We're even going bigger on that in terms of layout presentation ready for DEMU Showcase As it's a club layout it's always been the intention for the layout timescales to be fairly generic just "Modern London" to cater for our wide variety of stock and interests but with a few irresistible nods to signature 2000s London elements! Loftus Road & Deadman's Lane both in one place... Looks like a trip to Burton is required again this year. Look forward to seeing both for the 1st time, must say the photos look superb. (Photo courtesy of WMRC gangmember Mark Butcher!) Highlight of the day for me was seeing this dream bargain below, a battered old unboxed 1990s Hornby Class 92 for a whopping £60! Tempting to start gathering together the old broken '92' spares and try selling them on for fortune..! The scary truth is that when I'd first planned to do the Boris Bikes, they were still sponsored by Barclays, so it made sense to stick with my vision of the baby blue colour scheme rather than go for the new Santander red! We're still discussing cameo scene ideas that may take years to come to fruition, and I know from my personal rolling stock perspective that there's normally a 3-4 year gestation period between me buying a loco/wagon and actually starting work on rebuilding it!! WMRC gangmembers Pete Hollman's been tinkering with the electrics, Mark Butcher's been revamping the layout presentation, and I've been messing around with little scenic details! Here's some of the latest bits I've been up to lately... Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr A good while ago Pete suggested modelling one of the car parking wardens lifting an expensive car - a cracking idea and also a scene I recall seeing on the old BBC show Clampers where a rich chap didn't ever bother paying for parking, nor care about paying the resulting fines, until they turned up to lift his supercar! With the modelling gauntlet laid down, I went straight onto eBay and bought a Wiking grabber lorry and an Oxford Diecast Aston Martin Vanquish...only a mere £200k of car there..! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr I set about modifying the grabber lorry, building a new lifting arm mechanism, and - crucially - wanted the car to 'float' in mid-air, requiring lots of metal bracing to be added to the lifting arm to carry the weight of the car, even when Loftus Road is packed up (potentially upside-down) for transport to exhibitions. Working from prototype photographs, I also added appropriate council branding, numberplates, lifting straps and a nice little bit of weathering. The 'Aston' had its fancy LED headlights painted up more realistically, wing mirrors scratchbuilt from Blu-Tack, numberplates from an actual example and of course a yellow parking ticket slapped on the windscreen! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr This was then mounted into the residential road, scene, with the flurry of activity disrupting an otherwise peaceful morning in West London! At a recent show, it was pointed out that our platform was somewhat lacking detail - and having a deficiency picked out in our modelling was like a red rag to a bull - in my biggest modelling fingers-up yet, I have been beavering away, with the result that we now have a very accurate model of a London Underground platform! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr I have added a full set of custom Loftus Road underground signs, with correct 'Way Out' lettering, painstakingly scratchbuilt 2 different designs of platform CCTV from brass strip, created driver-only operation platform mirrors, custom District Line route maps, speed limit signage and the funny box with TV screens at the very end of the platform. Signage was all made in CorelDraw and printed onto photo paper and varnished. Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr I very much look forward to taking on the next armchair critic with another decent dollop of scratchbuilding haha!! Meanwhile, moving back round to the residential street end of the layout, I've been finishing off a few of the street scenes, with some suitably Chelsea tractors..! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Somewhat ironically parked within the Low Emission Zone! The taxi below is a Hornby Oxford version, picked up from Kernow Model Rail Centre for a bargain £2.50, I've added a driver and smart-suited passengers, changed the numberplates and given it a quick matt varnish to tone it right down! More Chelsea tractors can be glimpsed in the background... Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Uxbridge Road has seen some detailing, the beautiful new Bachmann street people have been appearing on many a layout but I couldn't resist adding the busking musician! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr New also are the two girls choosing their #selfie filters prior to boshing a highly cheeky Nandos! It's barely run since then, so I thought it fitting to freshen up the livery with new Modelmaster transfers for a debut on Loftus Road at DEMU Showcase, 12 years on! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr And finally, saving the best to last, Mark Butcher has taken on the bold manoeuvre of extending our classic Silverlink stripes onto the new expanded Loftus Road - now a seamless 20' of dashing purple and lime green! This time next week, we'll be knackered from the first day at Showcase, and probably downing a very decent curry - bring it on!
