I reckon Andy has it!!

I don't see you changing to an all diesel powered layout so my thoughts are that helix(ice?) will go.

I think you have far too much stock to do any gauge changing or anything like that! Neither would you adopt a non-British approach (traction tyres or multi locos) so here we go;

Sell your shed layout and fill the entire area with S&C stuff - moderate gradients or flat track and do a Jeff with some MAJOR fell work!

Cheers,

John.

Hi John,

Its taken me years to collect this lot, I'm not about to ditch it now - am I?

Part 2...

post-5296-0-78568500-1456072401_thumb.jpg

There is obviously something going on at Dent today as we have an 'up' local complete with a few parcels vans and a horsebox awaiting departure whilst in the 'down' platform hosts a Carlisle bound service provided by a Class 108 DMU. In addition there are two coaches in the station forecourt plying for business.

post-5296-0-50445800-1456072420_thumb.jpg

The same trains viewed from the south end, I hope no one is late for the Skipton bound service as the driver has drawn past the barrow crossing. Note the revised lighting, a little more dulling down required but they are getting better now.

post-5296-0-37711400-1456072433_thumb.jpg

In the 'down' refuge siding BR Standard 4 2-6-0 76079 has been given the task of supplying water churns to the signalboxes along the 'down' side of the line and needless to say in those far off times the crew take time out for a brew-up.

post-5296-0-08307600-1456072441_thumb.jpg

The Ivatt, 41224 restarts its journey to Skipton now the few parcels are loaded and its all downhill from here for the 2MT's crew. The ganger is applying 'Black Jap' grease to the point blades and mechanisms.

post-5296-0-19686700-1456072449_thumb.jpg

Getting my feet wet in Widdale Beck I just caught the front end of Stanier Black 5 45156 'Ayrshire Yeomanry' exiting Widdale tunnel, the crew will breathing some fresh air at last.

post-5296-0-18317200-1456072461_thumb.jpg

Rushing up the bank at lightning speed we get an almost level view of the Class 5 at work, the driver giving us a wave.

post-5296-0-49348800-1456072469_thumb.jpg

Now we can see what the payload is, a parcels service to Carlisle where the Black 5 will be relieved and the train shunted for various destinations beyond.

post-5296-0-09186700-1456072478_thumb.jpg

Its such a crying shame that 45156 survived almost to the bitter end but did not get chosen for preservation.

post-5296-0-06256500-1456072487_thumb.jpg

The signalman has a couple of wagons in front of the box', The usual coal supply and an unfitted 'sand' wagon being used by the permanent way department to dispose of old equipment.

post-5296-0-62405300-1456072494_thumb.jpg

The station porter is so dedicated to ensuing his duties are done correctly he does not even glance at the majesty of Stanier's masterpiece!

Bridge No.95 over 'Monkey Beck' rumbles as the Class 5 rolls onward to Rise Hill tunnel

post-5296-0-57735300-1456075288_thumb.jpg

From atop Widdale tunnel we see clearly the roof detail of a pioneer member of the 'Peak' Class as it emerges into Dentdale

post-5296-0-78806800-1456075295_thumb.jpg

The 'Peak' is in fact the doyen of the Class D1 'Scafell Pike' and the view from the opposite side is spoiled rather by seeing the tail end of the train its hauling - another little job to do!

post-5296-0-55189900-1456075302_thumb.jpg

The poor Ganger is trying hard to get across the line!

post-5296-0-59914300-1456075309_thumb.jpg

BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 75062 enters Dent station environs having just passed under Bridge No.96 'The Coal Road'

post-5296-0-37706700-1456075316_thumb.jpg

75062 has a ballast working in tow as the train sedately passes through.

post-5296-0-15986800-1456075330_thumb.jpg

Both trains have a downhill run from here onward, I doubt the crew of the 'Peak' are bothered but the fireman on the 4MT will soon be having a well deserved rest.

I reckon it's a change to blue era but with 'proper' pre-TOPS numbers.  Just to ring the changes occasionally!

