RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted June 13, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 13, 2013 All but one of this afternoon's are around Nottingham and Grantham. One or two are repeats but from better prints. The line coming in from the left is the connection from the Nottingham to Grantham line, allowing GNR trains to travel directly from Nottingham to Newark. In its latter years the line was used by oil trains from Immingham area to Colwick oil depot. Tequila Sunrise
Great photos as always - one query though is "Bottesford North Junction GNR and LNWR view towards Newark taken from Nottingham to Grantham train c1950 JVol4287" really the case? The camera seems very high above the rails to me. Was your dad standing on the roof? Edited June 13, 2013 by Tequila Sunrise
Peter Kazmierczak
There's no doubt about the location being Bottesford. Or the fact that it's taken from a train on the Nottm - Grantham line as it crosses over the "Joint".

The camera seems very high above the rails to me. Was your dad standing on the roof? Western Sunset's map helps explain it, the Nottingham to Grantham line was on an overbridge over the other line. My parents lived in Bottesford at one time around 1980 and I've actually walked most of the disused lines round there. It's quite an interesting area. It did take me a little while to check the location, I ended up once again checking the bridge using Google Earth - only the bridge in the background seems to have been removed, but it was there when I went back to an earlier photo on Google Earth (1999 I think). RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted June 13, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 13, 2013 This evening's photos are mainly in and around Cambridge - apart from one in Nottingham. Most have been seen before but these are, once again, better prints. The catalogue for this volume is more detailed, and some prints have information on the back. Hence I can provide much more accurate dates (though most are not too different from what I had estimated before). In some cases there are also details of camera and exposure. Peter Kazmierczak
This view from David takes my fancy. Just look at the ballasting; or lack thereof. This is no railway backwater either but part of the switch diamond north of Rugby where the up Birmingham line crosses the WCML down fast.
JeffP
"Silver Fox" at cambridge? Were A4's and other pacifics used much on the ex-GE routes?
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted June 13, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 13, 2013 (edited) "Silver Fox" at cambridge? Were A4's and other pacifics used much on the ex-GE routes? I believe that the King's Cross to Cambridge trains were sometimes used as "running in" turns for locos recently overhauled or repaired after mechanical problems. Dad also mentioned once that he understood that Pacifics were occasionally used to cover for loco failures. A3s also turned up at Cambridge, there is a photo in this thread of an A3 at Trumpington. I don't think Pacifics were an everyday sight, theses are the only photos of Dad's I have found of Pacifics at or near Cambridge in 1947 -9. I'm not sure how often he was photographing, film was hard to come then by so I suspect he would take photos until the film ran out and then there might me a gap until he managed to obtain some more. Also he was a student at the time so he wasn't always free! Edited June 13, 2013 by DaveF
BR(W)
Hello. "Paddington 51xx 5176 ecs Aug 48 JVol4270" Sorry, but I don't think it's Paddington; it looks more like Birkenhead Woodside and this would explain the 6C shedcode. 5101s were used quite extensively as pilots at this time. Anyone agree? Cheers, BR(W). Edited June 13, 2013 by BR(W)

He has replied saying that the 06.05 Kings Cross to Cambridge returning on the up Cambridge Buffet Express was used as a running in turn, all types of Pacifics and V2s were regulars on that diagram. In Febraury 1948 he has records of 60003, 13 (twice), 21, 55 (3 times), 97, 109 and 508 (twice). 17/60017 was certainly seen on 28th Jan and 13 March. I don't know how accurate this info is but: According to the "BR database" Birkenhead didn't become 6C until 01/02/50 and 5176 (Birkenhead's first 5101) didn't arrive until 09/09/50 http://www.brdatabase.info/sites.php?page=depots&action=query&id=66 http://www.brdatabase.info/locoqry.php?action=locodata&type=S&id=103359&loco=5176 Keith Edited June 14, 2013 by melmerby

Nick Holliday
Interesting that the view of B17 1641 at Trumpington shows that there were still turnouts with interlaced sleepers on a main line in BR days, albeit in the GER style with proper crossing timbers under the frog. I thought that this practice had died out by Grouping, and the examples that did linger into the sixties were mainly on sleepy Scottish branchlines.

RMweb Premium melmerby Posted June 14, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 14, 2013 Really like the one with 61094. IMHO The composition seems to have everything just about right. e.g. the angle of the shot, the position of the loco on the junction, the smoke and the background. As always some lovely shots.
