RP82
On 14/12/2020 at 13:32, 4630 said: It's almost exactly six years since the contract for the Lindsey Oil Refinery - Preston Docks bitumen tank workings moved from DB Cargo to Colas Rail Freight. Colas operated the service initially using its class 60s, until they were sold on, but for the last few years double-headed class 56s or a solo class 70 have been the booked traction. Only on a very few occasions in the early days did Colas use one of their class 66s. So it was a bit of a surprise when a DB Cargo 66 turned up on 14th December 2020. Here is 66027 passing through Brighouse with 6E32, 10.05 Colas Ribble Rail to Lindsey Oil Refinery. I'm assuming todays working was a 'hire-in' due to non-availability of the usual Colas traction and/or crew. It's not the first time that a DB Cargo locomotive has been substituted, but probably less than a handful of times over the past 6 years. According to local sources the shed was hired in due to the Colas locos been delayed by overrunning engineering work in the Darlington area.

Jack374
A new livery was viewed in daylight today on 66150...nothing extravagant but the purpose of it is something to shout about... I headed to Barrow on Trent today in the rain to see DB's 66150, now sporting a 'We are the future' slogan. The reason for this is evident on a sticker on the fuel tank - HVO - meaning Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil. The fuel can be used with diesel as a mixture or purely on its own, without any modification to the engine or fuel system. Clearly tests with a class 67 on the load bank at Toton were deemed successful - is this the future? The loco topped the 6X01 Scunthorpe Trent TC to Eastleigh East Yard working, conveying a full compliment of new continuous welded rail (CWR). Unusually, this working was today DBC-operated, and also unusually, 66085 was tagging on the rear. Before anyone asks, no; I didn't smell anything akin to a chippy or fried vegetables from the exhaust!! And for good measure, 66761 went the other way just before with 6X44 conveying a rake of lengthy IFA tilting point carriers from Bescot to Toton: Thanks, Jack. 13
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted December 17, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2020 The regular light engine movements by Freightliner between their Leeds Midland Road depot and Crewe Basford Hall are usually routed via the Huddersfield line. It's unusual for them to be routed via the Calder Valley, but I knew the depot still had a couple of unusual visitors and the reporting code was a bit of a hint. On 17th December 2020 Freightliner 66590 rumbles along with 90049 and 86632 in tow approaching Brighouse with 0M86, 13.14 Leeds Balm Road to Crewe Basford Hall.
Railfreight1998
Next off the boat from the shed above, 66591 heads towards Craiginches FHH from Millerhill on a route refresher, presumably for future engineering works. This is the first Freightliner working to Craiginches for quite some time, so worth recording. Feathers/Fetteresso - 15/12/20
RMweb Premium Steadfast Posted December 18, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 18, 2020 (edited) After its trip to Eastleigh as photographed by @Jack374, the red pair migrated to Westbury last night and are due to work a rail train at the weekend. Indeed I think it's they set they took to Eastleigh! DB Cargo have recently been trialling vegetable oil as a future replacement for diesel. 66150 is the chosen 66 and as well as HVO on the fuel tank, has it has "We are the future" on the body side. Seen here stabled atop 14 Falcons of ballast in Westbury Down Yard, waiting it's next duty after coming light from Eastleigh last night. A bit more about info on the new fuel source here https://uk.dbcargo.com/rail-uk-en/metaNavi/news/DB-Cargo-UK-and-Network-Rail-conduct-landmark-track-testing-of-HVO-fuel-5803692 It's not a new repaint in red, but the white handrails, yellow handles etc have all been touched up for a close to ex works finish. RMweb Premium Steadfast Posted December 23, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 23, 2020 A scene that's changed a bit in the intervening 10 years! Christmas Eve - Eve, 2010 sees a pair of 66s on the front of 6B33 Theale - Robeston at Callow Hill in the snow. Since 2010, the wires have gone up, the hill (and stink) behind has grown as the landfill site has taken hold, Wootton Bassett has continued to expand and DB have overhauled a number of class 60s which have returned to these heavy trains where they belong in place of the gas guzzling pair of GMs. Oh yeah, and today has been wet and blowy, no snow in sight :-( Picture is on my Flickr, click it if you want to see it big! RMweb Premium Steadfast Posted December 30, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 30, 2020 One from today. Biffa livery 66783 'The Flying Dustman' sits stabled in Westbury Down Yard. With no traffic in either direction, the Eastleigh tripper was cancelled. I think it would've looked better with white cabsides, so it was red and white in the standard GB blue and orange style. The route via Warrington BQ/Wigan NW/ Blackburn/Calder Valley has been used by Freightliner a couple of times recently Peter when an AC electric has been included. I haven't checked the Sectional Appendix, but I'm presuming that it's due to a clearance issue somewhere on the more direct route via Stockport/Denton Jct/Standedge Tunnel/Huddersfield*, which remains the usual route for the regular diesel only light engine movements. I was anticipating one class 90 so was somewhat surprised with three and all in different liveries! On the assumption that further movements, including the return trips for these, are also in daylight there are several other interesting places along the route to try for a photo or two. Copy Pit or Hall Royd Junction for instance. * I'm guessing at this stage, but as there's been at least one DRS class 88 through the Standedge Tunnel and Huddersfield, the clearance issue might be between Stockport and Guide Bridge. Later update after checking the Sectional Appendix ========================================== The SA confirms that ‘hauled’ class 90s are prohibited between Denton Junction and Guide Bridge.
