Out of interest and no doubt displaying my ignorance, what exactly are the limitations of a hand drawn kit such as this? If you think about drawing two parallel lines draw them to scale,if you get a variation of 0.5mm it's quite a lot. So say you draw it ten times scale the same inaccuracy of 0.5mm amounts to less, but still when all added together you end up with parts that aren't quite right. So there is nearly all ways adjustments to make. But saying that a well hand drawn kit is still loads better than a badly designed CAD drawn one Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Worth remembering next time I get frustrated of the inaccuracies of an old kit - it wasn't necessarly poorly designed as such (the skills of the builder matters a good deal too of course!). N15class Posted August 2, 2017 Author Share Posted August 2, 2017 The horse box has started its journey through the paint shop. The pictures show the underframe in matt black. The body in green and black. The roof has been done since but was too wet to take another picture. I am pleased with the way it has turned out. Just need to find some suitable transfers now. then it can all be put back together. I might even get some work done on the 0395 as I am sort of between locos. Not quite right but it's the best I can do for now. Well what did we use. The SR is from HMRS BR carriage and loco sheet, the dots art from a GWR wagon sheet, and finally the numbers are from SR loco and carriage sheet. I will tone them down with the weathering. All that needs to be done now is the groom's compartment, varnishing and glazing. For an old basic kit I really pleased the way it went together and with a little added detail it looks the part to me. N15class Posted August 27, 2017 Author Share Posted August 27, 2017 Well I can´t believe it´s almost 2 years to the day that I posted anything about the 0395. Mind you I did say it was a long term project. So what has been done. To start with the injectors have been modified slightly and fitted to the frames. I was thinking these were the last bits require on them. But looking at the drawing in Bradshaws I got the brake pulls wrong so they need sorting. I have also fitted the whistle and steam feeds to the injectors atop of the firebox. The casting just needed one whistle removing. I also added the feed to and the clack valves to the boiler there is a centre bracket on the middle splasher, this made it slightly more tricky as the boiler and footplate separate. in the end I decided to make the clacks and pipe removable, till painted anyway. maybe more sooner rather than later. 7 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

It feels like I am getting somewhere with it now. There's not to much detailing on the loco. The annoying thing is I forgot to replace the backhead that was borrowed by the G6. I have no pictures of it I can't find any pictures of it. So why? Quick look at my photos and I think it will be 0441 which has no number plate and is from the same batch so the builders plate is at least right. N15class Posted September 9, 2017 Author Share Posted September 9, 2017 Well a little more progress. Chimney and dome are now fixed two very nice castings from Laurie. I have also fitted the blower valve and control rod. This is mounted on home made split pins, which hold the 0.45 wire in place. The hand rail has also been done which to me has turned out a treat. I thought it was going to be more of a pain than it was. I dislike continuous rails with double front supports. But it was easier to bend where it turns to go back along the boiler as it only has one curve not the usual two. As I could not split it on a central front knob, the join to the straight boiler rail is on either side of the smoke box. This also allows for the boiler and smoke box to be separated. I am now in the process of cutting out the steps and the lamp irons etc ready for fitting. I also need to make a new drag beam as I messed it up. It should have the same outline as the tenders but does not. Must of been in a different world when I cut it. 6 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
N15class Posted September 22, 2017 Author Share Posted September 22, 2017 Getting closer to the finishing line. It has been a bit slow as I needed to fabricate the steps and lamp irons. But once made they did not take long to add. The loco now has it´s face. The lamp irons are a bit of a pain as there 3 different shapes to cut out to make 4 different irons. The steps were fairly straight forward. I just wish had of made the cab steps along with the tender ones as they need to match. I will look at these things on the next build as it will save a lot of time. Well we are almost there. The reverser is screw fitted as I need to make sure the back head will fit once I get it. I now just need to add the buffers to the loco and tender and the vacuum pipe to the loco. Then the only bits to do are the modes to the break gear and the backhead. Might be ready to paint after Christmas. although I am hoping to prime before then. It also looks like a jolly good clean up is required. 4 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Thanks. This loco was a bit of a cheat. The cab entrance handrails are from the Laurie Griffin range. I had already fitted a pair to the tender so bought more for the loco so they would match. The item about the handrail knobs, mentioned 4mm as it is the way I did them as I found machined ones to over scale. I think it came Guy Williams. Whilst giving the body a good scrub, not only did I knock off a smoke box lamp iron and lose it I also noticed I had not even attempted to add the front sandbox filler caps. N15class Posted October 7, 2017 Author Share Posted October 7, 2017 (edited) Right Have refixed the lamp iron, added the sand box fillers, and altered the brake gear on the loco. Finally made the counter balance weights for the valve gear. It then required stripping down and giving a jolly good clean. I must admit I had forgotten how many bits I built this one in. It also started its trip through the paint shop. Bit of a photo fest this post but hey it saves me rabbiting on too long. Well thats it for now.
