Orinoco
What I like so much about these images is that they show the everyday, the ordinary and the mundane, rather than just top link stuff. If only more photographers of the period had done the same! Edited May 22, 2013 by Orinoco 1

coachmann
Interesting to find ex LNWR coaches in the express passenger trains. They werent always as ancient as thye looked but even so they werent the strongest built of passenger vehicles especially the toplights.

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted May 23, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 23, 2013 (edited) Most of this afternoon's are around Grantham and we are in the period up to around 1951 when the image quality varied a lot depending on what was available in the way of film and paper. LNER4479
Thanks for further Grantham photos Dave - love the glorious mix of wagons on the iron ore train! The Gresley coach in the middle of the Pullman rake is intriguing! Never seen this before - is it an emergency replacement for a defective vehicle? Could be a FK (or FO?) which would be a reasonable substitute. How many other photographers would point their camera at the middle of the train like this rather than the loco...

Do you get the impression I was in too much of a hurry when I did these captions and didn't check properly? If you did you are right! I've altered the captions. By the way, I've now found a list of Pullman cars allocated to the various regions in the Ian Allan Combined Volume Winter 1955/6. RMweb Premium melmerby Posted May 23, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 23, 2013 These pictures showing A4s on goods trains prove that the Eastern Region had too many pacifics! No wonder there were calls, at various times, to transfer some to the LMR. Keith They did have a lot, but didn't build as many 4-6-0 types. The goods in question may well be the famous Scotch Goods, it ran at such a speed that it was rostered a pacific.
coachmann
Great to see the real days of steam in these photos. Not a great chance of seeing such images on video productions apart from from a few select film makers who took up cine as a hobby long before the mass-panic of 1967-8 when folk just giddily swing the family Bolex at anything that steamed.

Peter Kazmierczak
I find the picture of the EM2 at Torside incredibly depressing. An electric railway, good quality heavy duty flatbottom track, modern Mk1 stock, reliable motive power - all gone.
