Class 66 photos

Recommended Posts

I saw four Freightliner Class 66 hauled freight trains going past my house yesterday. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get any photos but I know what they hauled. They all came at random times during the day. If I see anything today, I'll take some photos and post some on here.

2 hauled auto ballasting wagons (one in each direction, the second one was top and tailed)

2 hauled flat wagons of sleepers (the same)

66506 leads 59204 as they rumble through Westbury with stone from Merehead to Hanwell Bridge. Timed at 45mph max speed for 4,800 tonnes.
PS At Hanwell the train splits, with the 59 heading for Crawley, with the front portion of the train, and the 66 to Bow with the rear part..

We don't seem to have heard from "Beast 66606" for some time. I imagine that this is a favourite loco of his...

I’ve seen a post that he’s made recently on another forum, so I guess he’s just taking a break from RMweb for a bit.  Hopefully not for too long as I always found his posts and photos interesting.

ah good question. If anyone knows different then I am happy to stand corrected. But I think that it is in fact not an ex UK loco. It definitely isn't 'our' UK 66001. The European register running number is 266001 -1, so the 2 in front of the 66 differentiates it from a UK 66, then the -1 at the back is a number generated for that specific loco at the time of registration. It is a lot more complex than that but I have forgotten the exact details of it. There will definitely be someone on here that can explain it better than me....probably everybody actually

So it looks to me like the first non EWS 66 when they took them to Europe, this one being owned by Porterbrook on build.

The first Euro 66 was the first of the HGK ones which was diverted off the EWS production, DE61 and DE62. DE62 even still has the UK light clusters and orange cantrail stripe.

HGK DE62 266 062-9 Kohlezug, Köln-West

The European number can't be used to tell which was first as they're numbered in different series, registered in various different countries. Best bet  as @Mark Saundersmentions is to use the build number.

This is a good example. Same original owner as 266001 (ex Porterbrook PB07) further up thread, delivered a couple of months earlier as PB02.

P1010681 - kopie

Currently number both DE676 and 92 80 1266 004-1, but built as PB02.

At least the numbering on UK ones is easier to follow as they are all in one series and all begin with 66...

I've had a look in the 'Route 66, The Class 66 Story' and confirm DE61 and DE62 were the first 66s in Europe. Intended to be 66154 and 66155, they were shipped at the same time as the EWS locos either side of these numbers, with the replacement 154 and 155 following later. They were unloaded at Rotterdam in late September 1999. DE61 became 9902, DE62 becoming 9901.

These locos are unusual as they were delivered the same year they were ordered (build number starts 99) whereas the EWS machines all start 96 (ordered 1996) but delivered 1998 - 2000.

In case anyone thinks that I'm on the wrong side of the railway boundary, the photos were taken from the footpath that leads from the York/Hull platform (which is not the platform in the third photo) to the adjacent car park.  This Google Maps image shows the position;  Micklefield railway station
