Hi all,

Its almost the end of the week and I'm still awaiting delivery of materials for the 'big secret project', it will happen - I just don't known when. Apologies for what seems a bum-steer! :nono:

In the meantime I received 5 packs of screw couplings (40) and have been making some up and fitting them to the front of all loco's the tension lock has been removed.

Still having problems with my 'Waverley' set, I replaced the tension locks with KaDee's which did not perform well and as I had fitted the permanent bar coupling to my 'Thames-Clyde' set and it has performed very well I tried the same again, however on the Waverley set I still have de-railments. Over the weekend I'll try swapping the stock from the 'Up' to the 'Down' and this should rule out any trackwork problems. The tension lock system on modern stock tends to droop too much which when stock descends the spiral it can buffer-lock as the couplings ride over each other hence these trials.

I have gotten by with Kadee couplers, but have had to swap bogies around to get acceptable performance and lack of derailments.  There are some fairly wicked grades on LM, mostly to do with the floor not being flat (next time, I won't assume...) so the grades combined with 20-28" radius curves results in lots of drag from 8-11 coach trains.  The Hornby A4 had difficulty with the 10 coach train, and my Jub is rather anemic, with 8 on it is a just on the grades.

Hi all,

Been to the Preston show today, well worth the visit. I picked up a few bits and pieces from a decent selection of traders, I even got some 0.030" black plasticard, rare as hens teeth at the moment together with the 0.010" version, why? no-one seems to know. Among the layouts were two of my favourites, Annan Road and Midhurst plus the magnificently modelled North Holderness Light Railway with a wonderful selection of scratchbuilt buildings.

Still haven't received my 'secret' supply so can't even update the impending big moment, apologies for that - yet again.

Off to the Rainhill show tomorrow so very little will be done this weekend it seems.

Hi guys,

Well as with most well made plans things tend to go wrong! I never got to Rainhill show as I noticed the roof of the den had some vegetation forcing its way through, problem was we had a school behind us which decided to put one of those green steel fences which have the horizontal bars about every 10mm far too close to the boundary wall. The school has now been demolished so I took the opportunity to release part of the fence and cut out the vegetation, that little job took 2 hours! and I was cream crackered after it.

This is the gap where the shrubbery took root and was forcing itself under the steel roof covering, not good!

This is what I removed today, some of it with a girth of 4"

The site behind is now due for re-development so I hope the fence will be torn down in the near future.

Mike, you DON'T need to "do much".....

Dent is a masterpiece, and it's a pleasure to spend time looking through the lovely photos.

Just enjoy what you've created - and continue to play!

Thanks Jeff,

Trouble is I feel guilty not getting anything done, I like to achieve something when I have a little time to myself but recently this been getting eroded by other events taking precedence. I was determined to get at least one small outstanding job done today and I did, the signalman's coal supply wagon has been further detailed with proper 3 link couplings, real coal and a little cameo scene which will be on the next set of pictures, so all was not lost today. :) 'continue to play' tut-tut' I shall continue to 'OPERATE' my model railway. :beee:

Mike,

Another great set of pictures, each time I return to this thread I see something new/different - love it and great inspiration.

I have a quick question for you. I see you have a shelf running above the layout, can you tell me how high it runs above the track bed below?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve

I'll give you all the dimensions; from floor level:

Height to fiddle yard: 785 (31")

Height to Trackbed: 1345 (53")

Height to shelf: 1845 (73")

e.g 50cm or 20" above track

hope that helps

Morning Mike,

I am sorry to say that I'm just catching up having been ordered to hospital in an ambulance with neck and head restraint by an emergency phone call from the radiotherapy doctors late on the 16th of February, just as I had got you and that well known character from Essex, Clive, attempting to answer my query about the possibility of a Class 25 appearing at Hurlford, particularly towards the end of the fifties. The storage of servicing materials for diesels is very simple, and if I recall, a space was found for such facility by the 'Kilmarnock' end of the shed, in the corner formed by the engineering workshops. Why would I remember? Well my own father was selected by BR for training in diesel usage, particularly the shunting types that were being tested for use in the mineral sidings next to the shed. A lot of these were home built (Barclay's diesel factory a couple of miles up the track at Kilmarnock). We had some odd looking objects there as well! My father was well liked and got on well with the engineers as he was already running his own workshop as I've mentioned before in a ruddy great shed that took up his railway allotment space and was constructed principally of dismantled wooden wagon sides which were to be scrapped! (He even got away with tapping in to the coaling stage electricity and water supplies, I think paying the shed boss by keeping his motorcycle in shape for free).

