That's a great idea Polly, thank you, one of the dilemmas I have is that the some of the best shots on the layout point the camera at the operating side - which obviously can't have a permanent backscene, so your idea would mean I could put them where necessary if i need them.

On the operating side I put strips of velcro on the side of the baseboard Al, strategically placed. Mating strip on a piece of 2mm card, or some foamboard, and you have a quick fix temporary backscene.

That sounds a great idea, too, thanks Gilbert. I was thinking big boards on stands, but actually your way sounds cheaper and easier.

Layout's looking really good Al. I do like the ground level view in the videos!

Something I can never get across to folks at the show each year, is to bend down and take the pictures and Vids!

That's brilliant Al, I was almost expecting a strident whistle to blow as it went past to warn you to get away from the tracks! :)

Any freight trains running yet Al? Much as I enjoy the pax, especially the Peak with "borrowed" sound..!

As requested... :)

Well done, Al.

Really good progress and always very satisfying once the trains start moving.

Don't play too much or you'll never get finished!

Jeff

Thanks Jeff.

I bet you can taste the sawdust of KL2 now :)

I know, lots more to do, but it's great to have trains running.

Cheers,

AL.

Hi Al, just catching up. Some lovely videos. Regarding your post about sound, I say go for it with your steamers. I got a DCC set-up at York show, NCE and got a sound chip for one of my 3Fs from DCCconcepts .Okay, it's a generic LMS 2 cylinder loco 2P/3F (hopefully from a preserved 3F) but it's great fun. At first I thought you had to get a "movement" chip plus a sound chip and wondered why I couldn't get them fitted until I realised the sound chip moved the loco as well! :locomotive: Only had it going on my rolling road but who needs a layout?

I've finally found some time to

a/ do a bit of modelling, and

b/ take some photos.

So, here we go.

First, the drums, crates and sacks that I made a while ago have been placed on the loading dock of the goods shed:

Next, I turned my attention back to lighting.

I was never particularly happy with the original lighting I added in the goods shed. It gave adequate light, but didn't look at all prototypical, resembling a bank of sun floods more than anything.

So, I started again. I fashioned some light holders out of styrene tube:

These are still not very prototypical, but a lot better than the strip of LEDs.

Then I used two of the small LEDs that I used for the station lamps, and some small resistors:

These were fixed in the roof over the loading platform, one at each side.

The end results are quite good, and show off the interior detail nicely:

Also using one of the small LEDs I decided to light the signal box.

I fashioned another holder for the LED using styrene tube, both round and square:

This was done, more than anything to make it easier to mount the LED in the roof of the Signal Box.

post-17302-0-03533400-1400539866_thumb.jpg

I wired it using the thin single core that I had used for the platform lamps, and fed it down the back corner of the Box through the floor.

The end result is again quite pleasing:

Thanks for looking,

Finally for tonight, ...and quite appropriately, here's some "night" shots of the layout:

They're a bit dark - but it's meant to be night, you see :)

Cheers,

Al.

The one looking into the booking office is a cracker! Night modes are always tempting on layouts but you never use them at exhibitions as the halls are inevitably quite light. Certainly something that works well at home though.

Hi Al

That goods shed is absolutely brilliant inside and out, you have set the standard for us to follow now and I have my work cut out to come anywhere near close to that when I build mine, I'll have to start giving it a lot of thought.

I always thought I wouldn't bother with lights but you have shown how good they can be, reminds me of my Pendon visit and also why it is a good idea to model interiors, yet more food for thought.

Keep up the great and inspirational work.

Al,

What can I say?  It does look good.  Brilliant!

You appear to have spilt something in the Goods Shed, I hope it is not dangerous.  ;)

On a semi serious note.  How bright were/are lights in a signal box?  You need to see which levers to pull but how much do you need to see outside?  Mind you, I suppose you need a reasonable amount of light to do the modelling than some signal persons seem to do on their night shifts.

Hi Chris, thanks very much.

Yes, I've tried to make it look like the oil drum is leaking - I'll paint it when it's set properly.

I think you're right, the signal box lighting is probably a bit too bright at the moment. I can tweak that down a bit with some added resistors though.

Cheers mate,

Al.