Hi Neil,

That idea is already been done and every now and then a Blue & Grey period emerges, good effort though.

Cheers for my weekend FIX Mike, really great shots,

BUT, THIRD PICS DOWN in the last set, is that Blu Tac under the Brake Van?

No mate, its a 'Gaugemaster Dust Monkey' on the axle, I usually felt pen the ends but this one somehow got overlooked, they really do work by the way.

Hi Mike

Catching up after a few weeks away... had to come back as I was really starting to miss the English weather :)

More great photos and any shots of Ayrshire Yeomanary will always get a "like" from me. She was a favourite engine on an exhibition layout I had many years ago. I also like the 2-6-2 and Class 108 standing in the platforms. Not sure about the 20 and 25 on the later Mk2 aircons !! It's only my personal opinion but your layout definitely looks at it's best with steam/green diesels.

I thought the Mk2 D-E-Fs were smart looking coaches and for years I kept a full ECML rake to run behind Deltic 55017. The layout I planned for them was never built...the coaches and the Deltic now all gone alas...

HI Alan,

Fear not the 20, 25 and Mk3 set all belong to a friend of mine, you can rest easy. As for buying things only to get rid of them - I wrote the book I think!

A message from Jock.

I have had a big scare, but I'm now on radiotherapy as of today, and through to next Tuesday (1st)or Wednnesday. I think if you post the message on Pencarne, ERs, Lunester Asylum, Dent Station and then most of my digital friends will know what is happening. There isn't any WiFi here but my daughter has visited me, giving me a short period of access. All being well I'll be back to normal after that, next week.
Much appreciated mate, kind regards,
Jock.

Hi Mike

Hope you don't mind me mentioning... the first 3-4 coaches are definitely late air con Mk2s. The quickest way to ID them is that all the underframe items - battery boxes, air con fans etc are visible. With Mk3s its all hidden behind a steamlined underframe. The problem with these late Mk2s is, they're a minefield as to what type of loco can run with which type of coach...Air con/ETH differed between Mk2 Ds Es and Fs. Deltics and 47/4 generators were definitely limited as to which type they could power.

Regards

Alan

Hi Alan,

Thanks for that, out of my era and comfort zone I'm afraid, I'll tell my friend though as I'm sure he said they were Mk3's.

I like the  pictures of Reading (in particular - although all are enjoyable) especially as they show scenes which have now almost totally vanished.  The oddest thing about the pictures is that in both of them almost the only thing which is still there is the oldest thing in the photo - the clock tower on top of the original 1850s station building.  The only other thing which still survives is some of the platform itself (was No. 5 back then, now No. 8 where the D10XX is standing although the track serving that face is still in the same position.  Everything else, including Western Tower in the left background of the colour picture, has gone - totally vanished.

Thanks Mike,

I used to love going to Reading as there was a very enjoyable mix of traction and train types. The last time I was there I spent the whole day from 07.00 through to about 17.30 walking up and down all the platforms to take different shots of mundane Voyagers and HST's with the odd freight breaking the monotony, towards the end of the day I sort of noticed most people looked downright dismal and I initially thought living in the south is not for me! I then left the station to find a cafe or something and noticed a large police presence, my little brain thought Reading-Police-Windsor AhHa! perhaps there's a Royal Train duty so I asked a 'nice' policeman on horseback the question he said no, so I asked what all the fuss was, he replied: "Where have you been all day" bemused I answered honestly that had been on the platform taking train pictures, his response " Don't you know what's happened in the world today?" - No! "Have you not seen the front cover of all the papers?" - No! He pointed to a newspaper vendor and his stall which had the picture of a multi-storey building with what looked like an explosion near the top and said "There has been two horrendous terrorists attacks on New York" I looked again at the picture and said I thought it was an advert for a film or something, he finished the conversation with "GET A LIFE" I couldn't really argue given the circumstances. 9/11 I'll never forget that day.

