There is a cover panel missing: you can make out the previously covered paint and two mounting holes. I suspect that the engine has had a rough shunt and bent the buffer beam back slightly, distorting the reinforcing gussets to the beam and displacing the panel.

David,

4F on the "Down Goods at Trowell Jn" looks more like somewhere on the Up Goods between Trent and Loughborough to me.

Regards,

Peter

Probably somewhere around Normanton on Soar, I expect I've read part of the notes for the next print.

Many thanks,

David

These photos show only too well just how massively interesting BR was in the early to mid 1950s on every front with around 19,000 steam locomotives to see, not to mention rolling stock and infrastucture. The pictures also put into perspective just how dull the electrified Woodhead route appeared post electrification to linesiders.

It is interesting (to me) to see how the ex LMS wooden Period I coaches occasionally popped up on frontline duties. It was different on the Eastern Region of BR where ex-GNR corridor stock mixed with Gresley and Thomposon coaches on frontline duties, but of course Gresley continued building in teak into the late 1930s and so perpetuated a situation that had existed before 1923.

A bit of a mixed bag again this afternoon, most had been printed from small areas of the negatives so are very grainy.  I hope you will still enjoy seeing them.

But why does it have headlamps for a Class D train - express freight, livestock perishable or ballast with at least one third vacuum brakes piped to the engine?

Sir Archibald Sinclair at Cambridge, as an eastern region modeller I've wondered for a few years what to do with that Battle of Britain class 'Sir Eustace Missenden' in my collection ( I won it in a prize draw at Pecorama) as apparently it was in sunshine livery whilst on the Eastern region. Apparently the cab widths are different by 6 inches but I think I can live with that if there aren't any other major differences, just a rename and number might be enough? As I'm moving the time frame of my layout backwards I can just about justify it

Truly inspiring stuff as always, don't worry about the quality this collection is priceless, absolutely fantastic shots. Keep 'em coming.

That picture of the A5 at Weekday Cross is really something, tremendous impression of an impressive looking engine.

Now to the headlamp code and I have a theory - while being the first to admit I'm not an expert am not too well up on ER train classification at that period.  Firstly you've noted the date as approximate so it might possibly be in 1950 rather than 1951?  Which leads to my potential explanation - the headcodes were changed in May 1950 and using a Western source (which might not work for the GC of course, so big caveat) the Classification of ECS trains was changed from D to C.  However the lamping also changed and the old Class C lamps were used for the new Class D, and vice versa - so was this an ECS (or off an ECS) and had the Fireman assumed that the new Class D lamp code applied to a train which had once been Class D but had become Class C, or that the old Class C code would be used as an ECS was now Class C - in other words he got it wrong twice.

Maybe a bit of a convoluted explanation, just easily teh lamps hadn't been changed since a previous working of course.
