Popular Post 67A
Just some trainspotting now! A heavy unfitted coal train from the Ayrshire coalfields to Leeds Stourton trundles through Dent with BR 9F 2-10-0 92077 at the head. You take loaded wagons south...........you need to take empties north, here Super D' G2a 49395 0-8-0 has a rake of 16T steel minerals in tow as far as Kingmoor. The respective trains cross whilst running through Dent however the empties are no priority!
67A
The signalman has directed the driver of 49395 to reverse into the refuge. The signalbox coal supply will need to be shunted out of position temporarily until the empties get the right of way. The train consist just clears the ground signal and awaits permission . And here is the reason, the 'down' 'Waverley' is charging north with BR Peak 1Co-Co1 D67 'The Royal Artilleryman' making the most of the level ground through Dentdale. Having just emerged from Rise Hill tunnel ex:LMS 4F 0-6-0 43924 is southbound with cattle empties. Again its a good time to be spotting at Dent as both trains pass. After a short interlude rumbling is heard from Widdale tunnel and soon a Class 108 emerges on a Leeds-Carlisle stopper.
67A
A few shots showing the progress of the DMU One in -one out! The DMU heads into the depths of the 2629yd Rise Hill tunnel as BR Std. 4MT 4-6-0 75062 exits with a loaded ballast working.

Popular Post 67A
A rather idyllic scene Looks like some machine tools have arrived for a local engineering shop. The coal empties are still being held in the refuge due to the DMU which followed the 'Waverley'. The ballast heads over Widdale Beck The view from ground level, oh if only it were still true! That's it for now guys.

Hi Gismorail, Ahhhh the helix conundrum. They perform well with diesel outline loco's hauling quite long trains of say 11 coaches and equivalent wagons but you have to be very selective on steam choices, there is not one steam loco in my collection that will haul the same length train without assistance so I revert to double heading for those. I bought a 'Black Beetle' but as its a featherweight item its still in the box, I am toying with the idea of banking at the moment whereby a diesel I have and is not going to be used on Dent will have a sponge stuck on the nose and push the train up, when it reaches the top I will simply switch power off to that section leaving the train to proceed under single steam loco operation, I'll post my results once the theory is tested. Glad you enjoy the journey. Chester Northgate sounds an interesting project, do you have a topic running on it yet. Have you seen the new book from the Merseyside Railway History Group covering Chester, it has a few photos and info on Northgate.

Allegheny1600
Hi Mike, I don't know if it's been mentioned before, probably but the coal road bridge between the tunnel mouth and the platforms, is as fine a bit of modelling as I've ever seen! The way you've captured the streaks and water marks running down the brickwork reminds me a lot of the bridge I used to climb over and under at Findern, just south of Derby - as plenty of Peaks used to blast past on Birmingham expresses. I bet Andy P knows that area? It's still a good place to watch trains at! Cheers, John

Got to agree. I don't remember seeing the bridge really close up until the photo with the 4F underneath. When I first saw the photo, for a brief moment, I thought it was the real thing! Superb modelling. Also nice shots of 75062 passing the coal yard and the one taken from low level crossing the bridge. Alan

