Wow, yes, even just zooming in on some of the closer photos on the page linked above - different window hoppers, underframe layout, bogie-area clutter, probably doors too...   Don't you love a standardised fleet?   😉

It was done on purpose, dual sourcing I think it was called and it proved it's worth on several occasions, as in the early days serious faults were sometimes discovered which meant only half the fleet needed to be grounded rather than the whole lot!

Although the two builds may have looked the same with a superficial glance, there was hardly a single thing that was the same on either of them.

Interesting..... Your subsequent description reminded me of the issues the Apollo 13 crew had with resolving problems with different components in the command and lunar module.

I wonder why such fundamental items you mentioned weren't specified as standard across manufacturers to minimise future maintenance and spares? Or even bought for the entire fleet and free-issued to the manufacturer for the build.

Following comments noted though. . . . .

The translators are interesting too, the leading one having two sets of double doors fitted, one each end....

Can’t recall seeing this one before. VSOE Pullmans with a car flat on the back. And if that wasn’t unusual enough, there’s an inflatable boat on the car flat too. Original image by Colin Brooks on Flickr.

Seaside excursion? Off to Blackpool, stop off at Crewe to collect the freezer van full of cornettos and a GUV full of inflatable unicorns :)

Looks like an RNLI D Class inshore boat.

The train is heading to Cromer according to the caption, yet RNLI's station history suggests their D Class boat was upgraded in 1984 - a year before the image was taken.

That is surely a weird thing to see anywhere other than on a preserved line in recent times.

Very nice, thanks for the links!

Those trains, while destined for the UK eventually, hadn't yet reached our shores and were presumably designed to be delivered by rail across Europe. Hence the simpler coupling arrangements etc.

Whereas the Networkers and Mk1 barriers were built in the UK and sent via Switzerland for the tests, and pre-tunnel they had to go on the ferry.

Looks like a leaking piston gland has coated the leading driver in white emulsion. If you weathered a model like that, no-one would believe it.

No, no, that's a Rugby Special, taking the Scottish supporters down to Twickenham. That's the supply of Tennent's Lager for the trip.

It was for an Orient Express from Victoria, due to go through the Chunnel, but they were worried by the reports of leaks in the tunnel.
