RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted May 16, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 16, 2013 Another few batches of classic shots. Just look at the tidy area around Trowell Station (ballast etc.) in the shot (last in 534) of the double header; wonderful and a credit to the 'linemen' locally. This collection is priceless David. Had you thought of some sort of publishing or offering them to the National Collection or, at least, Notts Archives at a later date? Phil
Jack P
Can only echo what's been said above -. Fantastic shots. You're making me want some form of Garrett though, which could lead me into dangerous territory!

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted May 16, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 16, 2013 (edited) Here is the selection for this afternoon, once again most of them around Notingham taken at various times of the year in a mix of weather conditions. One, the Jubilee, has been seen before but this is from a slightly sharper print. Hence there are nine images instead of eight. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted May 16, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 16, 2013 I think 5031 might be a drill. One of the extra values of these marvellous pics is that your dad didn't just take pictures of engines - we owe him a debt for having a wider ranging lens in times when it was not easy to get hold of film etc.
LNER4479
5031 is definitely a drill! I say that because I once used one of these things that someone had 'acquired' in the early days of a preservation scheme. Used for drilling holes in the ends of lengths of rails for the fishplate bolts, no less! You lift the bottom half (with the handles) up to the vertical position, which engages the bevel cogs at the other end. You engage the yoked clamp-like assembly (folded back on top of the drill in the picture) underneath the rail, then two of you crank the handles like mad to make the drill bit turn!! We reckoned if we could drill a hole in less than 10 minutes we was doing well If you think that was bad, you should try the manual rail saw! Fascinating insight though as to how them platelayers used to have to go about their work in the 'good ol' days'... RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted May 17, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 17, 2013 (edited) When I was working on a temp contract with Notts CC in 2004/5 I was based mostly at Trent Bridge House. Depending upon which route I took when driving in to work (taking around 50 minutes from 36E), I often went over this bridge. It was a good 3 months into the contract before I discovered what it had been. I then went and had a poke around West Bridgeford and out towards Plumtree to see what was what. When I caught the train to Work (taking almost two hours including the drive to Worksop and walk from 'Midland') on the 'Robin Hood' line was when I began to get curious about the 'old routes' and look where that has got me Thanks then for posting this shot of the Black 5 on the 'outing' and the Fairburn. I've been over there but not in such style! In the Grantham shots of the 'down' JVol5058, I assume that was the fast through line? Phil In 5058 (and 5057) Dad was standing at the north end of the up platform - the line on the left of the platform is a bay (I think used for Lincoln trains but it was a long time ago...) The A4 is on the down platform line, normally used by all northbound passenger trains. 5058a was mis captioned - it is an up train and I have altered it! RMweb Premium melmerby Posted May 17, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 17, 2013 Actually I'm surprised that we haven't seen a Hall or Grange at Notts Vic as I thought the GWR locos did work through on occasionly cross country trains. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted May 17, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 17, 2013 Actually I'm surprised that we haven't seen a Hall or Grange at Notts Vic as I thought the GWR locos did work through on occasionly cross country trains. (Or maybe not?) Keith I remember seeing both Halls and Granges at various times in the late 50s and early 60s but I don't think Dad was ever there at the right time of day. I've looked at all his photos and certainly haven't found any. Photos of Hall's are to be found in a number of books, I don't remember seeing a photo of a Grange. I'm not sure when the ex GWR locos started working through, it may have been after he stopped taking so many photos - the reason for that will be explained when we get to the end of the photos. I think that at one time ex GWR locos only worked as far as Leicester Central. David
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted May 17, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 17, 2013 The (very nice) Chester photos show Chester No.4 signal box and it's signals, to the left the line curves away to North Wales / Wrexham to the right the line goes to Birkenhead Woodside - the shed is the GWR one (still open but completely rebuilt as a 175 maintenance depot), the LMS shed was at the other end of the station. Apart from the odd ground disc every signal is pure LNWR. For those in the know the gap between the main and calling on arm visible in 5055 is apparently large, this is because at one time the LNWR provided fixed distant signals under all the homes - the LMS twigged that these were superfluous and removed them - hence the gap. This gantry was dual worked by Chester No.3A cabin, which is why there are slot weights visible within the gantry structure. 5056 shows the bridge signals which acted as Chester No.4 down homes, these were unusual as the operating rod acted down on the arms, rather than pushing them to off from underneath, these signals were replaced by colour lights ca 1955 and these colour lights were then replaced by modern colour lights in the early 1980s and are now controlled by Chester PSB. Notice also the double disc to the right, showing two different shades of red, one will be "signal red" and the other more of a maroon red.
Fat Controller
Photo 5047- that Siphon G is wandering even further away from the WR.. I only once was on a train that stopped at that down platform, in 1962 and an A3 'swap' took place. Lovely. P
