humpty Dumpties, Little Egberts, Same with the coaches apart from the eliptical roof flush-sided vehicles. Just my opinion. ^_^

Larry,

I do agree about some of their locos (Hoy was not a great designer,- more of a dabbler), but their carriage design was way ahead of most other companies with their flush sided coaches (sans panelling) from the late 1880's even on their six wheelers.

For those of us who model outside the L&Y area, the 1958 Observers Book of Steam Locomotives has this cryptic comment from Mr. H.C.Casserley in the class notes. "50646 has recently come south to Bedford".

Wweeeelllllll, it had to get there somehow! :O

50650 worked off Wellingborough on the Higham Ferries branch in 1956. Presumably 50646 was at 'Bedford' for the same reason. There are photos of it around.

Oh dear....maybe I should get one to compliment my collection of Cambridge-Bletcley line stock.....why did you have to post that! I liked the look of it when announced but gave a sigh of relief as I could not justify one.....

L&Y wagons were certainly pretty advanced from the amount of bits im having to CAD up for a Goole end door coal wagon!

They were the fore-runners of modern MGR trains - fully fitted block trains from the pits to the docks.

I read somewhere that the L&Y intended to have the majority of its freight stock fitted by 1920 but WW1 put a stop to it.

Horwich and Newton Heath (Carriage and Wagon works) trained many famous engineers. Gresley being one -the similarities of the L&Y and LNER fitted brake gear being an obvious example.

Some followers of this thread may remember, back in March, that Bill Bedford threw out a link to his etched P4 chassis for this loco. I spoke to him afterwards and he agreed to do the chassis in EM gauge. Well, yesterday, the chassis kit arrived in the post:

I now have the challenge to build my version before Bachmann come out with theirs. The basis for the model is an elderly Cotswold whitemetal kit:

The brass lump in the picture is supposed to be the chassis. The X04 motor is going in the scrap box.

The railtour of 1960 mentioned in post #66 was interesting in that the tour started at Newton Heath with pasenger having to access the site via the motive power depot and adjacent carriage sidings then board the train from ground level via steps. The 2-4-2T had been brought down from Southport to accompany 'A' class 0-6-0 52271 on the tour, the 0-6-0 being on the back of the train as it headed the 3 miles to the Oldham Branch at Middlton Junction. The train left the banch for the ½ mile to Chadderton along the goods only line before setting back and charging the 1-in-27 incline to Werneth.

 

I clambered all over 52271 at Lees in 1961 and took photos although I never worked on it as it wasn't at Lees in 1960. I had seen it as Wallside Pilot in Man Victoria in 1960. All Newton Heath's L&Y 0-6-0s went to Lees in 1961, giving this shed probably the largest allocation in the land.

London Road Models produce the LYR 2-4-2T's, two kits which cover all the variants. I've built four of them in the past to P4, as well as one in O gauge which now resides in Australia.

10935 in P4 having a run out on Ferring last year. First time out of the box in over 5 years and ran first time.

Stewart, you're let off - apparently the one sent to Bedford was for trial use on the Bedford to Hitchin line. Didn't last long down there.

I know this is a old post but I used to live near Middleton Junction and remember the last freight trip to Chadderton coal depot in the early eighties. I think it used a Newton Heath based 08.

 

I am tempted with the L&Y 2-4-2 although doesn't fit with my North London theme.

I'm just catching up with what's been happening this year and this little blighter nearly slipped the net !

 

Has there been any recent news/rumour on release ?

 

I'll probably pre-order anyway but need to know how long my mouth will be watrering for !

Bachamnn's website does not show any planned delivery date yet, nor has there been any sign of even a CAD drawing for them so we are still a good year or so away from the models hitting the shops I would guess. Better fit some flood defences to your mouth ;)