I can remember the evening when the Irish boyos set off a bomb at Reading - rather inconveniently choosing the signal on the approach to the electric platforms as their target.   We lived at that time in Tilehurst about 2 miles away from the scene and we heard the bang - it was quite impressive (or scary - with a nuclear bomb factory only about 5 miles away) and very loud considering that all it did was fell one signal.

Hi all,

Its the weekend and here is the update...

post-5296-0-71761600-1456684856_thumb.jpg

Its very early morning at Dent and Stanier 8F 48732 is heading south with a train of 'Covhops' in tow.

post-5296-0-51247400-1456684868_thumb.jpg

Running past the Up waiting room it looks like the old girl on the seat is having an early morning nap! The helpful shed staff at Neath MPD have cleaned the cabside numbers for us!

post-5296-0-33007800-1456684876_thumb.jpg

The morning light catches the sides of the Covhops giving them a nice glint.

post-5296-0-37963000-1456684890_thumb.jpg

The 8F heads into Widdale tunnel destined for South Wales and will take the Blackburn line at Hellifield.

post-5296-0-69002600-1456684897_thumb.jpg

Next up is a fast fitted Fish train destined for Manchester whereJubilee 45600 'Bermuda' will be serviced at its home depot, Newton Heath.

post-5296-0-10437600-1456684903_thumb.jpg

The fireman is apparently studying the boiler gauges!

post-5296-0-06530800-1456684911_thumb.jpg

The sun has not yet surfaced fully which is casting a shadow from the lineside buildings.

post-5296-0-97245000-1456684923_thumb.jpg

Without obstruction the sunlight again highlights the train as it runs through Dentdale.

post-5296-0-63804600-1456684929_thumb.jpg

Following a short lull in traffic yet another southbound freight working emerges from Rise Hill tunnel with Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 43047 of Heaton Mersey depot, doubtless this is yet another Blackburn line candidate for the Hellifield signallers.

The 'Flying Pigs' may not have won any beauty competitions but they were a sound and powerful loco.

post-5296-0-12594300-1456686435_thumb.jpg

An easy run now for the 4MT's crew.

The stopper is awaiting a whistle from the guard before setting off for Garsdale, next stop.

Following the stopper is Stanier 8F 48154 of Birkenhead MPD

An overhead view picks out the fine lines of the 8F as it emerges from Widdale tunnel.

The fitted freight runs steadily along the natural shelf of Widdale Fell courtesy of Allport and Crossland of the magnificent Midland Railway c1875.

The depths of the 1269 yard Rise Hill tunnel beckons the 8F and its Carlisle bound fitted freight.

post-5296-0-81018400-1456688485_thumb.jpg

Next in the Down' direction is a train of empty mineral wagons hauled by a comparative stranger to the S&C, LNWR 'Super D' G2a 49395 running tender first.

post-5296-0-04195500-1456688494_thumb.jpg

You can just about hear the clanking of the empties on the rail joints as the train traverses Widdale viaduct.

post-5296-0-68876700-1456688499_thumb.jpg

I do like this shot!

post-5296-0-77569200-1456688505_thumb.jpg

Not so keen on this one, flash had to used which killed off the foreground and the background well enough said! Must do something about that as it would be nice to see the station frontage a little more often.

post-5296-0-92748000-1456689348_thumb.jpg

Another train of mineral empties exits Widdale tunnel with 8F 48739 at the head.

post-5296-0-05458200-1456689354_thumb.jpg

Spotting view from the adjacent fields.

post-5296-0-34604100-1456689365_thumb.jpg

Another seldom seen vantage point with the same drawbacks, I may just hang a curtain prior to taking photos.

post-5296-0-50495000-1456689372_thumb.jpg

Another unusual view to be improved!

That's it guys.

You may or may not have noticed I have now fitted screw couplings to the front of all loco's in the photos together with some fire-irons atop the tender on several suitable candidates. This will be done to all loco's as time and materials permit, ran out today and have ordered more from Peter's Spares.
