Two 66s on looong oil trains through Rotherham today within 20 mins of each other. During the week, these services usually go via Nottingham/Newark, but Sunday workings are often seen via this route.

When I used to live in Lincs. they caused considerable traffic jams before the curve at Pelham was eased, load 30 slowly traversing the level crossings. I remember when the new tanks arrived with labels denoting a 77 thousand odd litre capacity thinking the retail value of the load was high, but what is it now? Somewhere north of £4.5m.....

On 27th June 2022, GBRf 66778 'Cambois Depot 25 Years' with 66754 'Northampton Saints' (which unfortunately appears to have had some graffiti added to the bodyside) and 66778 pass through Deighton working light engines as 0Z48 from Crewe Basford Hall to Doncaster Down Decoy.

Today 66796 worked the first aviation fuel train from Grain Oil Terminal to Sinfin Sidings (Derby), supplying the Rolls-Royce jet engine test beds. I believe GBRf have taken the contract from Colas, who have supplied fuel from Grangemouth since circa-2011.

Presumably a change in supplier for Rolls Royce from Ineos to BP?

Wasn't Grangemouth a BP refinery before Ineos? IIRC, Gmouth used to (probably still does)  supply most of Scots fuel, regardless of the brand of the fililng station?

No idea, just a thought that it looks like a commodity supplier change rather than just haulier, given the change in origin and wagons too

After delivering another 20 wagons worth of Whatley's finest to London, DB Cargo's blue 66051 'Maritime Intermodal Four' sits on the Down Reception at Westbury, journey's end for 6Z21 from Cricklewood. The loco would come off here, with a Freightliner 66 on for the trip to Whatley as 6C40. Freightliner's MWA set in use on this working again today. 66763 is stabled in the yard between trips to and from Eastleigh.

With its destination visible behind it, 66059 rounds the curve at the top of the valley with 4V01 Hope (Earles Sidings) - Cwmbargoed. This train will take 18 HTAs of coal away for use in the cement making process.

One of DB's Lickey Banker modified locos, 66059 pushes its set of 18 wagons (ex 4V01 from Hope) back from the Cwmbargoed run round loop up to the loading pad at Cwmbargoed Disposal Point. It's a long walk for the shunter preceding the move!

Sitting on the loading pad at Cwmbargoed Disposal Point, 66059 has just drawn the set forward a few wagons to allow next few to be loaded. The train arrived as 4V01 from Hope, and is formed of three sets of six HTAs, each set of six having buffer fitted outers  at each end to enable haulage by the cement works loco, a class 20 I believe.

As 66059 waits with its train being loaded for Hope Cement Works, another dumper truck is heading back from Cwmbargoed Disposal Point to Ffos y Fran colliery. The plant dumped to the left appear to be in some sort of vehicle graveyard, all missing parts or having seen better days. These views are easily achieved from Fochriw Road, running along the north side of the Disposal Point site.

Under threatening clouds, 70814 waits for the signal to depart with 6C40 Westbury - Okehampton and 66001 waits for the shunting to begin after Charlie 40 goes. Less than half an hour later and the heaven's opened.

On a warm summer evening,  66150 with its 'We are the future' branding sits in Westbury Up Yard with 6W55 for Long Dyke Junction. 66207 was tail gunner.

GB Railfreight's Construction sector triple grey livery 66793 passes Winterbourne with 455809 and 455816 in tow, heading for Sims scrap yard in Newport with 5Q55 from Stewarts Lane.

Grangemouth was BP until Jim Ratcliffe bought it, IIRC after BP threatened to shut the place.

Is the switch to Grain just because it is nearer, hence cheaper/more cost effective?

Class 66s seem to be a regular sight on the Fort William Sleepers, piloting the more expected class 73. According to RTT 66740 looks to be the usual traction for this service over the last couple of weeks, today accompanied by 73969.

 

Here they both are earlier in the day having shunted the sleeper stock into the stabling siding. Both pictures taken 14th July.

66035 'Resourceful' is heading back to the location of its naming 4 years ago as it passes Hullavington working 6C03 Northolt - Severnside. Going by the soot stained bodywork, this is one of the smokier 66s out there.

Not my cup of tea, but a topical subject and not often you get a loco this fresh! Stabled in Westbury Down Yard, 66734 in platinum jubilee livery arrived last night as 0V30 from Eastleigh,  before going forward to Cardiff Tidal today as 0Z34. I'm not keen on the colours, but I like the fact it's got the standard livery colour breaks. I think more customer and commemorative liveries could do with being applied standard in corporate styles but alternative colours. The Drax 60 and ONE 66 do this well. Any operators want a livery designing, get in touch... ;-)

Taken whilst perching under the footbridge, 66105 passes Undy working 6M41 Margam - Round Oak, shortly after leaving Llanwern. It was touch and go with the 2+4 HST set going the other way!

Running in multi, former EWS machine 66053 leads 66152, the first 66 to gain DB Schenker red, towards Westerleigh Junction working 6Z86 Little Kimble - Tytherington. This usually runs as 4Z86, but some wagons that were still loaded which limited the train to a class 6.

As we approach the longest day of the year, there's still a fair amount of light at quarter to ten. With a pause in the shunting to allow 0V14 Eastleigh - Margam into the yard, there's time for a quick snap of 66025 and 66011, both still in full EWS livery. No pause in the rain though! The pair are seen sat after knocking out a few cripples and placing them in Westbury's cripple siding, the wagons visible at the rear at this point. The good order wagons, along with the two other rafts of blue boxes in shot were formed up to be tomorrow's 6A53 for Appleford via Didcot Yard, having been loaded at Tytherington yesterday.

GBRf's 66751 sits in Westbury Down Yard with tomorrow's 6O41 for Eastleigh, formed of the 'primaries' from RDT 01 for turning. The primaries are the Chute wagon and Manipulator wagon from a Rail Delivery Train, and these parts of it are directionally sensitive. Judging by the fresh paint and new stickers, this pair had come of maintenance, and turning would be the last step before reuniting them with the rest of the set. Colas 66847 sits alongside, outside the Elephant House while waiting maintenance.

Ex DRS, Freightliner Powerhaul livery 66416 sits waiting for relief with 6C65 Lawley Street - Whatley, empties from another load of stone for HS2. Of note are the trio of brand new blue (build date 2022, 81 70 5932 480-3, 469-6 and 468-8) VTG JNAs, which really stand out. Weirdly this is a 'Charlie' headcode, coming off the Midland you'd expect it to be a 'Victor'. There have been a few odd headcodes lately.

 

I've got a fair batch to upload soon, plenty around the East Midlands, a new area for me to explore.
