63952 @ cambridge; JVol6031 - interesting wagons behind the van. Anyone got an idea?

Great entertainment again David - thanks.

P

Well, in the more recent past, ferry chemical tankers ran to the works at Duxford south of Cambridge.

Whether that facility existed so far back, I couldn't say - but it has the appearance of being of WW2 origin.

The core product was, I think, synthetic glue, so a connection with wartime airframe construction is a possibility.

Just idle speculation .....

John Isherwood.

Araldite?

That's it - a resin-based adhesive, isn't it.

The plant was / is Ciba - Geigy, I think.

However, the briefest of Googling suggests that the history of C-G at Duxford only goes back to 1963.

Regards,

John Isherwood.

If I were brighter, I'd have done that first! This one clinches it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aero_Research_Limited

.... and the lesson that I draw is - don't rely on the briefest of Googling !!

So, if the factory has been at Duxford since 1934, then the tank wagons in the photo could well have originated there.

Trouble is, it doesn't get us any nearer to knowing more about what they looked like.

Regards,

John Isherwood.

JVol6009 has a J39 on a jolly big train - was that a normal assignment?

I think it might have been some sort of special working, but Dad's notes aren't clear.

David

Edit - having looked at his notes again I think it was a normal service train.

Perhaps a result of a loco failure?

Another good selection David. I particularly like the 94XX at Padd on ECS.

The 4F 4522 is travelling along the Down Goods past Mansfield Jn., though it might wll become an up mineral after London Rd Jn.

Regards,

Peter

2 previous attempts are still somewhere trapped in the wires, so here goes again.

I think Dad meant that the train was travelling towards London, hence up, even though incorrect at this location.

The wagons from Jvol6031 - I cannot get quote to work.

Anyway, I've enlarged the tanks from the original large scan.

At that time, I suspect they'd have been bring bulk raw materials in, rather than taking stuff out. Methanol tanks, perhaps? The early traffic in outbound liquid adhesive was in demountable tanks (to somewhere near Inverness, I believe); I don't think bulk traffic in tanks started until the mid/late 1970s, with flows to Hexham and Barnstaple, amongst others.

Is it me, or has that A3 at Trumpington got no coat of arms on the tender?

It's 1948, in LNER apple green fully lined out but without LNER on the tender.  It was some months after nationalisation that engines began to appear with "BRITISH RAILWAYS" on the tender.  The crest came later.

I believe that for a time after nationalisation engines were outshopped after overhaul in LNER (or whichever company) livery, without insignia.

The above post won't edit at the moment, so I can't remove the duplicate images or make a couple of minor corrections, I'll try later.

One missing image should be below.

TG Hepburn took a photograph of an A3 entering Carlisle from the north in 1948 with absolutely no identification on it - no crest, no lettering, no number even. The only identifier on it was the nameplate (and being several thousand miles from my books, I can't remember what that was).

Fascinating photo of the Leader bogie - has Kevin Robertson seen it I wonder?

And some casual application of headcodes on the Lewes photos I suspect.  The U1 code is correct - this would probably be one of the morning heavy duties which picked up a portion from Eastbourne at Eridge or from Tunbridge Wells West at Ashurst.  Needed a powerful locomotive to keep to schedule (either a U1 or Light Pacific).

The Fairburn is most likely a London train via East Grinstead and Oxted but is missing a third disc at left (Victoria) or right (London Bridge) end of the buffer beam.

The L with the Birdcage set I think is a Tonbridge train via Eridge, with a redundant disc at the top of the smokebox.

May I ask where the shot at Edwalton was taken?