Cheers, John John, (sorry to go OT Mike) I've lived about 6 Miles from Derby since 2005 but only been into the Town once, (apart from Loughborough Model Centre / TTC Diecast) and passed through it on many occasions, so NO Train Spotting there I'm afraid mate. Not a clue of the area you on about mate. I agree about the Pic of the 4F and Bridge, superb.
67A
Hi all, Usual weekend update! I have been concentrating on completing the Station Masters house which is getting pretty close however a couple of things have been bugging me of late. Firstly, for weeks, no months I have tried to find the picture of a single decker bus in Dent station car park, countless revisits to my book collection gave me nothing but headaches - then eureka - I was watching the DVD entitled 'The Long Drag' and there it was! I inquired at a meeting of the Merseyside Railway History Group on Thursday night as to its type to be reliably informed it is a Leyland 'Royal Tiger - with a Leyland body' naturally I looked for a model and guess what, none yet available in the 'Ribble' livery worn by my celluloid film star - typical!!! Here is a photo taken from the TV of said bus. Another item of interest I noticed was A fair scattering of coal is noticeable on the far side of the signalbox and bothy access dirt-track. Something else to add !!! Next the problem of a lengthy and heavy train which as you are aware is proving impossible to haul up the spiral unassisted therefore use of double heading or diesel haulage have been my only options, so I tried this out... My favourite loco is just right for the Thames-Clyde but it looks like its made it unassisted! Sadly not, I removed the train and exchanged the standard couplings for the fixed rake bar type then by applying power at the rear the train managed to climb the spiral. The sponge prevents bufferlock etc. When the train emerges from Rise Hill tunnel and is capable of self haulage I simply switch the spiral isolator off, then when the train out of top level control I can reverse the banker! Simples. I will add its best to use a loco of a similar speed ratio as the Bo-Bo tended to apply a little too much effort at the rear and caused a couple of derailments but the principal looks to be a solution, yippee! continued...
67A
And now time for a bit of fun! WD 2-8-0 90445 has charge of an 'up' train of Cov-Hop's destined for some power-station or other on the east side of the Pennines. Looks to be a pretty quiet day at Dent. That coal stack will be expanding soon following recent evidence! Quiet day! Not a bit of it, a pair of EE TYpe 1's led by D8046 have surmounted the Long Drag unscathed with a heavy unfitted load of steel girders destined for the Irn-Bru factory in Scotland! Both freights cross as they pass the goods yard erm-siding! The WD is obviously taking things easy as the steel train is out of sight and the Cov-Hop's have covered little ground. Entering Widdale tunnel the crew will be struggling for breath if they need to increase speed. After a short interlude in proceedings the 'up' Thames-Clyde Express is charging through Dent with a typical charge in the form of Stanier Jubilee 4-6-0 45629 'Straits Settlements' in fine fettle. cont/....

67A
On another day... In the 'down' direction BR Derby built Peak D67 'The Royal Artilleryman' has the Leeds-Carlisle portion of 1S64 'The Waverley' which will be exchanged for A3 power from Carlisle over the Waverley route to Edinburgh. The only other named express to regularly use the Settle-Carlisle is of course the 'Thames-Clyde', here showing how reliable Kingmoor's 45629 'Straits Settlements' is she is once again charged with the 1M86 'up' 'Thames-Clyde' and showing the diesels how its done! 'The Waverley' passes the ephemera of ganger's equipment seemingly discarded including a dismantled ganger's trolley full of various tools. The old and the new pass each other! The Jubilee was my first ever recorded and the Peak I worked on many a time, now which do I like best? Nose to nose! Cont/...
67A
And now back to work... I started this weeks update by mentioning the SM house, below is the current state of affairs... The roof slates are now all fitted to the main roof with only the porch to do. Next the barge boards will be painted a dark green which is also a small fact I picked up from 'The Long Drag' DVD. Still plenty to do so keep having a look in guys.
RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted January 31, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 31, 2016 Looks like an AA meeting happening on the station approach Can I join in as I have a problem. "Hello my name is Clive and I am a 00 modeller. I know its wrong but I cannot help myself. I tried to go straight and model P4. But all the rules and the lack of compensation I soon fell off the rails. I was very tempted by EM. But in reality it is only a substitute as it is still a wrong thing to do. I hope that coming here you can all help me with my addiction. My name is Clive and I am a 00 modeller."

67A
Hi Clive, See replies... Looks like an AA meeting happening on the station approach That 1:5 was obviously too much for the sports job! Can I join in as I have a problem. Of course. "Hello my name is Clive and I am a 00 modeller. Hello Clive I know its wrong but I cannot help myself. What's wrong? I tried to go straight and model P4. Silly move dear boy. But all the rules and the lack of compensation I soon fell off the rails. You need 'Lawyers for U' for trips and falls, they will sort out your compensation. I was very tempted by EM. You know what they say about temptation! - you never know till you try it. No sorry, refer to some commandment for official advise. But in reality it is only a substitute as it is still a wrong thing to do. 'OO's the only way to go! I hope that coming here you can all help me with my addiction. Some addictions are good for you 'OO' is too! My name is Clive and I am a 00 modeller." Problem solved! You've seen the light obviously, no more need to worry, you are quite normal to all 'OO' devotees. Mike the Agony Uncle.