A terrible financial error in my past, which I won't elaborate on here, but is all my responsibility, has left things rather awkward for Joanna when I do shrug off this mortal coil. For this reason alone, I will somehow use the 25 that I have, perhaps with a detailing kit, as I can hardly ignore the fact I have the basic unit to hand. This goes for the standard ex Airfix (GMR) 4F which has yet to sit on track despite being close to forty years old! We of course have plenty of photographs of that and several others doing local duty.

I am determined, even if it is unlikely, to use the 25 and so it may come down to 'unlikely story' time, although there is plenty of evidence to show that both late steam and early diesel traction used the section of the G&SWR from Carlisle to Kilmarnock and back as a test track back then. I had just hoped that a particular loco, or batch would have suggested itself to you, before my medical problem struck, and I apologise that I'm only now getting back to catching up where medical interruption caused me to, as it were, lose the thread since you kindly tried to help originally, back on the 16th February 2016.

I am in no hurry, as I intend to start on a couple of small modular sections of the greater plan, possibly practising on the bothy/shelter between the coaling stage and ash pits, and following this with the coaling stage area itself. I can't get an accurate prognosis on the latest advance in my secondary bone cancer which seems to have advanced up the spine and destroyed C1 vertebra and so I wish to work, small module by module, slowly building these on to a single framework, although considerably lighter and smaller than Jeff's KL, as well as the superb creation of yours. I simply don't feel up to, nor indeed do I have the courage to attempt to, make a fine example of a prototype like your creation at Dent where once again catching up with all the photographs has been an absolute pleasure!!

Please forgive me for opening up on your thread, and at the same time for disappearing in to a modern hospital devoid of a usable Internet facility just when you were trying to help me. I will set my mind to your 'big teaser' as and when I can, and meanwhile - where did I put that book that shows me how to scale a building fro the bricks in it as you might guess that there is only one picture of the bothy I referred to earlier, and that is showing one proper gable end and chimney so should be easy?? At least it is next to a Std Class 4 2-6-0 loco to check the scale and I will begin by explaining that I seek only to recreate the feel and smells that I enjoyed whilst running about the whole facility. (I think that I must have been around fourteen or so when dad moved us to Clive's patch, and I know I was not quite five when we moved from Dad's previous base at Dumfries shed where I was born, in to one of the very basic dwellings known as 1A Block Maisonettes, Barleith, Hurlford, Ayrshire, not realising that despite all the wonderful experiences I have had in life are to be overshadowed by those few wonderful years). It was the one closest to the shed!

Thank you for putting up with the dreams of an old fellow, I woke early to them this morning as the carer is due to get here at 7am to get me ready to go to hospital in Colchester for a change of neck brace lining. I will leave you to your grand design now, but would be happy if you, or one of your many followers, could suggest, even at random, what 25 to use

Thank you very much, and kind regards,

Jock.

Hi Jock,

Just a quick acknowledgement before heading for work, if you want a particular 25 just ask me if its relevant to Kingmoor or I could give you Kingmoor's allocation up to end of 1968 so you could choose a candidate. Sorry to hear your spinal problem is worsening, my wife Laura has Pagett's disease which is a bone disorder and she has had a 'fusion' operation done on C2 or C3 some years ago. The specialist rightly advised on the chances of the op' going wrong and could cause her to be paralysed or even lose her voice, when she came out of recovery she was unable to move her left arm or leg and panic set in, the consultant came immediately and organised an MRI scan and said to him of all the things that could have gone wrong she hasn't lost her voice! He couldn't help but laugh.

Thank you Mike,

I will take you up on that kind offer, especially if there might be one that has some photographs available! The 'catcher' box shouldn't represent a major re-modelling if you chose one so fitted, and I think all the plumbing will be easy enough to represent with wires etc. at both ends. Thank you for your help once more, and try not to work too hard - I'm off to get ready for our trip to Colchester!

Kind regards,

Jock.

NO :O

I STILL SAY YOUR GOING AROUND THE BEND, whoops sorry ROOM.

Agree with you there, Andy.

Mike's dropped a few clues about the changing view within the den, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a few rearrangements and track extensions.

Now - is he going to tell us what he's planning BEFORE he starts.....?

Nice to see several joining in with a few guesses but I'm staying tight lipped, I am indeed working on it now so perhaps this weekend there may be some progress!

Another piece of news I received and have acted upon immediately is Replica Railways have re-introduced their 'Powered Die-cast Chassis' in 57' version with the 64' to follow hopefully by the year end. I have ordered 2 today so will have a BG at the rear of the TCE and Waverley! Now then the PowerBase issue could result in one being redundant eh!
