The human side of the railway...

Recommended Posts

Had to smile the other day whilst stood on the platform at Banbury talking to one of the platform staff. A passenger ignored the member of staff and asked another passenger for directions. I have just the slightest suspicion though that the fact that the other passenger had long blonde hair and long, long legs may have had a bearing!

I had read previously that they could tell who was in the next box by the way the bells were pressed, this seemed to confirm the story!

It's amazing how you can tell - you'll even check the roster and then think 'That's not Dean!', for example and ring just to satisfy your own curiosity!

S&T staff at Llandudno on 5 Aug. 1984, travel in a former GWR motor car van.

Llysfaen 11 August 1999, and a solar eclipse was due about mid-day. Warnings were put out not to look at the eclipse with the naked eye, but luckily the van was well equiped with signal lenses.

Ahh the golden days before mandatory hard hats, eye protection and climbing harness (I kid you not) to get up signals. Give it another 10 and I suppose we will all have to be wearing bio-hazard suits lineside. All in the name of H&S you understand :umbrage:

Ive chatted to Mike a couple of times at Liskeard on the Cement, he's a great chap indeed.

Another that sticks in my mind is the driver that was on "Silver Bullet Syphons" all those years ago, a St Blazey man, cant remember his name for the life of me now buts he's another gem of the railway, been fortunate enough to get him on a couple of ballasts over the years and is still SB. has a Yorkshire accent.

Steve Wheatley by any chance?

I got out when the hard hat became compulsory for getting out of the van !

Thats the one!!!!!!!!! :good: :good: Top man, thanks for that.

Was racking my frazzled brain for days trying to remember! Salt of the earth that guy, spent many great hours rememising about how it used to be.

Last time I spoke to him was early in the year, he came to Tavi yard to put a failed 66 over the pit in the OTM shed, it had badly flatted wheels, I think it went away on a skate!

Lovely atmosphere in that shot, its almost as if you've gone back to 1964 with a digital camera.

Ah ha! I saw Tangmere at Exeter earlier that day. The guy delivering the coal for it in a lorry asked me directions to Riverside yard where the train later turned up.

Made a nice change from the endless procession of Vomiters and 153's etc.

The unknown box looks like Towyn.

In Prestatyn, the signalman looks like Gwyn Davies with in the background, the locking fitter, the late Ivor Williams.
