Phil, please keep an eye out for any "socialist workers" in the crowd. In my experience their presence usually leads to trouble. Keep away from them, follow stewards directions and stick near the family elements in the crowd, you should be OK. Us rozzers don't go out looking for trouble - it usually comes looking for us.

It's usually easy to spot them as they will

A) be trying to sell you a hard left newspaper

B) carrying placards with identically printed slogans

C) be covered in badges from prior demos

Er, 'scuse me, but Plimuff are currently 3rd in the League. 3rd from top.

We wos top for a few weeks. That spelled doom right away. (Yup Plymouth Argyle, spelled doom!) They've mostly been rubbish ever since Neil Warnock was 'shafted' by the Board and left. How they stayed in the FL a couple of seasons ago still amazes me, but I did see them win at Chesterfield at the end of that season to achieve that (well the bloke on loan from Bristol City achieved that mostly on his own).

They should at least not go out this season with 40 points already......................that's cursed them.

Don't confuse a good rant with irrelevant facts...

Slight error there Stu - I think the term you were looking for was 'relevant facts' ;) :jester:

PS I'm allowed to say these thing about Argyle as I have full permission to do so from a 'local' (Mrs Stationmaster) some of whose antecedents gradually migrated eastwards out of the most western extent of Cornwall.

I'm allowed to be rude about them too because I used to waste many of my Saturdays in the 60s freezing to death (even in September) and wasting my 1/6d watching them stumble around. However at least most of the time they actually tried hard and didn't flounce about like the Exeter City ruffians.

Stubby may be interested that my maternal Grandad played Rugby for Cornwall and my late mum told me that he had once played for the Barbarians against the All Blacks (pre 2nd war I believe). The caps and stuff were in a cabinet in our cellar when I was a nipper but were thrown away (can't believe that) when he died in 1961/2ish.

Some time back I tried to find out about his exploits but couldn't find anything at all. That side of my family history is almost a blank page and I have almost no info on my Cornish ancestors.

How we doing page wise now?

Before I post some nice photos and as we're talking football, can I record the passing of my clubs greatest manager.Jimmy Hill.Like him or loathe him he took us to the promised land in the 60s and was quite a pioneer in his time.Football owes him a great deal.

Hi

Have you tried looking in newspaper archives? The times has an awful lot of its archive on line and I'd have thought may well carry match reports on the Barbarians games, particularly against a touring side such as the all blacks.

PS - my father never quite got over his mother chucking his trainspotting books...

A quick search on the times archive has found an article from 14th September 1935 giving a preview of the first game of the 35/36 All Blacks tour. Their previous tour was in 1925. I'm guessing by the way you wrote your post that you're looking for closer to WW2 than the prior tour?

The article gives the Devon and Cornwall team. If of interest, I'll try and print the article for you. It's a scan so not 100% clear on screen. The team was

Knapman

Matthews

Ford

Jennings

Hurdern

Jones

Bone

Ashford

Gregory

Brig stoke

Scott

Rogers

Speare

No Harvey on that list so maybe he didn't play then. There are only 13 names though.

Thanks matey.

Very interesting.

As a token Cornishman, (having lived here longer than I lived in Wales), the history (including sporting) of both Principality and Duchy is fascinating.

My thoughts today turn to football, in the hope that having got the manager sacked, my team can now show what they are capable of by pounding Sunderland.
