The picture of 078 at Toton has recorded a bit of strange history.

If you look close it will be seen there is no coupling on the regulating air pipe just a hose from one cock to the other. What can't be seen is there was also a jubilee clip round the coupling to stop it being undone.

The reason was this loco and several others were in pairs dedicated to Thornabys steel traffic.

The theory was that when they were outstabled, such as a Toton on a weekend it would make it harder and require a fitter to split and use individual locomotives for local ballast work.

Serious consideration was given at the time to semi permanently coupling the loco's with Freightliner bar couplings. The shown modifications continued with the 37/5s until the 60s came along

Not a tractor, but 7628 on the NYMR goes to Whitby every now and then and I think it has a boiler.

EDIT - yes it does, just found a shot of it steaming away at Levisham.

I'd like to see this photo, as D7628 is certainly no heat. Was built without a boiler, tell tail sign is only one tank (fuel) between the bogies. The only 25s with boilers were of original body type with nose end doors (Small centre cab window) and D5233-D5288 of the 2nd bodyshell type (3 large cab front windows).

You'll probably find there was a steam boiler van in the consist.

The following are mainline registered and have boilers:

D1015

37025

40145

55002

55009

55022

Whether the boilers work is another matter.

It's worth noting that 37025 has an operational steam heat boiler. Have any other loco's ran on the mainline with one since steam heat finished in the mid 80's?

Plenty of locos with operational steam heat boilers on the main line.

There's a steam heat pipe visible on the back of the coal carrying thingy........

Also Heading for the Coast was the Welsh Thunderer railtour ( the full complicated story is on six bells junction)

post-1161-0-83508000-1463151816.jpg

The railtour locos worked the return Porthmadog to Euston train to Shrewsbury where the 25 was dumped (with a fuel leak) and 37426/428 worked the Welsh Thunderer back from Pwllheli to Shrewsbury

Complicated eh?
