P Well, in the more recent past, ferry chemical tankers ran to the works at Duxford south of Cambridge. Whether that facility existed so far back, I couldn't say - but it has the appearance of being of WW2 origin. The core product was, I think, synthetic glue, so a connection with wartime airframe construction is a possibility. Just idle speculation ..... So, if the factory has been at Duxford since 1934, then the tank wagons in the photo could well have originated there. I think it might have been some sort of special working, but Dad's notes aren't clear. David Edit - having looked at his notes again I think it was a normal service train. At that time, I suspect they'd have been bring bulk raw materials in, rather than taking stuff out. Methanol tanks, perhaps? The early traffic in outbound liquid adhesive was in demountable tanks (to somewhere near Inverness, I believe); I don't think bulk traffic in tanks started until the mid/late 1970s, with flows to Hexham and Barnstaple, amongst others. It's 1948, in LNER apple green fully lined out but without LNER on the tender. It was some months after nationalisation that engines began to appear with "BRITISH RAILWAYS" on the tender. The crest came later. I believe that for a time after nationalisation engines were outshopped after overhaul in LNER (or whichever company) livery, without insignia. David TG Hepburn took a photograph of an A3 entering Carlisle from the north in 1948 with absolutely no identification on it - no crest, no lettering, no number even. And some casual application of headcodes on the Lewes photos I suspect. The U1 code is correct - this would probably be one of the morning heavy duties which picked up a portion from Eastbourne at Eridge or from Tunbridge Wells West at Ashurst. Needed a powerful locomotive to keep to schedule (either a U1 or Light Pacific). The Fairburn is most likely a London train via East Grinstead and Oxted but is missing a third disc at left (Victoria) or right (London Bridge) end of the buffer beam. The L with the Birdcage set I think is a Tonbridge train via Eridge, with a redundant disc at the top of the smokebox. 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
